@Gp2 Engine Thank you for your words of wisdom there, Gp2 Engine. Bernie was the man who persuaded Balestre to axe Group B - because it was putting F1 in the shade. But I got that from a book, so I wouldn't expect you to know about it. The book is Called Group B. It's by John Davenport. John Davenport used to be the head of British Leyland/Austin Rover's motorsport division, in the '80s. So he was there on the ground during Group B, running their rally team.

@Gp2 Engine I've never heard of the film. It sounds like fiction. The book, however, is factual. So I'll stick to the facts, thanks.

@Gp2 Engine The problem for Balestre, was that Bernie didn't like the popularity of Group B rallying, and as such, Bernie was at Balestre all the time. Phoning, faxing, turning up at events & complaining to him, about Group B. On and on until the combination of accidents, plus Bernie, persuaded Balestre to axe it.Even though there was an agreement that Group B couldn't be axed until 1990 at the earliest.

Ah, the eighties, 600+ horse power group b rally cars and 1500 horsepower f1 cars. The race drivers of today are accomplished athletes but races of today are very safe. The kind of death defying courage displayed by 80s drivers deserves a special kind of respect. Those where the days.

Yeah, check out the vintage superbike racing, Eddie Lawson, Freddie Spencer on high HP open class engines making 150HP with crap suspension and skinny tires hanging it all out. Or the Isle of Man TT on the modern hyperbikes flat out on streets with buildings inches away doing 200MPH...now thats insane. I really dont... these cars are accessible with 1 out of 3 counties in socal having tracks, most people that race are average dudes. I would rate driving one of these well above a privateer type rally car. You'd have to see in person. But I don't particularly like spectating unless a friend or relative is competing.

BLOODY MARVELLOUS! Right - who's got the coffee and sandwiches? A quick snack in the car, then we've got an hour and four minutes to get to the water-splash on the next stage. Saw this (and other Group B cars) live at the Swedish Rally as a kid in the mid-80's. Plowing through snow and ice in the darkness - pure magic! The Quattro has the most recognizable sound in any form of motorsport, a joyus choir of whistles and dragons hidden under that bonnet. It's true that the S1 wasen't dominant in the B-era, it was nose heavy and prone to understeer. Unlike the T16, S4 and RS200 it wasen't built from scratch as a Group-B car. It basicly a shortened A2. But! The Quattro revolutionized rallying with it's 4WD-system. It's the original beast and hasen't lost any of it's charm and mystic.

This kind of excitement is lacking in today's rallying and Formula 1. More power and more speed, please FIA !!
@j.keranen78009 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's true. WorldRallyCross series is very exciting and they visited Finland this summer but unfortunately I wasn't able to go and see it...

***** But the cars today are BORING....the speed isn't important here, the sounds, the cars etc. is what is important.

Toni There should be both. Drivers as well as Factory Competition. And factory Competition should be completely deregulated and crazy.
@buckorooster9 жыл бұрын
Toni And the fact that they did this 30 years ago where safety wasn't as important, because we all know to drive a Group B car like that when they have 450-550whp and weigh as less as 890kg, you need serious balls and skill.

Seen these beasts many times in the RAC during the 1980’s , you cannot put into words what they were like when seen and heard in the flesh. The things were alive , they almost had individual characters and they all seemed to put out different unbelievable noises . RIP group B gone but never forgotten.

Thats actually the boost blow off valve you can hear. It prevents excess boost pressure destroying the engine.
@zachogdahl2107 жыл бұрын
+Dellacondan in the case of what your hearing that flutter is the air bouncing off of the closed throttle and getting chopped up by the turbo
@bryengoheen55757 жыл бұрын
nah man that the BOV(blow-off valve). when the throttle body closes from high rpm/high boost situation the pressure that builds between the turbo and throttle body to the point where it'll burst intercooler hose or even worse bend the throttle blade... and then the engine just runs away. this just release's the pressure in that situation. the audi BOV does sound like reversion(what you are reffering to) but i assure you it is a BOV. reversion is something common to here on diesel as a BOV is not necessary to prevent engine damage, and unlike gas engine diesel do not care how lean they are, rich is what kills em, opposite of gas engine.

+Bryen Goheen - Couldnt have said it better myself,you know your shit.
@mvp4lithuania7 жыл бұрын
I don't get. Do you claim that the flutter sound is BOV? Because everywhere else I've heard this sound people say it's when there's no BOV and the pressure comes back to the turbine and the turbine blades fight it. When there IS BOV, the sound is like a sneeze.
