Inigo Montoya Series: Proverbs 22:6 - Raise Up A Child In The Way He Should Go?

Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” The way in which this is typically taught is that if you raise your child to know and fear God, he will stay on the straight and narrow for the rest of his life. Dan Phillips, however, explains that that is not the meaning of this verse - at all.
**At 13:25 the chapter and verse reference is incorrect. It should be Proverbs 19:27. My sincere apologies.

I've been waiting for another one of these! They're not just interesting, they provide neccessary lessons. I needed this right now! I have three children I raised as Christians, including Christian schools for part of the time. I've been blaming myself for my son who's just not sure what to believe (although he says he'd like to believe as I do), my daughter, who believes in God, but she's confused about The Bible, and a drug-addicted youngest who is an atheist. I pray for them. Thank you, Brother Justin. May God bless.

Proverbs are generally true statements. Wisdom. This is typically how this goes. As a mother of an adult child who has left God's path and needs to repent. I think of Hagar. This is the passage that gives me comfort. Not that I have a guarantee, but I see here that God hears and turns towards the mother when she cries out for her child. So my job is to make that cry. I lift up my son to the throne and continuously pray for repentance.

I watched this whole series to date at one sitting. Using verses out of context to prove ones view, even if that view is supported elsewhere in the Scripture, gives people reason to question if other statements pastors make are correct. There are many common phrases we use in evangelical churches that are very misleading pulled words in Scripture. One you mentioned somewhere along the way was the term "soul winning" (taken from Proverbs 11:30). It insinuates that we had a part in bringing that person into Salvation. Other than sharing the the Gospel and answering the unbelievers questions to the best of my ability I can't get them saved. That is God's realm. I may be awarded in Heaven for my faithfulness but not because I have a certain number notches on my "Soul Winners New Testament" spine.

21 minutes in... We're doing a study on this in our church for the next few months. We tackled this verse and it was understood that it wasn't a promise, however we understood it to be a truth that if you train up a child according to God's way (the way he/the child should go) then it is something that will be instilled in them, though it doesn't mean it will result in salvation since salvation is wholly of God so there should not be any blame placed on the parent if the child is/becomes apostate. However! The explanation given here was/is excellent food for thought and is much more simple. It makes sense... though I think both truths can be gleaned here (letting scripture interpret scripture) which should come as a comfort and not a burden. Much love as always Justin! Thank you for being diligent in your study and sharing gems like these!

Dr. J. Vernon McGee put it this way. If you teach a child in the admonition of the Lord, when he is old, the teaching will not leave him. He can choose to ignore it, but it will never depart from him. (Paraphrased: I heard this some time ago.)

Dear brother Justin. Thank you for what you do. This video came in the right time. I have been studying the book of Timothy and I came across 2 Timothy 3:15 and I got reminded of this verse only. Now, to understand the real meaning of this verse, it's encouraging and sad at the same time. We do what God has asked us to do and leave the rest to God. Children are still depraved until they are met by the Lord. Thank you :)

Very interesting Bible study. Bajes a lot of sense. Ironically, huwever, it could lead to parental despair if they never corrected their children and think tgat their children are soomed to hell. Praise God that Proverbs is full of general principles and not promises. So good to know that God has saved adult children who were reared wrongly. So I encourage believing parents to never give up praying for rheir children's salvation, despite the parents' unfaithfulness to God in the way they reared their children.

Such a good episode! I am reading both books, and I have met Pastor Dan. I learned some background about TWTG today. Everything said here today is true. I love what he said at the end. "(...) It's hard to find a church that is really serious about studying and doing the word of GOD, and loves people. Churches often tend to be very strong on relationship or a very strong on doctrine , but not both. (...)" Truth right here! Each believer should take this to heed and be careful not to mess up what God blesses His church with!

Thank you Justin and Pastor Dan. This interpretation makes so much more sense and goes with so many of the other warning proverbs. This interpretation leads to parental humility in raising children, and reinforces our understanding of the doctrine of original sin and the innate depraved nature of humans. I always felt the more common interpretation subtly leads to thinking our children are just empty vessels waiting to be filled with what WE can pour into them. Also, another reason why I have become a full-throated fan of the LSB: Another verse that it translates correctly.

This was eye opening. Proverbs is much deeper than one may think, esp a new believer or someone who is just reading it for the 1st time. The fullest meaning of a verse is often missed if we skim thru it, and dont ponder on what it may have meant in context, for the audience it was written to. This one seems to be a good example to use with the KJVO crowd - his solid breakdown of the Hebrew and how the KJV translation (& others listed) cause misunderstanding.

Well I got that all wrong. Thank you so much. It was drilled in our heads when we was in the NAR. I'm glad I've been out for years now and have a right understanding of salvation and who really does the saving. If I was still in it I would be racked with guilt because I stood on this verse for my daughters all the years they were growing up and when I seen them go another path than Christianity, I would find myself saying, well when they grow old they will never depart. They will come back.

This was such an encouraging and informative teaching, and so perfectly timed for me to hear!! I was one of those parents who beat myself up with guilt because my kids are not believers - we went to church as a family, they went to Christian school. Then I thought it was ALL MY FAULT because my hubby is not a believer! I now know where all this condemnation comes from, and I’m still a praying mother of adult sons believing that God will lead ALL my menfolk to repentance . I heard a quote recently from Dr. James Dobson: “Proverbs are not promises, they are PROBABILITIES” (emphasis mine). Thank you for this message!!

This clearly points out how scripture must interpret scripture - interesting how the phrase - "the way he should go" is generally understood as being in an assertive sense that the parent must instruct the child in the way the child should go but that in the original Hebrew it really means "the way the child goes" - not the way "he should go" - and that if a parent is letting a child go his way he'll keep on in his own sinful way. However, even with the poor translation - it is still clear, especially when we look to other scripture - the parent is to disciple their children and train them up in the Lord regardless of a child's way or will - Ephesians 6:4 - and as parents we need to continually admonish our children and share the gospel with them and hold them accountable to the gospel - we then pray that God is merciful and regenerates their souls

I was very pleased and enlightened to the clarity of the Hebrew translated context given by Brother Phillips because it makes it so much clearer. I’ve got a suggestion: 2 Peter 3:8 (also its origin: Psalm 90:4). So many people use this to argue for old earth creation theories. They forget that God is outside of time, that Genesis 1 defines what a day is, and most importantly that these verses are poetry referring to God’s patience.

I have to say I'm suspicious of a position that says, "every translation ever is wrong," and that's pretty much what your guest is saying. Of the dozens of English versions on biblegateway, all but a few translate/interpret this verse in the traditional way. A notable exception is the CSB, which diverges from its predecessor (the HCSB) and renders it much closer to your guest (interestingly, the LSB also diverges from the NASB in the same way): "Start a youth out on his way. . ." But what's the meaning there? Surely it's no different from the traditional reading of this verse--a child or youth will ordinarily continue to live as he (or she) was brought up. The CSB's (or LSB's) reading covers both the right and the wrong path--the youth will ordinarily continue in whichever one he was set out on. So while this is broader than the traditional reading, it doesn't contradict that reading but rather affirms it. It's right to point out that this verse isn't an absolute guarantee--to treat it that way completely disregards the literary form of the entire book. It's also right, IMO, to point out that the verse--even under the traditional understanding--carries a warning. But I think it's unwarranted to deny the positive application of this verse. I'll admit that I have no background in Hebrew as Phillips obviously does, but I'm confident that the translation committees of the NET (which discusses this question of translation at some length in its notes), ESV, and NASB are at least his equal in this regard, and no less committed to rendering God's Word accurately in English.

Dan gave the literal rendering of the Hebrew. That is what the text says (which is why the LSB does indeed render it that way).
@danbrown586
@danbrown586 Жыл бұрын
@@JustinPetersMin He did, and no disagreement with him as far as that goes. Where I disagree with him is where he says that the traditional understanding of that verse--which appears in almost every Engilsh translation, a fact he dismisses by suggesting that every last one of the translators involved in every one of those translations just got stuck in the rut of the KJV's rendering, ignoring that the reading appears in Coverdale's Bible, which predates the KJV by almost 100 years--is *wrong.* His claim is not that Proverbs 22:6 has a broader meaning, but that it means the *opposite* (his word) of the near-universal rendering. The verse doesn't simply mean, as he understands it, that a child/youth will continue to live his life as he was brought up--that would be consistent both with the traditional understanding as well as his "warning" view. But rather, he says it must only be understood as a warning that if you bring up your child in the wrong way--and a very particular wrong way at that--he will continue in that wrong way. Traditions can and do err, and all are to be measured against and corrected by scripture. But to hand-wave away the work of hundreds of Hebrew scholars over the last 500 or more years, well, doesn't seem to demonstrate the humility I'd expect from a minister.

Love Justin Peterson and what he’s doing. But disagree with this video. Frankly, I think it’s nonsense, respectfully. It’s just another anti-KJV video. God is the creator of all languages, he preserves his word according to Psalms 12:7. He knew beforehand all the languages his word would be available in. No where in the Bible does it say we need to know the Hebrew in order to understand Gods word. I disagree with the gentleman’s interpretation of the text, he’s not the foremost authority on Proverbs and there’s other “scholars” that will disagree with him. So who is right and who is wrong? Psalms 12:6, the words of Lord is tried. Thanks for the video Justin, I respect your ministry. Blessings.

This has nothing to do with being "anti-KJV." At all. I'm sure you noticed we talked about the NASB, HCSB and NIV as well. Dan is a Hebrew scholar. The text simply does not say what the KJV or any of these other translations say. I have read many articles on this commonly misinterpreted verse. Dan is 100% right.

Anti-KJV? The hebrew of the old testament is there for all to see and to translate. What you ranting about again?

@@JustinPetersMin Justin, respectfully, that’s your opinion. And your opinion is just that, an opinion. The video did mention other translations but then after that he based his explanation off of the KJV interpretation specifically. Dan is a mortal man just like you and me, for him to be 100% correct when there are other “scholars” who would disagree, is laughable. With all due respect. He is not the foremost authority, I don’t care if he knows Hebrew through and through. Knowing Hebrew is not a requirement to understand and/or interpret the word of God. If it was, then God himself would have said so. Again, I respect you and your ministry. We will have to agree to disagree.

@@WasLostButNowAmFound I came on here and offered my opinion on the video very respectfully. A rant? Seriously? Let’s be a bit more mature in our dialogue.

Well, if the Bible is written in Hebrew and Greek we should be honest to ourselves and admit that reading in Hebraic or Greek context will deepen the understanding of the intended meaning of the word. Bible is an inspired word of God written by humans and GOD did it on purpose. If I read an American 🇺🇸 history in Indian context then I’ll be dead wrong.😂 Ciao..!! Namaste 🙏
