I notice the change in input lag the most when doing the dribbling challenge 2. Small and constant adjustments give you a good idea of changes in controls so it's my go to test map. You might want to consider that.

*DESPERATE GAMER* Ive spent the majority of my gaming life with sub par levels of input lag. Im so grateful to have stumbled upon Rocket Science youtube channel, as he seems to be one of the few people who truly understand this whole input lag issue and what it means for the hardcore gamer. I play on a ps4 pro so i know there are limits compared to playing pc for getting low latency and high refresh rates, but I know there is a way to get better than what I have right now. Super excited to see the results of this. I assume that Microsoft and Sony have this type of research internally, but I also suspect it's under NDA as a trade secret. Please let us know if you end up publishing! This seems like a pretty solid balance between rigor and cost in the experimental design. You might know this already since you said it's for a Master's thesis, but for this kind of statistical exploration it's generally considered good practice to publish your expected p-values ahead of collecting data. That way you are discouraged from p-hacking for significance in the face of negative results.
@RocketScience4 жыл бұрын
I kinda doubt there is much more private research on this than public one. I'm definitely going to have to still discuss with my supervisor on which hypotheses and p-values we're going to include before we start the analysis. Right now, I'm collecting the submissions raw data in separate encrypted files and even if I check some to make sure there is nothing wrong with the data, I cannot really gain info from that without a computer calculating averages. So I can't p-hack with that, although public would of course be better for trust.

Yup, I'm gonna go ahead and do this right now. I use a Steam Controller on a 144hz monitor, as well as 3x GC, so it'll be interesting how much input lag actually makes a difference to my accuracy. Edit: Completed it... Oh lord, some of those felt AWFUL, especially for aerials. It just felt mushy and I missed damn near every shot in the worst lag ones, and couldn't even hit the redirect. A lot of 0-2s as well, since I'm used to having 40-90 ping, so I kinda "anticipate" my hits earlier than normal anyway. If possible, you should reach out to the Super Smash Bros Melee community. Input lag has been a discussion for years as advanced players can easily tell the difference between a CRT TV and a moden flat screen TV. Not sure exactly how many ms that adds, but it is very noticeable. Top players like Leffen would probably have a lot to say about it because they can notice the smallest changes in input delay. The best person to talk to might be Hax$ as he has many educational videos about the game and input delay. His youtube and real name is Aziz Al-Yami. They certainly think they can, those results are hard to test empirically since it's cumbersome to do double-blind between an LCD and a CRT. There's good reason to believe this is largely the placebo effect however, as there are lots of excellent Smash players who never played on a CRT given there age, and when they change over they don't notice much difference. There's similar research for playing on a projector and an LCD; even in cases where they have measurably identical input lag, the projector "feels slow" because we think that it must be slower.
@MrPurplePotatoes4 жыл бұрын
@@edbolton I think there might be some confusion, I'm taking about a CRT vs a generic new LED tv. Its not even a question that every experienced played can tell the difference, and keep in mind I'm talking about melee, not ultimate. This applies to projectors too. No serious player would ever play on a projector. Having said that, there is still much confusion about CRTs vs modern day gaming monitors. While they feel different (from the inherently different way the images are drawn on the screen), modern gaming monitors in combination with a modded version of the game ("faster melee") is just as "lagless" as CRTs. There is a TON of information and i'm skipping over a lot but hopefully that clears things up.

Very interesting I will participate. Note that randomizing the input lag will get interesting data for sure, but maybe a player can get used to consistently higher input lag and in the end perform as well as a player with a lower input lag. Good start. Just came back mid-test to tell you we need WAY more practice shots for this to be accurate. Like 100+ instead of 10. It took me a long time just to warm up to these shots, and I know it totally screws with the scores. I aborted the test and retried it until I was comfortable enough with the shots to do the full test with at least some accuracy, but keep in mind most people wouldn't. Also keep in mind you had more time to practice while literally making the shots, making "10" as a warmup more reasonable for you, but not us. It kind of assumes I'm consistent at the shots, but I wasn't until I practiced them around 120 times. Only then did I feel like the test became anywhere near accurate enough to complete, and this is coming from someone with ~2600 hours experience. As for the rank correlation thing, I only off-and-on touch ranked, so they're relatively low, but I can handle myself well in GC lobbies when playing with GC friends, and to be honest I've done more than one "Road to Bronze" in the past... Sometimes I'd get multiple tests with increased input lag back-to-back and I'd just adapt a bit and slightly forget what no input lag felt like, but then right after I'd get one that clearly had no input lag, making me slightly regret recent scalings, but what can you do about that, honestly.
@FinBoyXD4 жыл бұрын
I agree that the 10 shots went by really fast and after that wasnt really used to the shots yet. If you could just publish the training pack on its own we could play it normally like any training pack before we do the test. And I had that too when I had little input lag and it wasn't so noticable, until the next shot where there wasnt input lag. Comparing the two I could easily say that the previous one had input lag.

I was actually shocked how easily you can see the difference between 144Hz and 240Hz monitors in rocket league. I only own 144, but tried it with my friends pc. When the camera is panning side to side the background is little foggy looking in 144, but it stays sharp in 240. I dont think that gives a big advantage for gameplay though. From 60 to 144 is a huge difference though, and that has to have an impact on gameplay.

Watching this gave me an incredible idea... but I don't have the knowledge to do it. To make a similar 'testing' plugin for bakkesmod, but longer. It would have dribbling shots, different types of aerials, power shots, etc. Except it would create variances in the camera settings. (at the beginning you can 'lock in' one of the camera settings e.g. FOV will not change from 110 if you choose). After hundreds of shots, the plugin renders the data and gives you a rundown of what camera settings gave you the most accuracy/speed for which types of shots (Aerial, ground, flick, dribble, etc) and then gives you a 'recommended camera settings' based on the average. Every time you run the plugin, at the start you have checkboxes to 'lock in' certain settings, and a checkbox to 'parse previous testing data' so you could feasibly 'hone in' on what the exact best camera settings for you personally are. Tell me youre interested in this? :D

I just couldn't be precise or do solid air dribbles after hours of training, but when I started playing on PC my car felt like it was finally doing what I want it to and could not only air dribble but even hit some flip resets, which was impossible for me on Switch. Also the reaction time to catch a fast shot makes it easier. Going back now the car feels like a freaking brick on the Switch.

Also, no other platform can provide the clarity you get on PC. I just want to know, how do you do to make thats different input lag btween shoots train??, so i can test in my own way and try to put it lowest. by the way when u show that 2 split screen videos, i can tell you i play like left one. i play every day with 100+ms, thanks for this i can affirm now. Stall -100%. Fast recovery obviously impossible. Speed flips, diagonal flips and every flicks are hard to do this way. I cant 50/50. I lost every1. Literally. -All the kick off are broken to me. I hit, or my teammate hit the ball, and its shows for a sec one way, but it changes... u see the ball bouncing but inmediatly change direction. Every Single Game. -i have 300mb conection. Fastest conection here in my country. -i have years playing competitive, i know about inconsistency, or bad days. -aerials, of wall, of ceilin, of dribble are impossible. its like your car is inside of ice cream. -You know how to fly, you know how to hit, your hands too, but the game just dont do that, its weird. -I tested my ps4 controller, and its fine. -i played in consoles too. -the input lag in free train is lowest than ranks. -my car starts after then other teams car in kick offs. -the second flip its showed with delay 70% of time. -i played with high performance preset or high detailed and its the same for Delay, but no for FPS. the first one is more consistency. -The bumps are broken to me, i hit someone in supersonic and i blow up. Really haha. (gg ez quit rage haha) -The game change speed in the same rank match. its feel like you are playing in a far server hosting with no ping or lost pack at all. weird again. -Direction of the ball are broken to me. Things you can do to notice you having this problem. Go clips same mechanicalls in, workps, free train and ranked. Try to do mechs you mastered, depends your lvl. Try to play with other PC. Play every day with someone you can beat or has the same lvl. Test with high rank u can, put it yourself in speed mechs sitauations. Do the same trainning pack every day. Easy one. Some freeze ball to shot the net. One day if u cant even score maybe you have this. Try to keep record games and compare it. There's a very interesting study by nvidia about input lag with a scope more focused on FPS games, I highly suggest reading. It also reveals that higher refresh rate is better largely not because of more smoothness, but because of lower input lag for new information. It's titled "Latency of 30 ms Benefits First Person Targeting Tasks More Than Refresh Rate Above 60 Hz". Maybe that will provide useful information for your own research, and perhaps to everyone else reading this comment.

Having this as a non-experiment plugin for testing would be dope because it was fun to try to be accurate when I did it. Side note it does feel a bit weird when you switch recordings since it was either a different mic or positioned differently.

i have actually noticed that when i play with input lag (because i was streaming and my pc can't handle it very well) I was playing much more "solid" with less movement but more meaningful. Mostly a psychological event imo but it's interesting.

In my opinion, input lag is the most important factor in reaching high ranks, it's weird though none of the pros talk about it. Do they just plug and play? Use ds4 windows? Steam configuration? There's so many options out there to tweak with it.
@osquu4 жыл бұрын
Surely not most important. Game sense comes way first and right after mechanical skill. If 2 players with identical mechanical skill do a 1 vs 1, but player 1 has 50ms input lag, but better understanding of the game, player 1 will win. And if you mean higher ranks like champion and gc, input lag is still not a huge concern. It becomes a priority when you're top 100 and every other aspect of your game has been almost perfected. That's why pros don't talk about it, input lag is not the most important thing when it comes to being better.
@PeaceInSolitude4 жыл бұрын
@@osquu I don't disagree with with your point. What I meant was from a mechanical standpoint. Timing is everything in this game especially with micro adjustments for certain shots or passes which input lag plays a big factor. And at the high ranks, you get a bad touch or you're late on a challenge it's usually a goal for the opposing team. Milliseconds make all the difference in this game.
@osquu4 жыл бұрын
@@PeaceInSolitude Yes, but you can get used to lag. It's just that if you have more input lag than someone but better positioning, car control and reading of balls direction, it will more than compensate the input lag you have. If you have a lot of input lag, then it becomes a hurdle. It is more important to focus on other things than input lag if you don't have like 200ms of it. To reiterate when every other aspect of your game is almost perfected, then input lag becomes a bigger priority. It still isn't the focus point even if you're in rlcs.

Hi! Just wanted to let you know that there's a bug on the last screen (Hours and age). Both rows are blinking very fast and I could only type in one number before it switched to the next row, and it highlights the text that is already written so it all gets removed if I keep on typing. I kinda solved it by Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V and pasting my hours played really fast, but I had to leave the age at 0. Maybe it was just for me, but I just wanted to let you know. It will be very interesting to see the results and good luck with your masters! :)

Thank you for reporting that. I wonder if you've ever had this issue in BakkesMod before. I really don't see how this could happen when it doesn't happen for everyone else. What is your Windows version?
@zmurfarna4 жыл бұрын
@@RocketScience If no one else is reporting it, I guess it was just for me. I have never had any problems with bakkesmod before though, and it was only on the last screen with age and hours played. I am using Windows 10 with DS4 controller. It might just have been a one-time thing :)

@@zmurfarna Sounds an awful lot like your keyboard was just polling the TAB key. Did you shift-tab or alt-tab at any point? Sometimes steam locks your tab key input on, it's why sometimes after an alt-tab you'll try to sprint and pull up the shift-tab menu for seemingly no reason.

@Rocket Science i hope you read comments here tl;dr version: did you already do some research if the new epic rl client has less input lag than the steam client it feels more snappy for me, playing since 2015 on high elo with 5k hours in the game and i can 100% see a difference comparing them side by side Would be cool if you can take a look at this. Thanks in advance, nice channel fan for a long time!

Heard that once before so far. First, restart RL if you haven't already and try it. If it still doesn't work try opening the console (F6) and type "plugin load inputlagexperiment" + enter, then "togglemenu InputLagExperiment" (capitalization important). That should open the menu manually.
