Tick tock goes the Iodine clock! Well not quite. Explore this video to find out how we can measure the initial rate from reactions and how we can use clock reactions to do the same too. Find out how we can use this to find out the order of the reaction.

You need to explain that the thiosilphate is added to consume the iodine in the first reaction and when all the thiosulphate is used the iodine remains which then starch to a black colour. In your example the reaction will instantly go black.

This actually helped me to understand the graphical method a lot better, my text book isn't very concise. However, I'm still a bit hazy on the iodine clock reaction, do you put the starch in at the same time as when you are mixing the reactants? My textbook says that the initial rate is proportional to 1/t. I'm not quite sure I understand.

Yes you do. The Iodine turns black in the presence of starch. Yes the 1/t bit is just the units other rate. E.g. s-1.

Surely thiosulphate must be added to the clock reaction? It’s a two step reaction and the second step involves thiosulphate

Hiya! Thanks for this fab video! Can you draw a tangent to the graph at t=0 and then measure the gradient of the tangent? That method has come up in Edexcel papers before.

In our book they added sodium thiosulfate can i know why was it added ??

To convert the iodine back into iodide. If there was no thiosulfate, the solution would just turn black very quickly.
