depends what the artist is using. if they are using a coil machine then it’s wiser to use multiple machines with different needles so you don’t spend time taking apart and tuning your machine for a new needle etc. most artists nowadays use rotary machines which allows them to swap out needles with cartridges.

Can someone explain why Mike would need more than one machine or why Oliver says he needs a minimum of eight machines? I know there are shaders and liners, etc, but does each element of a tattoo require a whole separate machine?

@Matt W. Theres machines that help you do different things like shaders, line work and color. Is possible to do a tat with one machine but the process can be difficult if you arent trained enough and can sometimes look sloppy. Also to avoid any mishap if the machine you use decides to die, you have another one ready to go.
