Inlay Process

Time lapse video showing Zach's process of inlaying a piece of copper in an ebony end graft. The inlay is inset then made flush with surrounding surfaces with a polished biopoxy resin.
This particular guitar will get stained so little attention was made to keep the maple completely clean and white. If you do want to keep dark dust out of white wood be sure to do all sanding with a vacuum attachment sanding block.

That's an excellent tip Zach using the chalk to highlight the cut. The inlaid Maple leaves I put on the electric I built I worked with a bright light and cut until the whiskers disappeared strenuous on my old eyes😂. So I'll try this next time. 72 years old and still learning! Thanks👍🏼

Haha, well you don’t want to stop learning - that would be a sign to be worried. ;) The chalk is just one of the many super simple tricks (often the best ones).

Does the epoxy preserve the copper from further patina?

I'm really a fan of the patina'd copper inlays like this. Tom Sands uses it in his rosettes and back straps, such a cool look! Stupid question, where do you find copper sheet in Canada?

Copper and wood is a great combination. Metal inlays have been used for hundreds of years in instruments so it’s nothing new. I order my copper sheets from various online suppliers - basically you just have to look it up on Google and it’ll pop up. :) -Zach
