Seriously. Life. Savor. I mean.. Thank you so much. 2009 F150, wheel bearing failure.. Whining grinding the whole enchilada. Last time we replaced the bearing...... It was A NIGHTMARE !!!!!! Due to the fact it was stuck and we didn't have a puller.. Luckily we found a friend who let us borrow one.. He lived an hour away from us and our vehicle was the one being worked on. Needless to say it was tricky getting to him. Fast forward to now.. And what do ya know?? The left front wheel bearing is going out now... Outstanding. Soooo completely fearing the worst.. i used a dremel tool to cut a slice in the race and it came off easily. been doing this for 30 years. good tip.

Yupp I cut the X and used a straight 2lbs hammer and brute force did it I questioned this completely

Great info! Used it on an inner race stuck on a bike rear axle. I used a Dremel and a fibre cut off wheel Popped right off. Didn't even have to get close 👍

Another way to remove the inner bearing ring with risking damaging the hub, is to heat the ring with a propane torch, it will expand and fall off or slide off easily.

Shure tis a great tip as long as yur handy with the cut off wheel. After a night out on baile mor, the safety of the operator cannot be guaranteed. A sober warning should accompany this video as shaky lamha could spell disaster. Dhia is Muire dhuit agus slan leat o Eire go brea.

If it's the outer race that's stuck inside a housing, you hafta shrink it, & the trick is to run a bead of weld inside the race itself. When it cools it shrinks the race.

Can anybody please tell me what happens if you go too far and take a reasonable chunk out of the hub? My friend just used a oxy acetylene torch and burnt it in too much. He assures me it will be ok but im really nervous and seriously seriously pissed off. Id of just used a dremel here like the method stated. Do I need a new inner hub?? Is it ok? Is it only friction that holds these in the bearing so it could come loose? Help please 🙏

never tried that X . chisel to bearing is very dangerous for part of the cup breaking off of it and projet flying part to you and other worker.so i stop doing that metod.thanks for sharing

Just be careful doing this as the hardened chisel and bearing can shatter sending small bits of bearing/ chisel off at height speed, I’ve personally had them go into my wrist and had to use a strong magnet to pull it out

Yes great point, safety in these situations is very important, I'll often put up a shield right in front of where I am chiseling, as I am in a workshop I have other staff to protect as well. I use the wing protectors on top of a transmission jack a few inches away from where I am hitting, works really well for complete protection. Wearing the required PPE goes with all work and never worth taking any risk.

Why a X as opposed to a single cut?

The X cut creates an area that can also break away if it doesn't crack the bearing race, less surface area means it will move away easier, a secondary benefit of the X cut is it can be struck with the chisel in both directions if required. I used the single cut for a while but after trying this method I found it came off quicker so I never went back. Thanks for watching James

And for the outer race a bead of weld then cool with wet rag to cause shrinkage, but wear gloves for the steam and wear eye protection. For the inner race protect the hub/stub axle from welding splatter with a couple of layers of heavy duty tin foil.

You won't get it off then. When they are stuck on the hub you will need more than just a hammer and chisel. High heat is another method but even less people has access to that than a grinder. The use of special tools is very common to slide in behind and press out but again they can't grab them all and the tooling is even more involved. This is the best method that I know of. The tip is not about hub and bearing complete type, this is the quickest method I have used in getting all of these off, be it at home or in the workshop I always have access to a grinder to use. Most DIY users will have some sort of grinder they can apply this method using 👍👌
