Martin Luther tried to get the book of James thrown out of the canon for its take on works, and the Reformers have really run with the ball of "grace not works" in general. I get people should not try to earn salvation but many of them really are content to rest on the laurel of "grace" and do no good works so there's a danger in any over emphasis on grace. I have been around a lot of people both religious and secular in the US and other places and most all of them are fine with poverty as long as it doesn't affect them personally. Especially fine with it if they get higher profits by paying slave wages or cheap goods when others do.
