I really liked the ending before you even mentioned The Who. I am going to steal that idea. Very interesting to hear you ease into the melody from an improve! Mulgrew Miller actually has a very energetic piano version of this that you can find on KZbin.

Could you substitute a major 6 in place of these major 7 chords? Or the major 6 b5 in place of the major 7 b5's?

Yes, although it would be more typical to add the 6th (along with a 9th) to the 7th chords, to make major 13th chords.

@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 Thanks! I am trying to think of this song in terms of the Barry Harris method. He could use the borrowing technique to make Maj7 chords, or would use either the Maj6 diminished scale (on the maj7) or the Min6 Diminished Scale (on the relative minor of the Maj7b5). I hope that makes sense to you! Your channel is very helpful.

The tension inherent in the Maj7th chords sounds better on this tune than Major 6ths. Major 6th chord substitutions tend to mellow out Major 7th chords particularly tonic chords, but this tune is all about urgency (pun unintended) and tension and those Maj7ths are absolutely essential to get inside the excitement this tune is supposed elicit from the listener.

I think you're right! I used to have it perfectly but found that I need to practice it again :)
