For example, I got 66 points(if you do perfectly, the total points are 120)on the math exam. This is almost average score among successful examinees. I think a big part of these types of questions, as with a lot of math questions, is just understanding the question and the wording of it. Understanding the "lingo", being able to visualise it, and knowing what they want you to do, is critical. For example in Q1, "two shared points" could send your brain into a spiral if you can't visualise exactly what they mean. Like, is it two points from the equation that are the same point on the graph? Or two points on the curve with the same y value? Something like this can be terrifying for somebody who doesn't understand it, but for somebody who does understand it it can be kind of thrilling as all the pieces come together even as they're just reading the question. It's like you have to take several bits of very condensed information like this, know what they all mean, and mix them all together in your head at the same time and understand them, before even beginning to think about figuring out how to go about answering the question. I think this is why a lot of people think they're bad at maths, they see something like this and don't even know where to begin, even though they might theoretically know how to solve it if it was explained to them properly/visually.

@@iamdanyboy1 Yea, I've often looked at practice questions and been stumped, only to look at the solution afterwards and realise that I knew how to do it but I just didn't disentangle the information in the question correctly. It's kind of like when you're learning a language, you can understand somebody talking slowly, but if they talk really quickly, or with a heavy accent then you get lost.

STEP II and III were easily the hardest exams I took in my life (harder than my PhD quals), given how poorly the UK school system prepared us for that leap. Particularly as some of the questions were heavily proof-based, without many intermediate guiding questions.

Honestly these problems aren't that bad since school is supposed to be about thinking. But most schools in the western world including Japan are notorious for rote instruction. In the US these kinds of questions do tend to turn up on the GRE.

Difficulty depends on how they study in school. If they often do such problems, what seems hard to students from other countries might be ok for them. The International Mathematical Olympiad is the only place where you can compare the results of different learning methods

As for question 4, my approach was going for induction and hoping that the parts relate to each other (they do): Part 1 is probably the easiest bit. If we do modular arithmetic mod 4, we get K=1 mod 4 or K=3 mod 4. In any case, K^2=K*L=1 mod 4, so from AK=BL mod 4 we get A=AK^2=BLK=B mod 4. For Part 2 and 3 I used induction wrt. b. In the base case, we have b=1, a>b arbitrary. In this case, (4a+1)C(4b+1)=(4a+1)(4a)(4a-1)(4a-2)(4a-3)/120=(4a+1)(4a-1)(2a-1)(4a-3)/15*a. At least one of the terms 4a+1,4a-1,4a-3 is divisible by 3, so (4a+1)(4a-1)(2a-1)(4a-3)/3 is an integer, which is further odd because every factor is odd (and positive because a>1). So, we can choose K=5, L=(4a+1)(4a-1)(2a-1)(4a-3)/3 and get KA=5*(4a+1)(4a-1)(2a-1)(4a-3)/15*a=(4a+1)(4a-1)(2a-1)(4a-3)/3*a=L*a=L*B (aC1=a). For part 3, we get that K=1 mod 4 and if a is odd (i.e. a-b is divisible by 2), we have (2a-1)=4k+1, so L=(4a+1)(4a-1)(2a-1)(4a-3)/3=1*3*1*1/3=1 mod 4, which by Part 1 implies A=B mod 4. Now, we do the step from (a,b) to (a+1,b+1) (Note that we get all pairs (a,b) with a>b>1 that way). Writing down the definition of the binomial coefficient we have (4(a+1)+1)C(4(b+1)+1)=(4a+5)(4a+4)(4a+3)(4a+2)(4a+1)!/((4b+5)(4b+4)(4b+3)(4b+2)(4b+1)!*(4a+5-4b-5)!)=(4a+5)(4a+4)(4a+3)(4a+2)/((4b+5)(4b+4)(4b+3)(4b+2))*(4a+1)C(4b+1). After factoring, we can shorten to (4(a+1)+1)C(4(b+1)+1)=(4a+1)C(4b+1)*(a+1)/(b+1)*[(4a+5)(4a+3)(2a+1)/((4b+5)(4b+3)(2b+1))]. OTOH, (a+1)C(b+1)=(a+1)/(b+1)*(aCb). By the induction hypothesis, we have odd positive integers K,L with K=L mod 4 and K((4a+1)C(4b+1))=L(aCb). Further, if a-b is divisible by 2, we have a=2k+c, b=2l+c, so K'=K*(4b+5)(4b+3)*(4l+2c+1)=K*3*(2c+1)=(Induction) L*3*(2c+1)=...=L' mod 4, so we can still apply (1) to get (4a+5)C(4b+5)=(a+1)C(b+1) mod 4. Part 4 is an application of 3): We have 2021=4*505+1 and 37=4*9+1. Since both 505 and 9 are odd, we can use (3) to get 2021C37 =505C9 mod 4. Now, 505=4*126+1, 9=4*2+1, and since 2 and 126 are both even, we get 505C9=126C2 mod 4. But now, 126C2=126*125/2=63*125=3*1=3 mod 4.

Well, to be fair, there are mostly two forms of "very hard math" testings could take: those skewed toward a lot of memory based work (like these Japanese & Chinese ones), requiring tons and tons of well established mathematical problems and practices.... OR... those used by the "Putnam" test, in the US, where the median score is ZERO or ONE point out of a possible 120 points. Take your pick. Only a few people like Terence Tao, Newton, Gauss et al would do well on the Putnam test; so I guess for the rest of humanity, even those who are good enough at math to rank in the "Top 1" percentile... I think they'd rather go with those Japanese, Indian, and Chinese math. You may or may not produce a lot of Fields Medal winners out of those Indian, Chinese, and Japanese math tests; but you WILL produce a lot of very top quality engineers, professors of mathematics, physicists, and so on...

Mathematical ability IS willpower. Fermat's Last Theorem took Andrew Wiles to spend "six years in near-total secrecy". But, U Tokyo entrance exam is just a preselection for the most mathematically talented (expected to solve all easily), with also accepting bunch of others less talented for math but ok for other stuff like Engineering. I am those less talented who failed once and got in in the second trial.

I'm Japanese. As you may know, Tokyo University is the most difficult to enroll in. I even never seen the exam because before reading it I think I cannot absolutely understand what the question means. Even if I prepear for 3 years, I cannot pass the entrance exam. I took this exact test and passed Todai 5 months ago. This math test was actually the hardest in the past 20+ years I've solved. When taking it, I cursed my bad luck and was almost crying over the test and my sheet was half blank when time's up. I remember writing down what I couldn't even understand myself. (Not only the answer, but you're supposed to write the whole process in your sheet.) After I passed, it turned out my score was 42 out of 120, which was relatively lower to pass but pretty much ok for me. The average math score of passers was 60 or so. I did well enough in other subjects to recover.

As an Asian student, personally the most difficult part is that you have to read and understand the questions in English. I'm a sudent of University of Tokyo. After watching this video, you might think that Japanese highschools teach amazingly difficult problem solving. But actually, 99% of Japanese highschools don't teach anythig close to this level. If you want to go to Todai, unless you happen to be in the left 1% you are almost forced to go to some kind of cram school or preparation school, which is of course not cheap at all.

Let's be honest, there are a lot of anime scenes about math exams in high schools, and if you pause and look at it, you might even spot stuff like integrals and matrices within those papers. That's pretty much how difficult math is in Japan (I guess?) Side Note: I personally think that Japan is a strong math country and is kinda underrated. There are some famous theorems named after Japanese mathematicians, such as the Yoneda Lemma, Nakayama's Lemma, or Tannaka's duality. There is also something called the Nagata ring and Japanese ring (as I randomly stumbled on in the Stack Project). But it looks like Japan is only "famous" within abstract algebra (as I don't know any theorem named after Japanese that's not in algebra)

I passed this exam recently. Like other people saying, this exam is not difficult if you prepare for it and you need to get 60% score to pass. That's why it isn't insane. But it is not well known even in Japan that this exam is far more difficult in 1990's than now and there are still truely insane entrance exam, for example, Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Just in case the number of questions for the given time is scaring people out, you only need to get about half the mark to pass (of course it depends on other people’s scores, as well as your score in other subjects, but usually half is enough). This is if you get almost all correct in the center exam (which count for 1/5 of the overall entrance exam score in case of Tokyo University), but is also what most students applying for Tokyo university get.

Question 3 and 6 tend to be more difficult than the others, so average students who take this exam solve questions 1, 2, 4, 5 first and then solve 3 and 6. By the way, the average score on this test for those who got into the faculty of medicine was 71.8%.

it’s disappointing a lot to brag about the difficulty of college entrance exams in one’s own country. exams are aimed primarily for measuring the maturity of knowledge in the specific group of students. the way colleges assess the applicants vary just like the way they teach math significantly diverse. you could, at least, get awarded the fields medal or Abel prize without taking your country’s difficult college entrance exams bc there’s no such correlation between the success in competitive math and research math

When I was in grade school back in the 1970s, we took a standardized test every year called the CTBS. I recognize three of these questions from the sixth grade math section. Back in those days, you were just supposed to know this stuff.

Hi! Im a student of Maths at the University of Santiago de Compostela. I don't have specially good grades. In my opinion, this exam is understandable and doable, with the adequate preparation and correct teaching of the maths implicated, and yes, at an undergraduate level. It's still difficult, long, and it requires the proper teaching of maths, unlike we have here at Spanish high schools. If you are interested, I cant send you an e-mail detailing how I think each exercise can be solved. I haven't done them through, but you said that you had trouble understanding some of the questions, and I think I have a pretty good idea of how to solve each by just lookinh at the questions. The very long exercise of the integral I think it can be solved by an algorirhmic method so the difficulty is not in inventing anything particulary clever but rather not making any mistakes on the long and tedious process. The questions related to analysis of functions I think can be solved with the few fundamental results that are taught in undergraduate.

It is really difficult university entrance exam. I can do some of it but to get in you need outstanding mark. So all 6 questions for 2.5 hours...it has to be weight loss sweaty experience ending with migraine.

This all comes down to the supply vs demand of spots available at the university and funding available. If less funding, less supply, and they would make the exam more difficult so that less students relative to the number applying would get in. On the other hand, if a program has more demand, they will also make the exam more difficult. For programs where there is less demand, you might be able to still get in with lower marks.

You should check Turkey’s 2021 university entrance exam math questions!!!! Its called YKS(TYT/AYT) and its pretty tough especially this years exam was the one of the hardest

Helloo Tibbes! I'm from Brasil and we have two entrance exams that we consider the most difficult in Brasil. If possible, it would be interesting to make a video about the exam questions from Instituto Militar de Engenharia(IME) and the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA). These two exams are absurdly difficult for any high school student, and many take years to get a place at these institutions. TYY!

Q4 isn't that that tough TBH. 4. 1. can be solved by taking the two cases of K and L , 4n+ 1 / 4n'+1 or 4n+3/4n'+3. KA and LB must have the same remainder when divided by 4 ( since they are equal). 4.2. Existential proof. Just take a=2, b=1 and you will have A=1, B=63. No calculators required for this 4.3. The difference between the two terms should be divisible by 4. 4.4 The last two digits of the expression mod 4 is the remainder

One of the things that prepares students for those tests is the "cram school." Basically students spend a huge amount of after high-school and weekend time just preparing for the tests, for at least a couple of years. "Cram schools" are everywhere here; in fact Kit Kat candy is popular as a gift for entrance exams because it sounds like wordplay for "You'll definitely win (pass)!" Just practice test after practice test, with laser focus on getting into the college. I have heard from many (however I don't necessarily think University of Tokyo is this way) that the entrance exam is often the hardest part and once in, things gete quite a bit easier. I'm only secondhand information, but I do live here so my secondhand information comes from firsthand sources. :P

@@sachitvarshney1495 AP Calculus AB is way easier, it does not even require the calculation of complex integrals. However these questions are not actually that hard and I think the French university entrance exam has similar difficulty with this one.

Hi Toby. I enjoy your videos a lot. Especially the one in which you solve problems from exams in different parts of the world. Just a small suggestion. I guess, you should use plane white paper in stead of ruled paper. The reason being, first of all it's more professional. But more than that, in rules paper, drawings lile graph and lines may sometimes confuse the people whom you are demonstrating. In our times, our teachers actually used to scold us for using ruled pages. They taught us using plane white paper. It improved our handwriting of course, but yeah, taught us space Management in exams. In most exams, like this you are given a limited sheet of paper to do rough work and demonstrate answers. That is also sometimes very critical of these exams..

I do want to enter the university of Tokyo and I'm studying for entrance exam next March. Most students who can enter Todai solve more than 60% question of math. Now, mathematics test is the most bothering subject for me. That's too difficult.

Yes, it depends on what level of university ur trying to get in, but Japanese universities’ entrance exam is probs one of the hardest in the world overall. So when we look at for example SAT or ACT math problems it looks easy af
