Your analysis of the old piece is astounding and I loved hearing your thought process on how to improve the elements that maybe didn't best convey the message you wanted. Your work is always so thought provoking and that clearly comes from how much thought you put into it. 2017 was my best attempt at Inktober so far, and there is a self portrait piece from then that I'm definitely considering revisiting now!

I still have this artbook displayed in my room. I was put into inpatient of November 7th of 2017, but your concepts, drawings, and the opportunity you gave to your viewers to come to their own interpretations made me feel so much less alone.

This piece was one of my favourites from that first inktober. It spoke to me so personally. The feeling of always treading water, while ruited below, trying to grow as the water rises. I have felt that way so many times in my life. But also the beauty that is created from reaching out of that deep dark place of isolation. It gave me hope, and made me feel seen. This new piece is gorgeous! It doesn't say the same thing to me but that makes it no less beautiful and poignant. Thank you for your art! I can't wait to get the calendar! 😍

KZbin is weird about sending people notifications of new uploads T_T I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I wouldn't want to redraw all 31 drawings as I'm keen to explore new concepts now and have outgrown some of 2017 designs, but there a few I would like to redo some day for sure, so stay tuned ^^

Wow, what a difference 5 years and 5 kazillion drawings makes! I didn't realise that I started watching your channel so early on in your youtubing career, your videos have always seemed so polished. The newer work is definitely stronger technically, compositionally and conceptually. I have fallen in love with copic markers. I'm currently making very large works (100 cm x 70 cm) and really exploring pushing colour and expressive marks to the limit. I love the transparency of alcohol markers and the vibrancy of the colour. There's something really magical about them.

This was fascinating to learn! LOVE the video! And nom nom nom those bubbles, the water patterns, the flow of the shirt and those plants! Absolutely love this video! So cool to hear about your reasoning in 2017 and 2022, great format!

I hadn’t truly absorbed the difference between your work over time until this video. I do think it’s interesting how dark surrealism often is interpreted as gore or death. I have always gravitated towards it because of its looseness and the ability to incorporate imagination instead of just reality while still anchoring the piece with a darker color palette or theme. But I have found that as I got tired of people misinterpreting my work, I moved away from dark surrealism and more into an impressionistic / rococo style? So it was interesting to hear that you’ve also adapted so that your work is interpreted differently. Mental health also played a large part in my shift towards brighter art as well though. Side note, you brought up millais’ Ophelia and I recently did a master copy where I drew inspiration from that piece and the new Netflix movie and it’s one of my favorite pieces but it also taught me so much. But as always, love your videos and am always happy to see them in my feed! Hope you are well!

I absolutely loved how you discussed the differences between the two works and the different impacts they made based on simple details such as texture and positioning. I also felt that with your 2017 piece, the position of the figure feels very stagnant, as if the subject is defeated and has given up. Yet with your 2022, with changing the pose slightly, giving them a softer stance and grasping onto a root, even if it's just lightly, gives the impression that there is hope, or at the very least, this is a peaceful decision to float rather than being forced to take root because there is no other option. Either way, I found it very interesting to see the difference in your art style. I stumbled upon you only a couple years ago, so I am more familiar with your newer work ("Shelter" was the first piece of yours I ever saw). And as an artist myself, it's strange and fascinating that our style gradually shits over time and how we may not even notice the full extent of the difference until we compare them side by side. As for art challenges, I am actually doing my first art challenge this month! Instead of doing full pieces (because that is very intimidating), I will be doing a little prompted doodle in my journal every day.

@@myriamtillson I was at a gallery that shows my larger embroidered works. A woman was asking me a lot of serious and in depth questions about my work and process. She then asked me what I was listening to (if anything) while I made the work (which took about 400 hours to complete). I think she was expecting me to say something profound and looked somewhat shocked when I answered, " I watched all 6 series of Gossip Girl" (the original, of course) 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'm so glad you shared *all* of your process. I've only recently discovered your channel while looking for some 'approachable' gouache lessons, and I had so many questions when looking at your work (esp the dark images), but you answered all them, both directly and indirectly. Your analysis of this image before and after was so perceptive and enjoyable and I felt very privileged to be a part of it. I'd love to see what you are doing in 5 or 10 yrs time. You are young so you have LOTS of time to experiment and develop even more. Best wishes for a very fulfilling future. One QUESTION re PATREON: Do you teach/demonstarte/share more on gouache? I'm only just starting (having played with mixing white with watercolour) and I can see from other of your videos that you are very comfortable with the medium. Try not to let the YT rating nonsense get to you. Mind of Watercolour stuck to his own way of doing vids and he now has a HUGE following. Just keep being you and doing what you do. You both share two important qualities - naturalness and integrity.

@@myriamtillson Anyways I'll be doing my own personal Inktober this year with the 22' prompt list. I haven't been doing art for long. Just since March but I'm excited to challenge myself. I won't be sharing anything to social media since I don't and won't have any. Just my profile pics and banners on here. Someday I'd like to make videos maybe. I used to when I was into gaming, I'd stream a lot and had a collection of funny videos which are still on my Rumble channel under a different name. But art? Whoooo no one could criticize my skill at poppin' fools in CS GO or downing raid bosses in WoW but art is personal lol...In other words I'm hesitant right now.
