Atarashii Gakko No Leaders (New School Leaders or sometimes just New School) were formed in 2015 by the Japanese music agency Asobisytem. Mizyu (the oldest member) had already worked with Asobisystem as a back up dancer to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and they brought in Rin, Kanon and Suzuka to join her. They have explicitly said that they do not consider themselves an idol group and they made an early decision to avoid the usual revealing costumes and trite song themes. They do all their own choreography and seem to have a lot of artistic autonomy. This might have happened because they were not initially successful and got very little funding and were eventually dropped by their Japanese record label; they were sort of forgotten until 2020 when they did a demo for the US company 88Rising who took them on and have worked with them to break into international markets. They have just released a new album called "AG! calling", and finised their first World Tour playing in 25 cities in N.America, Europe and Asia. In "Tokyo Calling" AG are singing about the difficulties of living in modern Japan and how it can seem pointless and without meaning. They use imagery from old Japanese superhero and monster movies and cast themselves as superheros to motivate people to break out of their rut and move forward. AG! formed in 2015. They struggled to find an audience for years before finally breaking out in Japan in 2023 with their performance of Otonablue on The First Take. Musically they are all over the place, but always worth listening to.

Atarashii means "new" and Gakko means "school", so AG! is literally "new school" and they consider themselves the "anti-idols" of the J-Pop scene. Since signing with 88rising, they have been pushing their sounds globally much harder. And like the previous commenter mentioned, their First Take performance is chef's kiss. Be sure to check out "Pineapple Kryptonite" MV, that song was written and produced by former Beastie Boys' producer "Money Mark" (Mark Nishita) -- it's wild. Another globally marketed Japanese group that would be right up your alley would be f5ve. They are the former members of J-Pop girl-group Happiness, who have teamed up with producer BloodPop (fka Blood Diamonds, who worked with Grimes, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Le Sserafim and many others) .

ATARASHII GAKKO! has been around since 2015 and blew up in the last year with performances at Coachella and on Kimmel. They were about to get dumped by their label when 88rising picked them up and everything changed. They just wrapped up a big world tour. They spent time in the states before that cutting some tracks with Money Mark, who worked with the Beastie Boys. They call themselves Japan’s youth representatives, hence the serafuku. They make their own choreo. Their performances are absolutely lit. Look up their Coachella performance of NAINAINAI.

Welcome to the AG rabbit hole! 😊 Do scour their extensive and eclectic discography. You will not be disappointed. For Tokyo Calling, I love how the song starts out with a sound-the-alarm vibe, and transforms into a call for unity towards the end. From something totally negative to something totally positive. Musically, the change can be seen from the shift from a minor to major harmony towards the end of the song. Pure genius. Plus the choreography is killer. I also love how it's a great nod to London Calling by The Clash, both musically and lyrically. For more Gakko goodness, I suggest you check out their First Take performance of their song Otonablue. If you want to see the most of their personality, I recommend "Otona Blue" the First Take version. A bit more of a standard J-pop song, but as with anything they do, not standard.

AG! is the most (or one of the most) eclectic, musically diverse, and fun groups in Japan. Calling them J-pop is shallow, so far, I have seen them doing Pop, Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop, Rap, Alternative, Ska, Disco, and their last collaboration was with a hard metal group. The are trained dancers and create their own choreographies (which a central part of their act), and they have unlocked Charisma level 100. You will do yourself a favor if you go into this rabbit hole. I can suggest Seishun wo kirisaki hado, Fly high, and Pinaple kriptonite to start with. You can also check their collaboration with legendary Japanese artists Sheena Ringo, and Maximum the hormone.

Love your reactions! As a fellow exol I would love to watch these: Exodus reaction (and also watch the path code teasers before you start. The concept is phenomenal and I could link some info about it that makes it even crazier! It’s the album that has el dorado, and call me baby as title!) Freal luv chanyeol x Tinashe x far east movement Lay lit Electric kiss (watch a performance! The choreo is insane it’s one of their hardest and my fav Japanese song of theirs!) Another interesting one is when LD noise (producers who have worked with exo) did a breakdown of forever with all the “hidden vocals” and harmonisation! It’s my fave song and it makes me love it even more seeing all the depth! Of course, their award performances are iconic like mama 2015, melon 2016/7, and golden disk 2018 where they were yelling to prove they’re not lip syncing. 😭😭😍 I discovered you from baekhyun pineapple slice reaction! Exo really revolutioned lore in kpop and take it much further! Like when their songs get released, it all coincides with solar eclipses!
