Their costumes have evolved, starting basically all five in simalar maid costumes (checkout Thrill MV). I see them like this, Misa (bass) is a Ninja Assassin Maid, Saiki (lead vocals) is the head of houshold maid, Akane (drums) partly for practical reasons she moved to shorts and now her current knickerbockers whilst keeping the maid aesthetic - a pageboy look if you will. Miku (Rhythm guitar) is the cute Maid Cafe look and Kanami (lead guitar) is the classic Victorian maid

The fact that she wears a maid outfit is the idea of side guitarist, lyricist, and side vocalist Miku Kobato. She works at a maid cafe in Akihabara and had the idea to form a rock band wearing her maid outfit. Miku found Kanami, the lead guitarist and main composer, on the internet, and Kanami invited Akane, the drummer who had played together, and Akane invited Misa, the bassist who was in the same music school. Aiming for a band sound, Miku feels that her voice is weak for hard rock, so she tricks Saiki, who was in the same music office, into joining. This is the birth of BAND-MAID. The sequel is a legend. IMO, one of the best rock bands on the planet right now. BAND-MAID is a rare rock band consisting of five outstanding musicians, all of whom are front. It's a natural rock band and completely different from BEBYMETAL.

These girls just ooze with talent. If you decide to stay with them, which is highly recommended, you will discover one of the best bands touring today. There are no bad songs....130+ of them. Their costumes were mandated at first by Miku (founder, backing vocals, rhythm guitar, red rose) but after a short bit Saiki (lead singer, blue rose) and MISA (lead bass) thought different (were way cooler than that) and were allowed to go another direction while still maintaining the look. Akane (drums) and Kanami (lead guitar) enjoy the look so they stayed with it.

They are nothing like BABYMETAL, who are Idol Pop singers/dancers performing with a heavy metal band. You can see all the Maids wearing maid outfits in their earliest videos. However, SAIKI and MISA were never fully on board with the maid aesthetic, so their outfits eventually morphed into the Spanish and Chinese-inspired looks you see here.

Band-Maid can be a dive down the rabbit hole: there are many tales to tell. The maid costumes in particular. This is how it started: Miku Kobato was a singer with Platinum Passport management. Her failed idol group had broken up. She had been working as a server at an Akihabara maid café, loved her maid costume, and really enjoyed the maid café service concept. Miku enjoyed hard rock music and thought it would be cool to be in a band where the cute maid costumed band would play unexpectedly hard rock music. Miku calls it "The Gap". She presented this idea to Platinum Passport who told her to go recruit a band and they would see how things went. They placed an ad for auditions and told Miku to look online for musicians. This was in 2013. Kanami Tono was self posting guitar covers online when Miku found her, contacted her, and explained the "Maid Band" concept to her. Kanami liked the maid costume idea since it removed the problem of having to decide what to wear while performing. She wanted to play hard rock and agreed to give Band-Maid a try. She had a drummer friend who accompanied her on her song demos. Akane Hirose was recruited into Band-Maid when Kanami phoned her and told her about it. She thought the maid costumes were silly, but Akane also wanted to play hard rock, and figured that the "Maid Idea" wasn't any sillier than a lot of other crazy ideas that had been pitched to her. So she signed on, too. Akane also knew a really good bass player. Misa (yes, just MISA) was Akane's close friend, a classmate at TSM, and they had played gigs together. The rock band she was in had just broken up and she was looking for another band when Akane called her. She met with Akane and Kanami who explained the "Maid Band" idea to her. She didn't like the idea of dressing like maids, a past experience in an all female band had been bad, but like the others, she wanted to play hard rock. So she signed on even though she was not enthused about wearing a maid uniform. The band started rehearsing and playing gigs in the Tokyo club scene. Miku quickly realized that her voice was not a strong enough match for Misa, Akane, and Kanami's bass, drums, and guitar. They held an audition for a lead singer. Recent High School graduate Saiki Atsumi had just moved to Tokyo, had landed a modeling gig and was auditioning for back up singer gigs when the other Band-Members heard her sing. They really liked what they had heard, wanted her badly, but after seeing that the maid uniform idea was met by less and less acceptance by Akane and Misa, they decided not to mention that aspect and simply told her about the music they wanted to play. Saiki signed on and they started rehearsing. Saiki was furious when she showed up at their first gig and they handed her the maid costume. She threw the apron away after the performance was over. Saiki and Misa both hated the maid uniforms and the costumes evolved once Band-Maid started gaining traction. (That's another crazy story!) They all had a personal hand in designing what they now call their "Battle Armor." Akane found the maid outfit too hot and constricting to play drums, so her costume is designed around her comfort. Kanami's now looks like something from a Dicken's novel. Miku is dressed in a fluffy ruffled anime maid outfit. Saiki, the fashionista, has taken the maid motif in an elegant, sexy direction. Misa settled on an costume that, at a distance, resembles either a Chinese housekeeper or a Ninja warrior, earning her the nickname "The Barefoot Assassin" since she prefers to perform barefoot. If you get the chance to see them live, you'll notice that all their costumes look gorgeous, every one of them.

Band-Maid has been around for 10 years. When they started they all wore the same maid outfit but it quickly became clear that some of the members did not feel comfortable in them. The band claims they all still wear maid outfits but now the outfits reflect each members personality. Many are quick to compare them to Baby-Metal but after a few more listens it will be clear that they are very different. I'd recommend listening to some of their official live videos such as, Domination, Freedom, Play, Real Existence, and No God. They also have some great music videos, such as Dice, Warning, Choose Me, Blooming, and Thrill (their first big song from 8 years ago where they are all still in similar maid outfits). The success of Thrill saved the band from breaking up. For their softer side, I'd recommend Daydreaming, About Us, and Memorable.

In fairness to reactors they usually hear about Band-Maid through comments left on Babymetal videos. I never got Babymetal but they did help open the door for this wave of Japanese Metal that has so many great bands.

Loved your reaction but Baby metal and Band Maid have nothing in common except being Japanese, I love both though ! Band Maid are my favourite band over 100 songs and not one bad one. This song is about a woman who is having an affair with a married man and knowing she will never be his number 1. Miku the rhythm guitarist (maid dress, red rose) writes the lyrics and they are always thoughtful and meaningful. I would suggest you react to 'Domination' the official live next. Enjoy !!

Puzzle is a very heavy, intense song (one of my favourites) for a first time reaction. I suggest you react to Freedom from their 2020 World Domination Tour. A bit more pop rock with a great drum solo. Some ballad type song suggestions would be Smile, About Us and Memorable. After that only about 100 more good ones.🙂

Band Maid are very popular in the West and tour in the US. They mix English into their lyrics so crowds can sing along and join in. They are probably the most fan friendly band around. They enjoy watching reaction videos and if they spot a fan in the audience who has done a video will point them out. The write their own music and lyrics although in the early days had songs written by writers. Mainly rock music but frankly they are very musicians. They now wear Maid costumes for comfort. All are variations on the different Maid Cafe look.

If you watch the video “Thrill” they all have maid outfits. Their clothes evolved to each member. Singer Saiki first removed her apron. She didn’t care for that look. She has chosen over the years to what you have now. More of a hostess look. Bass player,Misa, also changed. She usually plays barefoot. Fans call her “Barefoot Assassin”. Drummer,Akane, at one point she changed over to wearing shorts. It made her more comfortable. Lead guitar,Kanami, doesn’t mind the look. She has changed the style somewhat. Rhythm guitar , backup vocals and founder of band as pretty much stayed the same. They’re extremely talented and fun to watch. I can’t think of any songs that I don’t care for. @@GaryHolloway-810 But of course Gary, but I need to be gentlemanly and offer the option. ;) Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead. Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition. Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition. Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music. Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well) So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance. And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD! ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!! Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan. Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning" On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"... The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited) This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their KZbin channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill. Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid. Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band. Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed. Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University. Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs. MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls. Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

Puzzle. Interesting first choice. This song sits firmly in the middle of their overall sound. Musically they go far to the slower ballad side and far into the crazy heavy/fast side. You are correct that they bounce between English and Japanese but with about a 80/20 mix. They are in their 10th Anniversary year and are amazing to see live. To answer your question about the costumes, they have evolved over the years. They started out as matching almost perfectly and as time has gone on, each member has moved toward something more their personal style. The singer (Saiki) and the bass player (MISA) were never big fans of the concept so have moved further away than the others. The Drummer (Akane) has moved to a shorts and dress shirt/bow tie theme out of comfort. Only Miku (gt and vox) and Kanami (lead gt) have stayed true to the original concept.

Band-maid is one of the best rock bands in the world today. Check out Domination (live), Freedom (live), Different, Dice, Thrill, Choose me, After Life or Warning! Many Japanese bands and Artists mix English into their songs. Couple of Bands and Artists have released the same songs in both languages. Band-Maid usually have couple of English words or short phrases into their songs. Another Japanese Band that you should react to is Scandal. The maid costumes are to create "the Gap" meaning the difference in what you are seeing "demure maids" vs what you are hearing "hard rock". They all wearing maid costumes, Saiki, vocals, is wearing a Spanish style and MISA, bass is Chinese style. FYI they refer to their costumes as their "Battle Armor"!! They have total control of their music, from creation to the order the songs are on the album. The Japanese/English lyrics mix is for lyric flow. Example - the word YOU in Japanese has 3 syllables. Also a lot of Japanese know some English as it is taught in school. Stage presence/charisma isn't learned, you have it or you don't. Band Maid and Babymetal are a force on stage because of it. But so does Lovebites, Nemophila and most Kpop groups such as Blackpink.

I seem to think that although they began with matching fabric and design in their early days, they now deviate into the look of various service roles: the servers, the chef, the hostess. The interesting thing though is that much like KISS in the seventies, they will not do interviews or after show meet and greets without being in their "battle gear." Ah, yes, the outfits. To make a short story long, Miku (rhythm guitar/backing vocals/lyricist) had worked in maid cafes and thought that a band dressed in outfits associated with sexy submissiveness playing hard, in-your-face rock would be a great hook. Kanami (lead guitar/songwriter/principal arranger) loved the idea, largely because she has no fashion sense and this way she never had to worry about what to wear on stage. Akane (drummer) thought the idea was dumb but fun, but didn't like how the costume restricted her movement. MISA (bass) hated the costumes, and almost didn't join because of them. After MISA's reaction, Miku only told Saiki (lead vocals) that they would wear 'cute costumes ' when performing. Saiki was horrified when she saw them, not because they were maid uniforms, but because they were boring and dowdy (Saiki is quite the fashionista). Eventually, things came to a head, and Akane (the leader the band doesn't have) decreed that everyone could design their own outfits, as long as they stuck to the maid theme. Kanami kept the traditional maid outfit. Miku started heading deep into cosplay maid territory, like she owned stock in the ruffle-and-flounce factory. Akane initially ditched the apron, shortened the skirt, and ripped out the shoulder seams of the blouse. Later, Miku helped her make a black and white jumper that suggests a maid uniform while leaving her limbs totally free. Saiki took a Spanish head housekeeper's uniform, sexed it up, and emerged looking like a sexy dominatrix head maid. And MISA showed up in a black dress, claiming it was a Croatian maid uniform. Or maybe Lithuanian. She finally went with Ninja maid uniform, because 'you'll never see her cleaning. ' Later, she switched to a Chinese servants outfit. (The above is true in spirit, but not necessarily 100% accurate. )

5:51 the reason only some of them wearing maid costume you have to look back to the founder of the band Miku - guitarist/sub-vocal with the red rose on her head the founder she worked as a maid in maid-cafe in japan she want to make a band that play a cool rock song in the maid outfit. so she found the first member Kanami - Lead guitarist who play the solo through Kanami's YTchannel and ask her to join Kanami had played guitar in the school event in maid outfit so she has no problem with it. then Kanami introduce Akane to Miku as a drummer. Akane-Drummer/Band leader she asked by Miku to join the band but she a bit uncomfortable to play in maid outfit but still decide to join since she love the song they have at that time. and then Akane introduce Misa to them as a Bassist. Misa-Bassist was in the same music school with Akane and yeah Miku ask her to wear maid outfit but she too reluctant to wear it except in their first official single name "Thrill" I think. so after that Misa chose not to wear it again lol. At first they have only 4 members in the band and they was in a company by Miku as a vocalist. at some point Miku felt that her tone didn't suit for their style of song so she has to learn to play guitar so she ask Kanami to teach her and have to "trick" a new vocalist in to band. Saiki-Vocalist audition into their company as she think she might became an idol trainee or something. and when Miku know about her and Miku learned her lesson from Akane and Misa so instead of ask her to wear maid outfit Miku told Saiki that they play cool music in "cute outfit" instead of "maid outfit" then after the song "Thrill" we never saw Misa and Saiki in "full maid outfit"(Full maid outfit = Maid outfit with apron while Saiki outfit look similar to maid outfit but she didn't have apron and only have maid hairpiece) ever since :D and Akane change from the skirt one into shorts one.

Japanese culture in general has a very strong sense of social identity, but also encourages anything learned from outside their culture to be absorbed and perfected, they are a driven people & never do anything half way. In a society where perfection is the bare minimum, second place is unthinkable. This is something they would apply to performance art as well.

Agreed ... Band Maid is a great club act, Whereas .. Baby Metal fills stadiums. They both have their place in the genre of rock. Some people lean towards the harder Baby Metal scene and others towards the Rock/Pop Band Maid. I have seen Band Maid twice in concert now and they are Amazing!! Finally going to get to see Baby Metal in September, after failing to be able to get tickets for the Japanese Shows this spring. So much variety coming out of Japan right now .. Can't wait to catch Hanabie here in a few months also.

THE ENGLISH, GERMAN, SPANISH ETC CAPTIONS ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. THE MUSIC GETS SO GREAT THAT YOU ARE TOO DISTRACTED TO CATCH THE ENGLSH. I'd recommend checking out Band Maid - Domination official live video. And, not to sound like a troll, but I get a bit annoyed when Band Maid is compared to Babymetal. Babymetal is a corporate created idol group. The girls in Babymetal do not play, write, or arrange the songs. Band Maid is a musician create rock band. Band Maid writes and plays all their own music. The talent levels are worlds apart.

Miku (rhythm guitar & vocals) was working in a maid café while trying to get her music career off the ground when she came up with the idea for a band that would play cool rock music in maid outfits. She wanted the contrast between cute appearance and heavy sound. Fortunately, the emphasis was put on finding talented musicians for the band, rather than women who wanted to dress as maids. The only downside to that was that not all of them were thrilled with the costumes, so they've adapted over time.

Nice reaction thanks, but they are not really anything like Baby Metal. They play all their instruments and are a rock/hard rock band. Unlike the Baby Metal singers who have a backing band. They chose their outfits. Baby Metal were told what to sing and wear by their agency. That's not to say that it has not been successful for them.

People will have different faves when it comes to BM, they have so many stand-out songs that grab you instantly but many 'growers' as well, Currently mine is _Matchless GUM_ (which I think may be one of Miku's as well - she seems particularly heartfelt performing it). I only listen to the live recordings because unfortunately all of their studio output has been 'brickwalled' like cheap disposable pop and just sounds atrocious (you can't apply that kind of compression to live recordings, although the producers have tried with the latest one that this version of _Puzzle_ is from, Tokyo Garden Theatre early this year - it's the worst sounding of all the BM concert DVD/BRD's so far).
