“This song is very different to Stairway to Heaven.” Welcome to Led Zeppelin. This song could have easily been titled Whole Lotta Sex. The double neck guitar is a six and a twelve string on one body. It’s used so Jimmy doesn’t have to switch guitars in the middle of a song. Check out Since I’ve Been Loving You from them… or anything really.

Like your reaction. The double guitar is a six string on the bottom and 12 string on the top which produce different tones. Led Zeppelin does a lot of blues type rock songs. This song came out when a quad sound system was trying to hit the market where the sound was broken into 4 track instead of just 2 tracks like in stereo. the middle of the song gives a swirling effect where it seems like its spinning around you which works great off a quad system. I had a friend in high school who had a quad system when this song came out and it worked great. Quad systems never real took off and few artist recorder in quad but you can still get the effect off of headphones even in stereo.

This song was released as the lead track on their 2nd album in dec.1969. It was decades ahead of its time, and shot their popularity into outer space, taking the top world group title from the Beatles, who had held it since 1962. The sounds created in the middle section have been described well enough below, what I didn't see mentioned is that they are creating the sound of a sexual encounter, climaxing (pun intended) with the drum roll and guitar solo!

Te double neck is a 12 string on one neck and 6 on the other.. The beginning of Stairway to Heaven uses the 12 to get the sound he wanted. The 6 for the ending guitar solo. . Thhe reason for a double neck is to not have to have to change guitars in the middle of the song..

Okay, so I don't play guitar, and I'm no guitar expert, but I think the purpose of the double-necked guitar (or "popsicle guitar" as I call it. I don't think anyone else calls it that, I just call it that because it reminds me of those popsicles with the two sticks that you can break in half. Anyway) is that one of the necks is stringed with six strings, the other with twelve. Also, one of the necks is shorter than the other. This means each half produces a different sound from the other depending on which side is being played. It's basically two separate guitars smooshed into one, and I believe the purpose of this is that, ordinarily, when being played live, the guitarist would not be able to play both kinds of guitars on a single song, not without a considerable pause between playing while they switched guitars. But with this guitar, all he needs to do is move from one side of the guitar to the other to switch the guitar sound instantly. I think that's what that's all about. People who actually know more about guitars, please correct me if I'm wrong.

The double neck guitar is a 12 string on the top neck and a standard 6 string on the bottom. The musician can either play the top or bottom neck depending on what kind of sound he wants. 12 strings will give a richer and fuller sound.

About the guitars, if you look closely in the video, the top arm has 12 strings and the lower arm has the standard 6 string. the 12 string basically has a different sound set. it's easier to carry the one double necked guitar them to wear 2 guitar during the performance...

That unique sound is created by Jimmy using a violin bow to drag across the strings of the guitar. Also, the double neck guitar is for when you need two different guitar sounds in the song as both necks are tuned differently. You only play one neck at a time but can switch to the other when needed for a different sound. Also, try the live version of 'Dazed and Confused' to see how Jimmy uses the violin bow. It is amazing.
@malcolmwood5676

This particular guitar appears to have one 6 string and one 12 string neck. But you could of course use a double 6 string to switch quickly between two different tunings. I have also seen a bass / guitar hybrid. However, I struggle hard enough to play a normal guitar.

It's a Gibson twin neck. The top neck is 12 string and the lower is 6 string. It is great for quick switching guitar sounds from section to section in a piece of music. The pickups can be set to different tones as well as the switch in character between 6 and 12 string sounds.

Not sure if this is true but I heard on a radio program years ago (1980s) that this song was about a married female fan who was obsessed with Robert Plant in England when they were starting out. The strange electronic sounds in the middle part of Whole Lotta Love are produced using an instrument called a theramin. Played by guitarist Jimmy Page, the theramin had an antenna that controlled the pitch and volume of the tones depending on the distance and height of his hand relative to the antenna. Page can be seen playing the theramin in the live version of Whole Lotta Love from the 1973 concert at Madison Square Garden.

If I ever have to pick a song being the last one I may ever listen to it will be this one. It has everything a rock song needs and more. Paige is brilliant on the guitar and using a violin bow to make unique sounds during the break is fantastic. Plant's vocals are not from this world. Drummer Jon Bonhom plays his drum like a machine gun and John Paul Jones playing the jazz bass is without knowing a real fitting word, "fat". And the lyrics, well, it is obvious what it is about and the music with the lyrics combined is 5.33 minutes of bedroom activity ... with happy end. Listen to the song a few more times and you will never take it from your playlist anymore. It just is that awesome.

This was from 1969 from 'Led Zeppelin II' (Led Zeppelin's 2nd album), and before Led Zeppelin debuted in early 1969, there was no such thing as 'heavy rock' or 'heavy metal'... U had guitar-oriented bands like Jimi Hendrix Experience, Vanilla Fudge, and The Who... but music back then was The Beatles, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, etc... Even Jimmy Page (guitar) was in a band called The Yardbirds until 1968, which is when he put Led Zeppelin together and recorded their debut album. The power behind Led Zeppelin was definitely John Bonham's powerhouse drumming... combined w/ Robert Plant's high vocals... That was what made Zeppelin's first album the first 'heavy rock' record... Jimmy Page (guitar) wanted to harness that power w/ the bass grooves of John Paul Jones and added layers of guitar to make the music heavier... The songs were intense and blues-oriented. Nobody had heard anything like it before, and in 1969, the album rapidly sold and gave Led Zeppelin instant fame. Hoping to capitalize on their live power in concert... Page recorded 'Led Zeppelin II' in 1969 w/ more original songs and added more layers of instruments to make the record a classic... He would experiment in the studio w/ sounds and depth while recording and gave the album a quality that changed music forever. 'Whole lotta love' was released as a single in 1969 and it became a huge hit... 'Led Zeppelin II' went to #1 on the US charts and Led Zeppelin were massive by 1970 after just 2 years as a band. They eventually had to give credit to blues songwriter Willie Dixon for the track... Those 2 Zeppelin records inspired a plethora of bands to play heavy rock music... Deep Purple changed their sound in 1970 to play heavy rock... Black Sabbath also debuted in 1970... There wasn't a band in the 70's (or 80's) who wasn't inspired by Led Zeppelin. They were the originators of what became heavy metal and hard rock music. And this was where it began... Years later, the members of Led Zeppelin rejected the term 'heavy metal'... they wanted to be known for their diverse sound (that included acoustic music) and not just as a 'heavy rock' band 😈

Oh wow! Thank you very much for the explanation! So iconic of them to refuse the “heavy metal” term!

Hi , great to see new generations start loving the great bands of all times. When Zeppelin recorded stairway to heaven Page did It with three diferents guitars, two of them Gibson, but he knows how dificult is to change the guitar three times on a live concert , decided ask to Gibson the possibility to build a double neck guitar especialy done for him and then he can be abel to do this masterpiece with the diferences sound and tunes. Sorry for my english Keep on rocking . I'm rom Barcelona.

Look at their 1973 concert at Madison Square Garden. The double-neck guitar has a 12-string on the top and a standard 6-string on the bottom neck. You are listening to "Hard Rock" which is Riff based, consisting of a 3-4 person band, the music has roots in American Blues. Being a sophisticated listener means you have developed a deeper understanding of what it takes to make the sound you're hearing, musicianship etc. One does not just touch a guitar string and out comes what you're hearing. Sensitivity of touch and manipulation, along with carefully selected tube amplifiers and sound effect pedals and boxes are combined and offer an infinite soundscape that must be expertly manipulated to produce what you're listening to. Have a few drinks before listening to this music.

This was one of my favorite songs back in 1969, the beer tasted good when this was playing on the juke boxes and radios. Too bad they only had a few songs that I liked back then.

"I wanna be your backdoor man". A backdoor man is an old term for the lover of a married woman, the husband goes to work out the front door then the lover comes in through the back door. lol
