Inkscape Tutorial: Abstract Circle Logo Tutorial

I've seen some cool looking designs like this around the web and thought teaching how to create something similar with Inkscape would make for a good tutorial. Enjoy!

Thanks. Yeah practicing these steps over and over really helps in grasping exactly what they do and why they're used. Once you have an understanding of this, you'll be able to create graphics of your own. That's the point of these tutorials -- to show how the software works, but when put into some context. hey nick, im new to inkscape and im doing pretty well following along with your tutorial except where you move the crosshairs (at 8:55). Mine wont snap like your did. Ive played around with all the snap buttons so im wondering if there is a setting i dont have right. thanks

Nice!! Thank you for the tutorial. I would suggest you to keep a miniature of the finished logo in a corner of the video. It would help to follow the process. Maybe theres enough space on upper righ one. However, thank you!

Hi, thanks for all of your videos, its great that you share your knowledge freely. I was wondering how did you learn to use programs like inkscape? And i was also wondering if you could make or direct me to a video that explains how all the path functions work and gives examples on how and when to use them. Could you also do or direct me to one that shows how to properly save or export something for use outside of inkscape?

I actually learned how to use Illustrator first, many years ago. Then I found out about Inkscape and was able to learn it rather fast because of how similar it is. I also learned how to use it by watching video tutorials. HeathenX's tutorials were how I learned at first.

Any idea how to make inkscape or gimp scale properly (to where you can see the menus, etc.) on a 4K resolution, even at 150% or 250%? its so tiny and not usable. Thanks

Thank you. Those fragments are actually an error in the program (I think) and shouldn't be there. I've learned about this because of how long I've used the program and how often I've run into problems because of it.

I have 2 Problems: Between two pieces I have this super tiny white line (only see it with two strong diffrent colors). Seond: Although all Snapps ON, the little plus sign to rotate a piece doesn't snapp anywhere.

I can't get the rotating point to snap at the cusp. And after I eyeball it and rotate the shape, I get the same result as you do.

Hi Nick, thanks for that tutorial. I know the other one. Your´s much easier, but the other is good also. I don´t want to make it bad. I like your tutorials and want to thank you, that I can improve my Inkscape knowledge. Every week I´m looking forward to a new one. What I did with the white segments and the shadow is that I copied it, rotate it 90 deg and moved it to the next segment. Here I snaped it to the "spiky" knote (custom knote). So I have 4 equal segments and save time. I´m using Inkscape 0.91 and here is something different. Why are you using Ink 0.48? Is there a special reason? I also like your explaination during the tutorial. It can help to understand what you are doing sometimes. You get better with each tutorial. kind regards Michael

As always, very nice tutorial. What I did was almost identical to you Michael. I created one complete segment (color gradient, highlight and shadow) and grouped it together. Then for each of the remaining three segments I duplicated, rotated 90 deg, used the align tools to place (left/right, top/bottom) relative to the original circle and changed the color gradient. Maybe I was only able to use the align tools due to the shape of my segments was slightly different from Nick´s?

Thanks, your method works as well (and is probably faster.) I'm using Inkscape 48 because I like it better for a variety of minor reasons. Probably. I've noticed snapping glitches with Inkscape sometimes. What usually works for me is opening a new document and copy & pasting everything into it and trying there. Usually does the trick.
