This is his best (most precise) film in my opinion. Hypnosis is the recurring theme here. There are a lot of important details that you can mistake for imperfections due to the video quality. One cue is the scene of misunderstanding between the director and Bucky J played by David Lynch. There is a squeal of the door as the old witch enters the house and says hello. A bird flies right above as Nikki enters the studios. And so on and so on. BTW I hated it the first time I saw it too.

You really can't watch a Lynch film just the once and have a meaningful opinion. But I do feel 'Inland Empire' makes 'Mulholland Drive', 'Lost Highway' and even 'Fire Walk With Me' look pretty straightforward by comparison

2 of your comments were so spot on. [1] *This is David Lynch's most indulgent film* (although Twin Peaks: The Return may have changed that...still, it isn't strictly a "film") and [2] *This film was probably more fun to make than it is to watch* . Even for the most diehard David Lynch fans, this film takes the cake as his most impenetrable. I've yet to hear (or devise) a convincing theory about everything that's really going on in this film. There does seem to be a common theme of "spirituality" in a lot of analyses I've read - past lives, non-linear time, karma, etc. In any case, Laura Dern's performance is pretty phenomenal, as is the fact that David didn't work with a script and just wrote & filmed scenes ad nauseam. As it turns out, there are LOTS of strange and peculiar factoids about this film. Anyway, great review - thanks! (Be sure to watch the video of DL promoting Dern with a cow on Sunset Blvd.)

It’s my fav film of his but yeah, it’s indulgent. But it’s like his thesis. And I love every moment of it. My next watch will be my 12th

I don’t like the hypnosis allegory people are quick to point out when, at least to me, it’s clear these characters WANT to be hypnotized, they are sitting on thoughts and wants but need the motivation to push themselves over the edge…

Also, some of the More Things That Happened scenes contextualize The Rabbits - there’s a scene where Laura Dern as Niki as Susan Blue moves through a corridor in her husband’s house carrying a candle the same way the third Rabbit does earlier. I don’t wanna say what I believe it to truly mean but it gives context.

I love almost every Lynch movie with all my heart but will never understand the appeal of Inland Empire. Good video.

'Eraserhead' was actually Lynch's first feature, but he had made a handful of shorts before, including 'The Alphabet' and 'The Grandmother' (which I regard as one of his strongest achievements).

I still need to check out those short films.

this is definitely his most abstract film but ts not his worst. The meta commentary on movies and the 3 stories lapsing over each other is very hypnotizing to watch. I understand why people don't like it because it does ask a lot of patience. to me the movie is more of a cinematic representation of a dream. the only thing that even remotely reminds me of this movie are Ryan Trecartin's "films"

Great stuff as always Jerry! The only David Lynch film I ever saw was The Elephant Man. I have had a few times where I liked a director or actor and was disappointed in there latest film. I did see a strange movie lately called Blood On Melies Moon by Luigi Cozzi. I must admit, I only got it because of the George Melies connection and the cover art. I know those are probably terrible reasons to get a movie. I was going to recommend it because you seem to review a lot of movies I don't see other people reviewing but I don't know if you would care for it. I'm not familiar with the director or his other work. On a different note, I did order that other Santo movie you showed during that two movie Santo set review. Thanks again for all the Great information!

I’m not familiar with that Cozzi film, but I may look into it. Thanks as always for your feedback!
