Honestly, I am so happy they featured more canvases with darker skin and showing its possibly to gain decent tonal value and color. On Ink Master, people would immediately blame their lack of ability or knowledge of color theory on the canvas' skin. Ryan Ashley knew the issue and just came up with a new strategy.

Such an ignorant thing to say. Some of these artist are from European countries with less than 2% total population black people and half of those are light skinned. They very well may have never tattooed a dark skinned person. In America 13% of population are African and most of them live in a couple dense areas Atlanta, NY, LA, Chicago, Detroit and a few others. Also black customers overwhelmingly choose black artists to do their work. Tattooing dark skin is truly a niche like stick and poke. Is it the artists fault Wesley snipes never came to them for a tattoo?

Interesting how Scientific's Mary/Jesus tattoo was called really readable, yet it took me like the 10th time looking at it to even see that Jesus was in there, not just Mary's long flowing robe. It should be taken into consideration though. A GREAT tattoo artist should help their canvas with breathing techniques and talk them thru the pain when they can help it. When some of these people ignore the pain or get angry when their canvas needs a second, I feel like that's the mark of a bad tattoo artist. You just get a sensitive person every now and then and you have to adapt to it

I understand a competition adds pressure, but I feel like a lot of the clients who gave up would have lasted a little longer if their tattoo artists were more understanding of the fact they're people too with pain limitations. I'll give it to you, though. I'm not sure why someone would volunteer to be tattooed for a competition when they know they have a low pain tolerance. Jimmy Butcher is such a cool guy! One of my good friends is his apprentice at his shop here in Savannah and when I go in to get a tattoo by her he's always super friendly and reassuring. He has nothing but nice things to say about his time meeting (and tattooing) against Ryan! He said that when the show reached out to him to be featured, they asked if it he feels comfortable going up against her and he was like," Hell yeah! She's badass, even if I lose just getting to work alongside her would be sick." Super chill guy, and I wish he would be on the show one day but I asked and he didn't seem to keen on the idea. I guess we'll see! If anyone is ever in the Savannah area, hit up The Butcher on Bay Street for a chance to get worked on! Everyone there is so, so talented and friendly! It's appointment only so make sure to give the shop a call to check availability.

knowing nothing about tattoos and going strictly based on aesthetics, i didnt think anybody came close to ryan. after seeing the show, i realize that there are a ton of categories that are taken into consideration but straight up basing on what appeals to my eye, ryan really separates herself imo. btw my favorite tattoos are the black/grey pieces of greco-roman (or viking) statues, warriors and deities. (tattoos that would look at home as a portrait in a museum)

It was really nice to see that soft moment with Ryan and her canvas in that last one. I think we see tattooers as these badd ass don't give a fuck people because of the work that they do. The LIGHTHOUSE was great but it gets lost due to how similar an application the water (not that one crashing wave) and the sky were. All of his time was in that structure. The birds look like an after thought and will get lost in that haze of a sky over time. Ryan's main issue was time. The fire looks more like fog. But, you can tell she didn't use similar application methods and nothing gets lost.
