The way I count the notes is 1,2,1,2,3, etc. but that's not how I count the time. Later in the video I count what feels like 6/8 to me but then managed to wrap my head around counting it in 9/4, though I still think it's awkward. Like I say, I'm not a music theory guy. I never had the opportunity to go much deeper than basic theory so any knowledge I have on more advanced theory is an educated guess. Maybe I'll learn some theory on stream one of these nights lmao. I'm sitting in my living room counting it out and although I'm still a bit confused on the 7/8 thing, I see that by counting 6, you only get part of the way through the phrase. I'm definitely gonna have to take a deeper dive into time signatures. I'm obviously way off lmao

@@keyofweird The beginning is in 9/4 but it's easier to understand in 18/8. The crashes you were counting on are really just constant dotted qtr notes. Bass drum is playing 16th note patterns while the synth and later highhat plays constant eight notes. The underlying rhythm is based on 220 bpm eighth notes and that's why the song even starts with the synths playing steady eighths with Matt on the highhat

@@keyofweird Sorry I don't think there's a lot out there explaining complex rhythms or theory on how to write for drums, or I might just not know about them. If you want to find some complex rhythms you could always look at pro drumline music to get practice reading and understanding them like kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJOneoOehNmGq68 Rhythm theory wise is just a lot of math. All complex rhythms can be broken down into simpler terms.
