Thanks for this vid, it was pretty evidendly that a lot of background research has been done to put this one together. Personally, the biggest impact I have felt on imput delay was when changing the config file's inputdelay to 0.1 sec. After that I bought a new monitor which had 144hz(although it is only an isp) and I felt virtually no change. Then I reverted the config settings and it still felt like I was going all the way back, whitout no middleground despite changing from an very old 60hz tft to 144hz.

Thanks for all the work you put in, great video. Keep making them please! I conducted a similar experiment to see if I could determine the difference between vsync on and off and the result is I couldnt (on my 144fps monitor) which made me turn it on to eliminate tearing. Luckily Rocket League uses Triple Buffering and not Double Buffering which many people have had bad experiences with in older games and hence often recommend vsync off. Funnily when I first tested it, I thought I could tell the difference but it turned out to be placebo as the test wasnt done blind (I myself turned vsync on and off and then played). Repeating everything but without me seeing what vsync was set to gave the correct result.
@RocketScience8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Are you sure it's using triple buffering? Because the FPS are getting locked at the refreshrate and with Triple Buffering it's possible to go above unless Psyonix manually locks the FPS to the refreshrate. But either way, vsync is not as bad at 144Hz but I personally don't even notice tearing unless I'm looking for it.
@Sukigu8 жыл бұрын
Legit question, if there is no tearing (or you just don't notice it), why even bother turning V-sync on?
@RocketScience8 жыл бұрын
There is always tearing if you don't have VSync/GSync/Freesync. But yeah if you don't notice it, there is no reason to turn it on. All VSync does, is prevent tearing at the cost of input lag. GSync/Freesync have additonal benefits if you have less FPS than your monitor has Hz. Look at my reply to xXdimmitsarasXx and the link for more information on that.
@Sukigu8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I had already seen it, thanks for all the info! But it's possible that there isn't any tearing if your FPS and refresh rate manage to stay constant and equal all the time (or one multiple of the other, actually), isn't it?
@RocketScience8 жыл бұрын
Only if you get very lucky. Even if your FPS are the same as the refreshrate of the monitor a frame can finish rendering in the middle of the frame transmission which will cause the first part of the transmission to show the last frame and the second part to show the new frame. That's the tearing. If the FPS are perfectly synced, the tearline will always be in the same place. But it could be anywhere on the monitor and it would be very lucky if it was at the very bottom where the screen ends. In that case, yes, there would be no tearing.

I fist discovered input lag back in the early 90s on the Megadrive. I had a friend, who was almost identical in reaction times to myself. In every game we would regularly dead heat in input situations, particularly in fighting games, and sports games. To get around this, I spotted a flaw in his technique, he used his thumbs on the control pad. I did too, but I realised that there was a minuscule amount of input lag as he would move his thumb from one side of the d-pad to the other, or from one button to the other. I theorised that if I was to use my fingers instead of my thumbs, I could press one button on the pad, or one direction on the d-pad, and cover another button or direction on the d-pad, thus reducing the amount of input lag I had in games. Of course this was absolutely correct, but it took about a month or two of constant losing, before I finally taught myself the complex muscle memory that was required to do this. You see, to take advantage of my fingers, as opposed to using my thumbs, required that I had to not only play with the controller upside down (which caused much amusement), I also had to play games with the d-pad controls inverted. Back in the early 90s, inverting the y-axis was unheard of. Once I mastered this technique, my friend rarely beat me in any game. He used to accuse me of giving him a broken game pad, because he could not understand how I had managed to beat his reactions. I beat him, because I had reduced the input lag between myself and the game. To this day I still play with my PlayStation controller upside down. Do not confuse this with the claw technique, thumbs are never used. So how do I do this??? First of all, turn your PlayStation controller upside down in your hands. where the logo sticker is, place you thumbs from each side. Now whilst doing that, move your little fingers towards you slightly, so that they can rest in the space between the L and R buttons on their respective sides. At this point, you will have three fingers on your left hand covering the d-pad, and the left analogue stick, and thee fingers on the right side covering the face buttons and the right analogue stick. With intense twitch gameplay, such as FPSs, I will use my pointing finger and index finger on each hand to cover the analogue stick. With thumbs, you have to keep them continuously on the analogue stick, to move the stick around, but with fingers, I simply touch and tap constantly. You might think that this might be slower, but I can preload one direction, whilst moving in another direction. This technique is also inherently faster than using thumbs, because I am using my fingers as they were intended to be used. Thumbs are opposable, which means they were designed for grasp things, they were never meant to be used for fine control like fingers are. One other benefit of using fingers instead of thumbs is that you can achieve the same results with lower look sensitivities. I typically play on look sensitivity one, never needing to go any higher than that.

I locked my fps to 120 on my 60Hz monitor for maximum consistency. Do you recommend unlocking or locking to a higher value? Not sure about the benefits vs. drawbacks... Also I experienced how much input lag can fuck you up in this game when I first played on a friends PS4 (with some non-gaming TV). I wasn't able to hit a single ball the way I wanted to.
@RocketScience8 жыл бұрын
The best way would be a blind test. Get someone to change the values and if you can tell the difference set it to a higher value. If this is too much work I would just set it to 150. After that the "FeelsBackflipMan" differences become negligible. Once the differences are really small it isn't even worth it even if you're playing for money. If you increase your chance to win by 0.1% you're probably better off saving some energy.

@@Zarma3 The difference in the game play is huge. I'm playing much faster and it's so much easier to understand what is going on, when to challenge, etc. The psy net players seem to play slower now. The mechanical consistency has improved a lot, and now I'm able to learn how to speed flip. Because speed-flip felt practically impossible to do with the input lag caused by 30 fps. Air dribbling is way easier to do consistently, because of the game being more responsive. Same for power shots, double taps and flip-resets.

Shouldn't maximum input lag (time from the buttons is pressed to result being visible) actually be: + Time between frames x2, if controller`s polling rate is higher than FPS; otherwise it would be controller`s input lag rounded to a multiply of time between frames. + Time needed for monitor/TV to receive and show the frame (depends on the matrix, cable used and postprocessing) + Time the game takes to show the action triggered by the button, if action does not trigger right away Why would you multiply 17 by FOUR there? Game logic (including input processing) and frame generation are done within ONE 17ms period for stable 60 FPS. One frame delay (the x2 mentioned) might happen only when button was pressed at the moment between start of frame generation and input processing.

Hi! Great video! I got one question tho, i have an laptop that got a 120Hz monitor, how do i find out what fps is best to run the game at? I can have 250 fps while in training but when i play like 3v3 it goes down to lik 180-200 fps steady. Do you think its better to put it down to 144 fps then, cuz then the fps gonna be rock steady at 144 fps.
@RocketScience6 жыл бұрын
I currently have no objective data on 1 being truly better but I have a theory on how to test such an experiment some time in the future. In theory stable should be bit better in terms of input consistency. However, input lag goes down as frames go up so if that's the only thing you care about then you should use as high as possible. Either way, there is no real reason for you to use 144 (because you might as well go way higher if you go higher). Use 120 if your screen is 120Hz. The physics also run at a tickrate of 120 so if the framerate is perfectly stable then that part lines up too. Which does at the very least reduce the amount of unintended backflips that I talked about in the video.
@CloudyMcRowdy6 жыл бұрын
im not understanding. i have roughly 175ms reaction time. I use vsync, at 60fps. I also used my computer to test this. So what youre really saying is that I have a reaction time of less than 50ms? then explain how i am not noticing ANY input lag, whatsoever. Even with Vsync on, only at 60fps.
@jordanemmendorfer99947 жыл бұрын
So I have a bit of a technical question for you/anyone. I have been using my pc for rocket league and it's a beast with the least amount of input lag of any system I've used so far. Here are the specs. Intel quadcore i7 cpu. ASUS z97 mobo. Geforce GTX 970 GPU. 16gb RAM. No problems. However, I just bought a laptop that, I had thought had high enough specs to play the game and have it feel about the same. But I think I underestimated the quality of my pc. The laptop is a Dell inspiron 15 Gaming laptop. It has an intel i5 quadcore cpu. A Geforce GTX 950m GPU. And 8gb RAM. The game looks all right, although I can tell that it can't achieve as high a frame rate. The big thing for me is the input lag on the control. I use the same playstation ds3 controller with a usb cord on both setups. And I use the same scp driver to use the controller. But I would say that my laptop has about the same input lag as my friends ps4. It's pretty bad, and the whole point of my laptop was to play it over there, but not have to bring over my desktop rig. Are there things I can do at my given specs, or do I need to just pony up for a more expensive laptop? I'm looking for the same experience as far as input across both computers. And I was thinking that frame rate might not matter as much, but then I watched your vid.
@RocketScience7 жыл бұрын
The best way to test if FPS are what's causing the input lag difference is to find a way to get more FPS. You could try to lower all the graphic settings to their lowest and lower the resolution to like 640x480. That's of course not a long-term solution but if you can get significantly more FPS that way you can test if the input lag feels a lot better. If it does then it's just because you don't have enough FPS, if not then it has to be some other reason. Other than that, the screen is often the cause for high input lag but in a notebook, you can obviously not change it and if it's marketed as gaming then it shouldn't be a bad one. In terms of software, I would just make sure that you don't have some kind of "optimisation software". Some prioritise certain processes over others which can cause your inputs to have lower priority -> higher input lag. I've also heard that Windows 10 XBox DVR can cause input lag so that's something you can try to turn off.

That really depends on the TV. You can check out www.rtings.com/tv/tests/inputs/input-lag If your TV has 30 ms or more input lag in gaming mode it is most likely the biggest input lag factor of your setup. Most even just random monitors have 15 ms or less but there are a few office monitors or some intended for professional colour work that might have more. I don't think there is anything you can do. CPU usage spikes when people get demoed. Before I upgraded mine I also got a massive framespike whenever someone got demoed.

I can't handle the screen tearing with vsync off. it's insanely distracting and affects my visibility of the ball at times. What's the best way to deal with it?
@RocketScience7 жыл бұрын
I have no idea how I could offer you help with dealing with it. It's just a personal thing. If you can't handle it then you can play with Vsync. It's not unplayable if you're used to the input lag. If you want to reduce tearing you can try getting a monitor with a higher refreshrate/ a better computer to get more FPS. At 60FPS tearing is very noticeable because the difference between 2 frames is really big but at 240FPS the difference is only 1/4th of that. Having more FPS will result in more tear-lines but each of the lines will be a lot less noticeable. On my PC at 250FPS on a 144Hz I only see tearing if I look for it. At 144FPS it's definitely noticeable for me. None of this will ever result in something perfect so the only real solution is to get a Freesync/G-Sync monitor. They are able to sync the refreshrate to the GPU to prevent tearing with very little impact on input lag. If you don't want to buy anything and you have an nvidia GPU you can try turning on nvidia FastSync. It has almost no impact on input lag but it will make frame spacing uneven which can result in it looking stuttery.
@khelgarironfist33017 жыл бұрын
Exactly my issue. This is unplayable with huge tearing so the best way for me to reduce the tearing was that I locked the fps to 60 (got 60hz monitor) and enabled adaptive sync in nvidia control panel to reduce it. (fastsync didnt work as well) Works better than normal vsync both in case input lag and tearing but still not perfect. So a 144hz rig is a big plus in this game imo.

It doesnt matter with settings and fast pc when is somekind of odd bug. Its called heavy car bug. I got the same bug like many others in csgo and all other games. Its kind of you to post a good video but people with that bug can do nothing to input lag. All settings are tested without finding the reason for the bug. I hope everybody will wake up one day and see there is a serious problem.

I've heard that 59fps on a 60hz monitor will reduce input lag. Would 119 on a 60hz monitor also be better?
@RocketScience8 жыл бұрын
I don't know where you heard that but that doesn't make any sense. Unless there is some kind of bug in a games code that causes unnecessary input lag at 60FPS there is no way that could be true.
@mmmikem8 жыл бұрын
There are a few places online confirming this. Here's the top result off Google for you to check out. www.displaylag.com/reduce-input-lag-in-pc-games-the-definitive-guide/ I've read it multiple times in multiple places for games varying from fps to other sport games.
@RocketScience8 жыл бұрын
Ah. I think I know what they're talking about. They didn't specify it properly. That only applies to FreeSync or GSync monitors. They can have reduced input lag as long as they are running below their maximum refreshrate. So to answer your question: If you have a FreeSync/GSync monitor no, since 119 is above maximum refreshrate anyway it's pretty much going to make no difference compared to 120 FPS. If you have a regular monitor then lower FPS should never give any benefits. If you want me to explain why FreeSync/GSync monitors can have lower input lag at FPS below their max refreshrate, tell me. I just don't want to write the full explanation for no reason :P
@mmmikem6 жыл бұрын
Hey man, found myself binging your new episodes since this. I regret not subscribing. To conclude this, if I'm playing on a 60hz monitor, would I then get the lowest input lag by not using vsync and capping the framerate at 60fps?
@tacticaltaco74818 жыл бұрын
Could you test input lag after lowering graphics settings?
@RocketScience8 жыл бұрын
I've tested at alot of different graphic settings. They do not have a direct influence on input lag (unless you count VSync as a graphic setting). If your PC isn't powerful enough to keep constant 144FPS at Very High but it is able to do it at the lowest setting then you will have less input lag after lowering the graphics. But that is just a result of having more FPS (as I explained in the video). If you have constant 144FPS with either then it does not matter. Does that answer your question?
@tacticaltaco74818 жыл бұрын
Rocket Science Yeah that makes sense.

Hey, I recently crossfired 2 r9 270s but I am getting alot of input lag, less with a single one but i still feel it. I was thinking of buying an rx 480 8gb, do you think that will be good enough to run the game at 144hz with minimal input lag? Thankyou, and great video btw.
@RocketScience7 жыл бұрын
The rx480 is a strong card. It should easily handle the game at over 144FPS all the time. As for input lag I would check your drivers. Maybe Vsync is forced on. Otherwise it's hard to tell where it could be coming from. If it's the monitor then it would affect every game but maybe you don't find it as noticeable in other games? The only other thing I could think of is some programm messing with inputs and input devices causing a delay.
@sadeepthb73337 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I assume it can't be the monitor because I just bought an asus vg248qe. Hmm yeah I'm not sure, all I know is I get higher input lag the higher I cap my Hz and i'm getting more lag than ps4. Thanks

When I got Vsync off I have a ton of lagspikes, when I put it on I don't? wtf
@RocketScience7 жыл бұрын
Are you playing in Borderless mode or do you happen to have NVIDIA fast-sync enabled? Either of those has a different kind of VSync which is not "synced" to the game (it's pretty hard to explain without going into detail) and can cause stuttering. And enabling VSync will get rid of the stutters because it makes sure that the screen is synced with the game. In real Fullscreen mode (Borderless looks like Fullscreen but it's fake) and Fast-sync disabled (should be disabled unless you turned it on manually), the stutters shouldn't happen.
@Reddo027 жыл бұрын
Rocket Science How do I check if fast-sync is disabled? Thank you for the respons!

AMD doesn't have fast-sync. So that can't be the cause of your issues. I honestly have no idea then what it could be. I just knew that borderless mode has exactly the problem you were talking about.

@ethancarpenter2797 жыл бұрын
And I play on ps4...
@RocketScience7 жыл бұрын
Getting a gaming monitor instead of playing on a TV is usually a big difference that's worth it on PC and console. 3ms response time (I assume that's what they advertise) is good but not the best on the market. 1ms response time gaming monitors are not really more expensive these days and as I said in the video the input lag is also dependent on the input processing and not just the response time.

is there a 3rd party controller that has higher polling rate than ds4?
@RocketScience7 жыл бұрын
Not any that I'm aware of. The problem is that there aren't really any controllers made for specifically for PCs anymore. They are all made for console and therefore have to provide exactly the same data to the console that a regular controller would.

I'm sorry to hear that. The only thing I can recommend is to check if the graphic settings are all still the same. The update should only improve performance. I would write a message to Psyonix support telling them your exact PC specs (Graphics Card, Processor, Operating System), maybe they can find a solution.

What about GSync/Freesync with Vsync disabled
@RocketScience8 жыл бұрын
When you have GSync/Freesync on and you have less FPS than the monitor has Hz you're actually going to get lower input lag than everything off because with those technologies the monitor refreshes as soon as the frame is ready. If you're producing more FPS than your monitor can handle GSync/Freesync doesn't provide any advantage because the monitor is at best updating everytime it can anyways. In that case, it's not much better than Vsync because it's not going to display a new frame until it's fully finished to prevent tearing. I don't have a GSync monitor and haven't tested any of this myself. This site is a great resource: www.blurbusters.com/gsync/preview2/ (scroll down to where they are testing CounterStrike for the high FPS tests)
@boredbanana73248 жыл бұрын
Adaptive sync is not meant to be used in scenarios where you can reach 144hz and ULMB should be used instead. Let's say u have 72 frames in RL, adaptive sync now mirrors each of those frames that your GPU created and lines them in to reach 144 frames. It does not give you more frames than you have, only a perception that you do so. I tried limited my fps via RL to 141 and activated gsync and I can tell you it is not pleasant at all. Every 10-20 sec you can feel your monitor forces a sort of smoothes upon you for like 2 seconds which feels very unnatural and out of place, a bit like movies visualize an LSD trip - I'd reccomend you to turn gsync of whereever you can reach >120fps.
@Geroellgeraet8 жыл бұрын
You claim there is no added input lag by the game but youre testing at 1000fps. Maybe it is a framerate dependent effect that is only noticeable for lower fps ranges like

That's interesting. It is still in the file for me but changing it doesn't do anything anymore (watch Episode 13). I'm guesing it was only in my file because I haven't done a fresh install of the game in a while. Either way, I wouldn't recommend using it because it doesn't only reduce avg FPS which would be fine. It makes framerates way less stable.
@BTDubbzz6 жыл бұрын
I found out a few minutes after commenting that it is still in the file, but it wasn't showing up because I had RL running at the time. That's what I assume anyway Why isn't it working anymore? I guess I can just watch the new video lol. I will go back and change it to True though

That's why ps4 people cannot compete with PC guys. That's not about they are sux, it is about they got delayed much more than PC players, and have big disadvantage on 50/50s.

I have to agree. I started off playing RL on my ps4 and xbone. Then I put together a high end PC, and played RL on that instead. Went back to try it again on console days later, and I could definitely tell the difference and it was brutal.

@RocketScience7 жыл бұрын
The iPhone 5S can record 120FPS slow motion which means you need to count 8.33 ms per frame. iPhone 6 and higher record 240FPS unless you manually changed it in the settings so you'd need to count 4.17ms per frame there. The monitor itself is usually the biggest source of input lag if you get that many FPS. But even bad PC monitors usually don't have more than 40ms of input lag. TVs can be worse so if you're playing on one that would be a possible explanation. Otherwise, if you calculated the input lag correctly it's probably software related. In that case, I'd recommend trying to disable/uninstall any programs that have something to do with your inputs/record video in the background/any "optimizer" software.

The most important part of a PC for gaming is the graphics card. i7 as a Processor and 8GB of RAM are just fine. But I have no idea how good the game will run based on the information you gave me.
