I think some of the tattoo artists will ask but the client will lie to them & say that they haven’t taken anything/are not under the influence. In one of these sorts of videos a lady talked about a client who was acting really weird and he ended up having to go to the hospital mid-tattoo or something bc he took horse tranquilizer. You can’t always know if a person is under the influence, and I’m sure most artists wouldn’t do it if they knew

Eh, it's not the law. A lot of shops have that rule in place to prevent people making stupid drunk decisions, but a lot more shops capitalise on it.

I think some tattoo artists have the reasoning that if someone's that drunk and they refuse to tattoo them they'll probably just go to the next shop to get it done, and if they tattoo them then at least they know that they're getting it done safely.

I have a kneeling demon on my left bicep and was sitting in the chair getting work done on my right arm when some really weird guy and girl came in. They were going crazy over the flash on the wall, pulled frames down to try them on laying on the benches, etc. Then they walked over and watched me get tattooed for a while and the guy said "Hey man, nice horse!" and wandered off. The artist and I did this double take and I asked "Dude, did you tattoo a horse on me?" He spun me around ( barber chairs rock) and stared at my tattoo, that he'd done, then pulled out a piece of paper, cut it up, taped it to my arm and held up the mirror. If you cover it up just right the demon's bent leg and arm sorta look like a horse skull. No idea how this kid saw it. My artist quipped he should charge me extra for hiding the horse in my demon. Wow, that was long. Happy ink to all!

I once had to redraw a design over and over for 3 hours straight because the client wasn't sure of how she wanted the design. She was so indecisive even when i tried to tell her what would look better and what not, it just didn't stick. When she was happy i thought the storm was over. Then came the stenciling... That took another 2 hours. Probably the most annoying client i ever had. Wasn't the first time either, though its never been as bad as that time. Luckily i kept it professional and kept my cool through the whole ordeal. Though i was almost about to start smoking again after that.

When I was about to get my first tattoo done there was a dude in the chair adjacent to me finishing up an arm piece. He seemed fine and stood up to check out the final product. Some of these stories from the tattoo artists are a little similar to things encountered by massage therapists. I have to say, no client has ever $hit their pants! But when you're dealing with the human body, things will happen from time to time that a person cannot control, like arousal etc. But also I felt akin about things; clients will expects treatments when they're clearly hammered, they want to also bargain with you with for the price of the treatment, last minute BS cancellations, laying on your table & you're the professional but they want to tell you how to do your job.....and often some simply cannot wait to expose their genetalia to you and have you work on it! 😐

As someone with tattoo's, It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise putting ink into your skin is not a healthy life choice. But yes it would be interesting to hear the facts & potential consequences. Though I highly doubt anyone in the industry would ever have the balls to speak up against the rest with their findings... If you do a little research you'll find even the most popular brands of ink with the highest quality control have "bad batches" & recalls more often than you'd think. Yes, they get put into peoples skin.

For one thing: if you are scared of allergies, go for black work and avoid red and yellow inks (I talked about this with an artist when I got my 2nd tattoo and the artist said those two colors are the most allergenic ones). Allergies can develop at everytime, so already having a tattoo with red or yellow ink doesn't matter much, only they are already nicely encapsulated by the immune system. New tats can cause new reactions. And obviously the issue with the needles is there. Even the most cleanly working artist might have an accidentally contaminated needle that causes infections. If you want to know what's in the inks, look up what kind of colorants are used and which kind of carriers those are dissolved in. If you know that, you can look up health risks. Or you could go extremely pragmatic and look up articles on it on Pubmed or Google Scholar (if you are scientifically literate).

Stuff like this needs to be seen by those who have a negative view of people who do tattoos and/or have tattoos. I lived in an area for a while that had a lot of really judgmental older people around, and it just got so frustrating. A coworker had a simple nose ring and got called "Metal Face" by some older guy, that's how strict people were! And this wasn't in the 50's...this was last year. Everyone with a tattoo was a "druggie" or "on the wrong path". I loved the day one guy came into my workplace with a shirt that said "Tattooed AND Employed".I know some of these people have "a past" but that's their business. I know plenty of untattooed people who are shit heads I'd never talk to if I was paid. On this show, I've seen nothing but artists who got into tattooing because they love it and have a passion for people and art. All of them seem pretty down to earth , professional, smart, respectful, and show all those things in how they approach their clients. Good on them.
