I fully endorse what Sugandhi Raghavan(nee Akka) writes about having a daughter like Nandana. You have to be blessed as parents to be in that position. After mentioning his rebirths, he says that he finds himself in the hell of ‘me’ and ‘mine’. Attachments and ego are causes of accruing more Karma debt thus forcing us into further lives; if one knows that one can merge into Brahman, then life will seem like hell and attachments seen as ropes which tie us to this hell. Purandara Dasa then does a very clever thing, he says ‘Whatever I have done by mind, body and spirit, I offer to You’. If he offers to God all his actions, then doesn’t he also offer God all the Karma debt which arise from it? This is an acknowledgement that eventually the only way to escape this cycle of life and death is by Divine intervention. Whatever I do with my body speech , mind , senses , intellect) and soul , or with my innate natural tendencies , I do them all for others and offer/dedicate everything to Lord Narayana!

Kalyanavasantham a janyarāgam (derived scale) from the 21st melakarta scale Keeravani. It is a combination of the pentatonic scale Chandrakauns of Hindusthani music and the sampurna raga scale Keeravani. This ragam may mean Auspicious Spring It evokes a strong feeling of Bhakthi with a tinge of sadness. It is believed that though the ragam is having the prefix “ Kalyana “, it should not be sung/played in auspicious occasions like marriages. Is it also a superstition, like the ones for Varali, Ahiri etc? Kalyanavasantam is an asymmetric rāgam that does not contain rishabham or panchamam in the ascending scale. It is an audava-sampurna rāgam (or owdava rāgam, meaning pentatonic ascending scale). Aro : S G2 M1 D1 N3 S // Av : S N3 D1 P M1 G2 R2 S The notes used in this scale are shadjam, sadharana gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, shuddha dhaivatham and kakali nishadham in ascending scale, with panchamam and chathusruthi rishabham included in descending scale. Chandrakauns has a symmetric pentatonic scale, with the notes same as the ascending scale of Kalyanavasantham. Did you know that reincarnation is not Vedic thinking but comes somewhat afterwards? It starts getting mentioned in the Upanishads period (around 700 BC) but is most clearly stated later, in the Bhagavat Geeta (around 200 BC or later). The same thought is expressed by the sloka कायेन वाचा मनसेन्द्रियैर्वा बुध्यात्मना वा प्रकृतेः स्वभावात् | करोमि यद्यत् सकलं परस्मै नारायणायेति समर्पयामि ।।
