Nice. But where are all the cows? My guess is all those trophy shots with victorious anglers hoisting their fish are taking their toll. Big fish should not be taken out of the water! At least those small fish are more resilient . Thank you for modeling good release practices though!

Hi John, great video as usual, thanks . I see you adjusting your drag several times when Blackfishing , do you sock down your drag to start and back off once the fish is hooked. I generally set my drag before fishing and maybe once in awhile I adjust as I go. You seem to do it a lot more especially on bigger fish. Can you explain. Also , I have a dark matter conventional rod that I love for Tog but I was curious on what your thoughts were about the dark matter rod that you used for the Seabass. Would you ever consider that rod for blackfish with a jig or is it too heavy. Just curious on your thoughts on it Thanks.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 8 ай бұрын
I always fish with a tight drag, and back down if needed. The tight, almost locked, drag provides the best hooksets and stopping power. With the exception of albies and probably tuna, there is always time to back down on the drag if needed. Also, when fighting a fish, I feel it makes no sense to use the same drag setting at the end of a battle when the fish is tired but may run at a difficult angle under the boat as opposed to the initial hookset when the fish needs to be pulled from structure. This video shows my blackfish jigging rod, bit.ly/3oWVAPu, the ML version. The M version would be OK for tog jigging, but the ML is a better choice and was designed with tog jigging in mind. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHm7g6mtd9Z7qdU

Good one John....buuut....PFD....under the shirt maybe? You're alone, on the ocean/bay. Plus, should have a trailing rope(poly to float) so you can grab hold and get back to the boat. This applies to EVERYONE ! BE SAFE. Have fun. Be courteous to all.

Regarding the gut and 16’ aluminum’s. My first “real” boat in 1993 was a 1981 16’ StarCraft side console. It was 72” wide. My friend and I gutted the boat, redid the floors and console, built a casting platform on the deck, and outfitted her with a new evinrude 48hp spl. Yes, we travelled through the gut to Plum island on many occasions. However, you HAD to pay attention to the weather, your marine radio, etc. Some great memories crossing the gut in that boat. Sometimes really hairy ones. Lol. I wouldn’t fish the guy with that boat, but pass through and fish the eastern end of plum island? Absolutely! 13:33
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 8 ай бұрын
I had exactly that Starcraft, two boats ago. This ones deeper and wider by a lot. I would have been scared to be in the gut with the other one. We got a lot of good use from it in the Sound though.

@@JohnSkinnerFishing lol wow amazing! Yea that boat was perfect in the bay, and the sound. It was tricky to launch at Truman’s. So we would usually launch from G pond or Hallocks, then whip around the point to the sound side.

Will check your fishing the bucktail book BUT also commenting ~ is there a ratio you follow to determine the bucktail weight for the 3-way? I understand staying vertical/reducing scope with appropriate lead sinker, but having trouble determining the general weight for the bucktail. I assume this varies depending on boat speed in the drift vs speed of water moving at lure depth? Any general guidance appreciated. Consulting the book now too.

1.25 ounces for the bucktail is about standard. All weight adjustments are made with the sinker.

Nice work John, and the right choice, I was in the eastern sound today, I should have gone there. I find the top view much more viewer friendly. And I learn much more when your on your boat. Question, why did you chose to go with the three way rig as opposed to using the flutter spoon, I saw you were rigged up with one ? Thanks.
@rudyraymundo4554
@rudyraymundo4554 8 ай бұрын
John can correct me if I’m wrong, but I use flutter spoons a slot and I enjoy them, but I find they tend to scope away too much in fast current like that. The 3-way swivel with heavy sinker keeps his jig vertical.

@@rudyraymundo4554 thanks, I know that, that’s why he uses those heavy Tsunami spoons over there, Im just wondering if that was dictated by a specific condition ? I noticed that he seems to always be fishing the ebbing tide over there ? Thanks.
