The Sony SSCS5 speakers scale well. If you use them with higher end gear, they sound surprisingly good. I have a some fairly high-end gear that I have collected over the years. Mostly Cary Audio, Conrad Johnson and Rogue. I bought the SSCS5 speakers to use in the bedroom paired with an old Creek integrated amp I had kicking around the garage and connected it to my Alexa. After running them for 40 or 40 hours they were pretty well broken in and sounded great for $110.00. I was curious how they would sound with my Cary Rocket 88R and Conrad Johnson Classic Preamplifier. Wow...is all I can say. Love the channel! Keep it up!

Last week for my birthday, my daughter bought me a Aiyima D05. I has fiber, coax, and USB inputs and RCA inputs. I wanted it for my PC sound system. I love it. It is $149 on Amazon now. Excellent "cheap-seats" list. I bought the Sony STR-DH190 (during peak-COVID) as the nucleus of a second, smaller 'fi for my upstairs workspace/diabolical lair, and it's only grown on me the longer I've used it: seriously solid performance, ridiculously versatile and convenient (running vinyl, CD, tape, FM and streaming via phone and laptop), and comes with, IMO, one of the best-designed remotes I've seen in years. And, speaking of Sony, while it's beyond the stated budget of your list, I'd like to give an Honorable Mention to the SSCS5's floor-standing big sister, the SSCS3: these are good enough to hold court in my main system downstairs: also purchased at roughly the same time as the receiver, for the cool holiday sale price of $200 the *pair* . I got the Sony speakers and the Fosi amplifier. They sound great together on my desk. I discovered the acapella group Fairfield Four, with These Bones. The vocals sound fantastic on my setup. I also bought some Guns N Roses cd's. They still sounded very good. I do not feel to upgrade just yet. And I have just listened to 100.000euro speakers on a show.

Planning to complete my desktop audio setup (Arya Stealth + FiiO R7) with the RB42. I'm still a bit undecided on the amp since I'm planning to get Schiit Vali3 for my headphones to try how the tube sounds so I'd like to get the Schiit Rekkr next to it for the speakers but on the paper it's a bit underpowered for the RB42. But since it's a nearfield application, maybe it's ok? If not I'll go with something from Fosi maybe.

The Micca RB42's are amazing little speakers. When I bought them I was surprised how small they were and how big their sound was. When you play music on them you'd never guess so much sound could come from such a tiny speaker. Definitely worth the price.

Hey thank you for the straight forwards thingy way of reviewing. On your advice. And I fell into your video. I wasn't looking for anything. But I bought 2 pair of Sony SS-CS5's. For in-between a new from scratch system. Their not lazy. One pair for rear ch of 5.1 theater. The other for stereo overall reference post mastering thru a believe it or not Pioneer VSX-520 I have to say. And I caught ur vid on crossover upgrade. My share worth noting. I have a very old pair in mint condition of aiwa sx-n3500/3550/510G 40w 6 ohm bookshelf cabinets that give more aliveness and depth. ha. I had a pair of speakers no one has spoken about. I've been looking for them and zero? Nothing. Stereo floor cabinets 1970-71 ( Infinity Positive One ) You haven't lived till you've heard them thru the classic JBL SA 660 solid state amp. with s basic old school Girard turntable. What ever record played. How ever mastered from Sinatra to David Bromberg , Weather Report, James Gang, War, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Dark side of the moon, Chicago. ha. you were blown out of your soul. No kidding. Ha. I haven't heard anything again like that special by accident combination I bought on a whim as a demonstrator amp. from a speciality hi fi house I wandered into on a rainy day in 1970 Yes all the old school stuff had the spot on hair raising bellows thingy going on. Now..? I still have my JBL amp. I keep it anti-static packed- looking for those re-creates of the Infinity Positive One's ... any knowledge? TY.

@9:59 SMSL Su-1 Returning the SMSL SU-1 here, it was bought from amazon from the same link. I wanted to upgrade from the PS100. Maybe its the one i got, the connectors are really loose in sense what you plug in simply falls out again. Optical in nearly not clicking in at all just brushing the cable unplugs it, RCA-connectors also really loose. Sound quality: Line-out is too "loud". Sound quality feels like downgrade, which can be result of the line-out sending too much power into the amp which the amp "does not like". Estatics: the indicator-LED is weirdly super bright which is irritating. Maybe i got a faulty one? For now i am back on the PS100 which has none of the above issue's in my case. And getting my 79 bucks back.

I have an ancient pair of Fisher ST-828s that I just can't let go of. I bought them in 1986 for $99 each, which at that time was nearly a full days pay. I know they are not well reviewed and they tend to be boomy (I cannot put them directly on the floor, having a basement), but there is something to be said for a 15" woofer that can rattle my neighbors windows. Until they die (I'm closing in on 60, so they may outlast me) I refuse to replace them.

My friends used to laugh at me for spending "so" much on my audio set up. I have scc5 speakers, the soney amp you mentioned and a 10in 100w powered soney amp. So to me $350 for a home audio set up seems reasonable. I later got a dell optiplex 7050 sff and a hifi dac for streaming. No complaints here.

I think there should be a special mention for the Swan Oasis 140. Its currently sold out unfortunately, but I got them for $140 and I definitely enjoy listening to them over the Sony SSCS5. The Swans have far smoother and less fatiguing highs and the bass is decent on a desktop (though a sub is still recommended). I can't listen to the Sonys near-field without some way of cutting their treble, either through tone controls or EQ.

The fun thing is that I've come across many of what used to be top of the line CD players from past years always between $15-$25. Looking at CD transport prices just makes me chuckle.

Ordered the neumi speakers funny but every time I tell my friend about many great reviews he throws stuff at me. I did see a couple ppl switched from the micas to the neumi. I have learned there is such a thing as burn in. Not always but definetly sometimes. I'll leave music on low volume when gone as much as I can and at least a couple times after maybe 2 weeks speaker tonality even response has very much improved. . edIfir speakers are in need of long burn in. I've been using a Android box to a USB digital to audio converter the past 2 years. I've always thought it sounded great. It must have been skipping the clocker. You should do a review on an Android box with USB pro audio player. Cheap and fun! I don't recommend them for too much else though

I have the q150s and they really do sound good but are fragile. One of my drivers got deformed after 3 years and Kef is telling me that i physically damaged my speaker. So much for Kefs reputation.

Been using the smsl dac against my 20yo denon hdcd player. Mostly a marginal change. Would be great with a computer. It did bring some dull sounding cds to life; other cds seemed very close to the 20 yo denon hdcd player Burr brown dac. Only a marginal difference. I just question how long any of the cheap China crap will last in the long run. There is a thing called The Test of Time that nobody talks about. You might be better off buying products that stand the test of time like a 20 yo Denon or Yamaha everyday player that still plays like new.

I'm not alone on this. a whole lot of peers miss the old coffee table sized speaker cabinets and that sound only found in them. What the heck happened? You can't tell me the sound wasn't spot on in many? Everything is either tall and narrow or bookshelf? Anyway who has 50 thousand dollars for a system that sounds half as good as an 100 thousand dollar system. That doesn't come close to one with 300 thousand dollar cabinets? I've heard very costly rigs playing familiar content. Their polish was still above the full fledged reproductions of old school rigs. I've heard costing fractions less. And I get it.

Can somebody please help me to understand! Complete newbie in the Hi-Fi arena. I am starting to build a setup. I want to get a streamer to connect to my fathers old Amp. Was going to get the WiiM Pro and connect to the SMSL SU1 as recommended. However what I don't get is the SMSL uses the AKM AK4493S DAC which is the exact same DAC that the WiiM Pro Plus uses. So why would you not just get that instead of both the WiiM pro and external Dac? I'm probably missing something obvious. Thanks for the help :)

Sony book shelf speakers are amazing. Got them with the fosi amp. Only thing I don't like about the amp is you have to remember to turn the volume off when you power it on. When the light is red it sends crazy noise through the speakers. Can't be good. Any thing to prevent without turning volume down?

I'd like to see more up to date class H amps. out there.. I love the rail catcher.. DACs to me are a waste of time.. If clocking errors occure than a DAC can actually degrade the sound quality.. Just make sure you have a high quality digital source for sound amplification.. I've tried a few DACs and I was not impressed.. Maybe it's my age..lol

Careful using a DAC as a preamp unless it has an actual analog audio volume control. Digital volume controls are horrible! Think of how they work. A full volume signal would have all bits turned on from the most significant bit to the least. 8, 16, 24, 32 bits.... so let's say that at peak volume, all 16 bits are ones, you want it half the volume. A digital volume control has not choice but to stop using the most significant bit. IOW your 16 bit system become 8 bits. Using only the remaining half of the bits. If you want a quarter volume control level, you are using 4 bits. IOW if you have your volume control set around 9 oclock. Some of the better ones use VCA, voltage controlled amplifier. The gain of the output stage is controlled by changing the voltage range it operates in. Thus you still get all 16 bits of resolution but across a lower peak voltage range. Problem is changing the voltage of an amp circuit changes it's operational characteristics. IOW it will sound different at each different voltage. Your sound will change with volume. Simple passive analog potentiometers or variable attenuator bridges are far better.
