I agree with pretty much everything you said, but when I use all of my burst, and everything isn't dead, I feel like telling the mobs "okay, timeout, just give me... like 30 seconds and I'll be able to hurt you again, okay?" It's also just so tempting to say "Summoner is RUINed" :P

I really needed this video, been working 12 hour days so barely have time to play much but the moment I got on and noticed that everything I knew and loved about summoner was gone and changed I was devastated. Really looking forward to lvl 70 now, hope I enjoy it as much as I have lvl 50 and lvl 60 summoner

I feel bad because I quit the game just as Stormblood was released pretty much, but I think it was time for a break. I didn't want to go into this expansion with an attitude that wasn't excited to play. These videos are a good way to keep me relatively interested in the game though, so thanks Larry! =) (I'm sure I'll get back into the game sometime later this year).

Thematically I feel like Summoner fits better as a burst mage verses the dot class it used to be. In previous FF Summoners were like... "Yo, I'm gonna summon this thing and totally wreck your face." so I feel like it fits. Also Larry, I'm liking the new glam. And, ofc, the dong is on point as always.

I love your humor and how it still shows on your more serious videos. I couldn't handle playing SMN. So I'll stick to RDM and SCH. One thing I do is x class Mana Shift. I'm glad I do because I shoot downed SMNs with more mana to help, or I give mana to tanks/heals. People love a little "Refresh" from time to time!

RDM has the least amount of mana refreshing tools of the casters so idunno how RDM is different from SMN in that respect.

Thanks, Larry! As a SMN main in the last part of HW, the new stuff confused me. I had about two weeks to actually get used to HW SMN, and I had no idea how to approach this since it seemed so different. Honestly, I think I'll be playing BLM or RDM until/unless SE makes some tweaks to make it less punishing on death and generally just brings it up to be better competition vs RDM, but I appreciate you showing how it is still perfectly effective when you play it as intended. :)

I play Summoner only lvl 56 and it already feels like I'm playing dance dance revolution. It's amazing, I play Scholar too and now I can see that Summoners legit have as much micromanagement as a healer.

I find that with Devotion now I can help offer support for the healers a lot easier when running in dungeons. I tend to main as SMN and even with all the changes I feel like the combat is more fluid than it was since ARR and HW, allowing great flexibility to cover the missing components in a party but also has a natural feel to the way combat flows. Even with all the changes and challenges it has I'm still proud to say that SMN is my main and has been since ARR. Love the vids as always Larry, keep on making Eorzea smile ♥

Good video and explanation of the overall changes with SMN. I also share your concerns regarding deaths. I am going to be very, very sad if I die and it's not my fault... and then I'll have to spend several minutes working my way back up (with reduced stats and no important cooldowns). That's really my only gripe... plus, taking away Sustain but making us have our pets near a specific person for Aetherpact/Devotion makes me sad. I wish they'd just let us 'choose' a target within range so I didn't have to plant my pet near people who could drop AoEs on it.

Hey Larry! I'm a summoner main who seconds on scholar, and to be honest, I was really unhappy with how they changed up the jobs with SB. That said, I've just passed Susano normal in the story, and I think I'm starting to love the job again, and this video has actually really helped me get a fresh perspective on the changes. I'm not at 70 yet, but I've noticed a pretty big difference already. At 60 it felt like you had to ham-hand your way to dreadwyrm trance, sometimes cut corners or take a dps hit in order to meet phases and keep those darn stacks going. Now that I don't lose Aethertrail stacks I'm plotting and strategizing more, which reminds me more of lvl 50 SMN (which I missed greatly).

Hi Larry, I'd like to add to this video a bit. You said that SMN is the only job that gets punished super hard by dying, but I don't necessarily agree. Dragoon has a problem similar to this if they die as well, because of stacks for Gaze of the first brood. granted, it's not as bad since Blood of the Dragon is on a 30s cd now, but they still get -heavily- punished for dying as well. (And in some cases, even long bouts of boss invulnerability. Yojimbo comes to mind.) Edit: As always though, loved the video. Keep going strong, man

Oh yes, definitely other classes get punished for death too, and DRG is up there. I meant Summoner loses the MOST from death, they lose 2 minutes of prep to Bahamut if they die and have to prep 2 minutes again.

Larryzaur Omg ahhh. I didn't expect a reply. I can definitely understand. One of my FC members mains SMN, and they've been struggling a bit to keep up. I haven't played SMN since 3.x, so I don't -fully- understand the changes, but it definitely seems to be a ton of micro management and making sure you stay as far away from death as possible. thanks for the insight though, and it's an honor to get to directly interact with you! Larryzaur Lucid Dreaming helps you after rez to get mp back up and do some dmg if aetherflow is on cd but yeah it does suck.

Arkaine Ascorbin you pretty much hit the nail on the head with my worries. I will say, though, if played right, Dragoon still has the highest burst damage of any DPS. That being said, Dragoon feels a bit weaker now and life of the dragon feels super underpowered for how long you have to spend building up to it. It feels a little more confusing to play now as opposed to 3.x, even with the loss of phlebotomize and power surge. I still love Dragoon, but I wish it did more damage for how confusing the opener can be. And yeah, dragon sight is definitely clunky.

DRG has that as well, and we lose 2min of prep if the boss is invulnerable for too long since our stacks are tied to a 30sec timer. If the boss invul is longer than that, 2min of prep time is out of the window and you have to start from step 1 all over again. I can normally only get the 4 necessary stacks once per boss fight and that is the only time AT ALL that I can use the enhanced gauge. There is no building it and holding it due to it being tied to the Blood of the Dragon timer.

To me that's a fair difference, you're still heavily paying to phases and fights, just not so much a timer this time around... :o Have you found any use for Tri-bind this expansion? I'm still leveling mines though content however it's still off the keybinds for me.

Kreyd Lerival I don't mind. I didn't like SMN's DoT management pre 4.0 because it was uneven and clunky. I prefer the new SMN much more.

I miss my old summoner for sure, I've had a blast in HW playing that job, timers weren't an issue after playing it for so long, you evolve an internal clock for dots lol. But have to say I like it now as well, summoner for life, I started as an arcanist in 2.5 and never dropped my SMN soulstone for a different one and don't plan to.

Totally agree with you. Been playing summoner since second beta phase. I held on hope through 2.0, then heavensward was a nice improvement but Stormblood has truly made the class awesome but I miss the heavensward aether flow.

I like how everyone is having these tactical, phase planning classes, making sure everything lines up, maximizing their offensive cooldowns.... And I'm over here pressing Fire 4 indefinitely. I'm glad I don't gotta deal with all this timing stuff. Yes, ifrit is definitely more usable than he was. The only thing to worry about is him dying more often than Garuda. I wish we still had sustain :(

Ifrit is definitely used a lot more than what it was earlier. Ifrit is preferred for AOE damage because of Radiant Shields 50 potency attack everytime damage is suffered. While the small melee bonus is nice for Warrior and PLD AOE. In a boss fight, Garuda is going to be preferred for contagion. The fact contagion no longer contributes to AOE is the reason ifrit is now very much relevant.

I absolutely LOVE the new Summoner, even before 70. Heavensward's changes made me drop the class because I hated how summoner dealt with adds during boss fights. Every other class felt like it could DPS adds down fast and I felt like I had to cast 3-4 different spells before I could do anything to it (cause Ruin III sure wasn't going to kill an add fast). I dropped SMN really quick once it hit 60 but when Stormblood came out, I gave my former favorite class a try, and loved it! Best rework they could've done! Now just give me my Shiva Egi (even if just glamour) and I'm set. :D

I see a lot of SMN striking dummy videos where they're spamming ruin 2 for no reason instead of ruin 1 when they're not even weaving, not using contagion before tri-disaster/deathflare/sumon bahamut/akhmorn, not waiting for aetherflow to line up with the timing of their deathflare and bahamut summon so that they can ruin 2 weave festers in for maximum number of wyrmwaves and even casting tri disaster AFTER deathflare (WHY?!). I'm glad to see someone else out there actually understands this class lol.

Greetings from Cactuar! I'm having quite a bit of difficulty with SMN simply due to how perfect you must play it. Aetherflow not falling off is your absolute BANE (no pun intended). Missing a fester is no longer just losing a DWT. Besides losing 1 bahamut stack, missing a fester = 1 wasted Aetherflow because 2/3 of your aetherflow is unavailable when the next Aetherflow is ready. Furthermore, the removal of Sustain means that any small amounts of damage to your pet adds up, and fun fact: you CANNOT summon demi-bahamut if your pet dies. Finally, if YOU die, there goes your entire rotation. If you die after you use aetherflow, and you have no lucid....welp GG. I'm still enjoying it, but damn! It is such a departure from old SMN, and I am just not smart or gud enuf to keep up, especially now that the job demands perfection. Raid is gonna be fun...

SpenzOT I feel your pain. Though a least an average played SMN still had decent dps. I played MCH back in the days where you had to play perfectly to get numbers comparable to a faceroll BRD. T_T

I dabbled in MCH and yeah that was pretty hard. Sadly SMN is in a worse spot now. You basically drop to the bottom of the list if you don't execute perfection. You mess up, you get to wait 120+ seconds before you can restart your rotation. You die, you get to wait 180+ seconds. It's pretty bad. I have played with average SMN's and the tank's do more damage than them. SMN is an all or nothing job now. If you aren't good, the only DPS you will be beating will be the healers.

When you say SMN is rekt when they're dead, it's pretty the much the same situation for me as a SCH, especially when you had popped aetherflow pre-death and, and youre in a tense situation where you can heal no one at all... But on another note LARRY! I'm trying to get back into SMN but I feel like there's a lot to learn now since the change - I haven't done much dpsing with that class (I'm in BLM mode most of the time) but I want to learn micro-managing as a SMN the way SCH has micro managing... Do you have any advice? Rotation guides? pointers? Thanks :)

You can take as a pool skill, Lucid Dreaming which will allow you to get back mp if you die. Just a thought.

I became Summoner back in 2013 because of Ifrit. I became Summoner again in 2014 on a new ff14 account and very recently I continued that second Summoner to lv 67 and my primal Egi's are presently Carbi Egi's(if you will). I play on PS4 so I would and started on PS3 back in the day, so I'm not on your level. I just do what I can, despite the fact that it may not be up to par for some and very recently, I'm having a terrible trial from time to time as Dark Knight. I recently came out of retirement and reattuned to the Darkness and I'm enjoying being That job as back after beating Heavens ward vanilla story, I lost the dark touch(if you will) and then hung up my Sword of Darkness, until very recently. Sorry for going off on that Dark tangent but I needed to vent a little as I am on and off again feeling the stress of tanking. I still love Summoner though and especially... DEATH FLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARE!XD

almost all the dps jobs ive tried feel like this now. samurai has kenki and sen to worry about, which forces you to constantly switch which buff/debuff your using, ninja has trick attack still but they got rid of excess moves in exchange for a shit ton of damage, bard got the song changes, black mage got umbral hearts which lets them cast way more... the list keeps going

quick question - when I have contagion on a target and I summon bahamut, the contagion buff disappears on the target no matter how much time is left - is this a glitch on the screen because I saw in the video it worked fine for you. I originally tried timing contagion with bahamut but gave up because I thought it didn't workthe only thing I can think of is I only have my dots/debuffs visible on the target, so maybe it treats something from garuda as not mine once garuda leaves and bahamut comes in? I'll have to test

Been playing SMN since 2.3ish. I've played nothing but SMN all the way through ARR and Heavensward and when people were starting to jump ship because of the Stormblood changes I was like "Y'all crazy, SMN is still good." A week later and SMN is still one of the best classes in the game and its even more rewarding to play well.

Whelp. Used to love playing SMN back when I was leveling classes. Was considering doing it somewhat soon-ish once the DPS queues died down again in a month or so. Guess not. Was under the impression that most of the DPS changes were cool and I'd enjoy them. I mean, don't get me wrong, it seems like they streamlined it a bit, but I absolutely HATE having to carefully watch my mp bar. It's why I originally liked BLM so much, because what is mp management? Though I'm curious. I'm a bit miffed about what they did to WAR. Any thoughts on that, or were you never really a WAR player?

not really a WAR player :p I did PLD and DRK, so I have some insight on that. to me it looks like they made WAR very clunky

They just kinda said "screw you" to WAR players in my opinion. The new skills they added are very situational and niche, with very little use to them. And the beast guage just dissuades you from using the new skills like Onslaught and Upheaval (Which are on 15 and 30 second cooldowns respectively) because why use those when you can Steel Cyclone or Fell Cleave?

I don't know. I mained the Summoner in ARR and HW and I played the class until 70 now and it feels so different because of the new focus and I spend so much time into the Level 60 Summoner so that it feels like a punch in the face.

I felt exactly the same, switched to Samurai and I'm totally in love. Also 20k+ crits are fun as hell haha. Sometimes things change and it becomes attractive to different people and no longer interesting to others. I played SMN since launch and I'm sad but...not all that devastated really, since I found a new job to play that I love pretty quick. Sometimes you just have to decide to move on. Move to where the fun is, for you.

I made the exact same switch. Still hoping they "fix" SMN, as it's been my main since 2.1. But I just find it to be too high risk / little reward in comparison to other jobs.

hey larry im in my first 6 months of ff14 so i was wondering if you could answer a question i got about the glamor. so lets say i glamor the current chest armor im wearing to look like something else but i get a stronger piece of chest armor if i equip it do i have to re-glamor or does it apply to it also?

Curious, what did you think of the SMN job quests? I personally didn't care much for them...they were interesting, but they felt kind've tacked on to me. And only lvl 65 and 70 were really all that interesting lol.

Hmmm I'm drawing a serious blank here, and I can't find the quest ANYWHERE online telling me what it contains...I thought that quest was just errand-running or something, with 65 and 70 being the only ones I recall having that dude and egi thing. But mayhap that is just my poor memory, and in that case I probably agree with you!
