As I recall, the “gyro saber” was a Rejected concept from the Force Unleashed video games (Emphasis on rejected) and I remember long before Star Wars Rebels introduced it as the Inquisitor lightsaber, it had already been repurposed as a “General Grievous Spinning Lightsaber toy” (I thought it was dumb back then too)

helicopter lightsabers... Ugg. I always preferred the fighting style of Obi and Vader in A New Hope. I feel that a weightless blade would perform better like that. No need to swing hard or fancy mechanized whirling, you just want quick movements like in fencing, no?

With a weightless blade It wouldn’t handle like a sword at all, a lot of sword technique is based on momentum but a lightsaber would be the same as holding the deactivated hilt. In new hope, I heard that George told them to act like the blades were really heavy, probably to slow them down so they could add the effects later or to not break the rotating reflecting blades when they were trying to do it that way. The in-universe explanation was that the containment fields made lightsabers handle erratically, the momentum and inertia was different than a solid object so they were tricky to move precisely which is why only force users could use them

I was watching Gundam Wing and there was a moment where someone had a metal cane with a small engine in it. It spun around and he glided down. It was stupid, but still less stupid that what they did with the lightsaber.

@@DanielMWJ No. the “engine” was pointing down to give lift I guess. I guess I could have worded it better. The engine is like a tiny jet engine on the tip pointing down where you would rest your hand. Think of a regular metal cane where the handle is is arched a little bit. Thinking about the design now, it’s pretty dangerous to have a small engine capable of having enough power to slowly glide down where you rest your hand if you use it as a cane.

So, the reason they never move the blades separately and always have them opposite to each other is because the blade emitters are not separate pieces moving around the ring. There's an outer ring, which the emitters are part of, which rotates around the inner ring with the handle.

5:25 I seem to recall someone making videos about controlling someone's else's lightsaber, including pressing buttons. Having extra buttons that an opposing force user can press is a massive liability. Without the spin function, the button gets pressed on and the plasma blade might clip your leg. With the spin function, that's taking your arm off with your own saber.

Also, the blade emitters are in the handle yet since the handle doesn't spin as that is the whole point of this design, how do the blades spin? Unless the Empire found a way to miniaturize lightsabers so much they fit in the circle part of the inquisitors sabers and the handle has no internal components, they would not work according to the lore.

1:53 that is the reason why I always thought they made it spin. In the lore they were captured jedi apprentices. They get their training from the field as far as I know. Many jedi were not trained in lighsaber to lightsaber combat. Normally it was lightsaber to Blaster training.

Problem was that at least some of them were temple guards, meaning that they were supposed to be at least somewhat competent, unless that was a bluff that the entire jedi order believed, all of the inquisition were Kight rank or higher, meaning that during their training post order 66, they apparently regressed to sub-padawan in ability

In a lot of the Legends canon the Mandolorians, during their war with the Jedi, did decide that the best weapon to use against them was shotguns. Not shotgun-blasters, just straight up, magnetically accelerated duralloy ball bearing buckshot. Because they figured out that when they used that the Jedi would still block anything they couldn't dodge but duralloy won't evaporate so they just end up with a bunch of molten metal flying at their face.

It could be as simple as, "When you use the force, you become anchored (in a way) in the universe. So from that location you can move things away, towards or around yourself." So technically you would be able to fly, but you'd have to move and rotate the planet you are on. I do not know if this is the actual description, but I have always assumed that you can't target yourself with the force.

What would have been an amazing idea for the Inquisitors would be to give them swords made of Cortosis. A material that is Lightsaber Resistant and is even capable of deactivating them. A cult like division of Jedi-Hunting Sith that use lightsabers that can negate the primary weapon of Jedi? That would have been so cool.

The helicopter ability doesn't work either from a physics standpoint. There's always an equal and opposite reaction. Because the blades are spinning one way, it would make the inquisitors spin the opposite way. To fix this you would either need a tail boom with propellers pushing against this rotation (hence why helicopters have tail booms) or you would need a 2nd set of counter-rotating blades.

The spinning sabre almost ended me, literally. I was watching the show and when I saw that for the first time I very nearly choked on my lunch! I was laughing that hard! A spinning blade, much like the first attempt to place an MG to fire through the prop arc on a WWI fighter, would allow more projectiles through the arc than would be hits/deflections by the blade. It seems the Disney writers have never heard of Roland Garros!!!

Star Wars Rebel was definitely made more cartoony and taken a little less serious and the spinning blades are an example of that. Especially the flying utility. I absolutely love Star Wars and Rebels is actually pretty good with some things I didn't like, but the flying lightsabers? I still roll my eyes every time I see them. It's an idea a kid would come up with.

Inquisiters are turned jedi, I thought. That wouldn't make them less skilled than a jedi, the grand Inquisitor was a temple guard, he would have to be more skilled I think. But all the others I know of are plebs so I think they would be less skilled as you said.

They are kind of bad because if it can be hit by a lightsaber and be disabled there's a problem. I saw some of Disney's rebels and one of the lightsabers clipped the inquisitors saber hilt and basically caused it to malfunction. I may be all gung-ho about the empire but that's a problem. I wanted you to react to Ray Stevenson's lightsaber. I've heard it's called the Great Sabre like a great sword.

Sorry but a spinning lightsaber I find completely a lazy way to fight. Where is the wielding skill and if they are low level skilled people why do they have such a dangerous weapon that probably would end up with the inquisitor killing himself by accident with his own weapon. The fact that a lesser skilled person is using a weapon like that is absolutely so stupid. I probably personally just keep moving out of the way and wait for the inquisitor to accidentally hurt themselves and probably won’t have to do much. Lol 😂

As far as I understand, the Inquisitor lightsabers were like this on purpose. They were meant to be flashy and intimidating, because (according to the explanation I found) most force users they went up against, were younglings and padawans, people who survived the Jedi purge/Order 66, but whose Training was incomplete, and who therefore were less competent in the arts of the Jedi, the use of the force and more easily impressed/overwhelmed by this.

Inquisitor Lightsabers are indeed DUMB! they are not just dumb, they are DELIBERATELY and MALICIOUSLY designed to be dumb! it is designed as a stupid gimmick meant to be a one-time only surprise to a half-trained light side force user (surviving jedi padawan). add a bit of dark side influence and the intimidation factor of a red spinning wheel of death >> the padawan gets dazed and easily killed by the inquisitor. plus it prevents the inquisitor to get strong enough to challenge Vader or Sidius.

If it spinns and you don't have to use your hand to attack wkth it, you can use the force with your other hand. Also, your opponent can't really stop the attack. But against a skilled opponent they are weak and they can't use force really, so they should just use 2 lightsabers...

Obi wan's difficulty with them was self Inflicted. Obi won was definitively by choice and an attempt to hide better out of practice with the jedi arts. And every time they got the better of him in any way, it was only a marginal success of a task, never winning it out right combat for that Vader needed to step in.

Blaster shotguns sound like such a great idea… you’d need to be a master of teutaminus or however it’s spelt in order not not get killed thinking soresu blaster blocks are gonna save you… But this is going way back in timelines isn’t it? We only see a little bit of teutaminus in the movies and maybe clone wars probably less than 5 times… think it’s mostly Yoda blocking force lightning… Haven’t seen people blocking lightsabers with it in ages though! Man helicopter swords are never gonna catch on if they can’t convince the people of the shadlands on the issue of spinning long blade safety issues/features… As soon as they claim the tech is safe enough I will know there is no hope left for our species probably… though I lost hope in our species long before even last set of rigged elections… : D really is the 2020s isn’t it?!
