I didn’t like eel for the longest time. Then I realized it was because in the US, where I live, it wasn’t usually cooked properly. It was never like other fish…much more rubbery and tasted of dirty pond water. (Even saltwater eel). Then I had it at a sushi ya that was run by an older Japanese man…in a small coastal town of the Atlantic Ocean. It was exquisite!! 😮 Now I’ll ask how it’s prepared or I’ll make it myself. Of course you can’t get eel at any American restaurant I’ve ever been to….probably best that way. 😂

That Unagi and Egg over Rice, i have no doubt it's delicious but i am annoyed by how difficult it is to eat just for the sake of making it look nice. Put another plate under the bowl so that customers can use the plate to put the unagi and egg aside.

Oh man that unagi looks awesome. I am so keen to get back to Osaka and try it. The best unagi we've had so far was in Narita - I think it is a local specialty. But this unagi looks next level, and so many different ways to try it. Great find, thanks guys!

Haven't had fried or grilled eel in decades. Here in the Netherlands eel is nearly extinct through overfishing of eel larvae by Spanish and Chinese fishing vessels just outside Dutch territorial waters. This has caused the price to explode (obviously) when it's available at all.

On another note: the best unagi I’ve had was actually in Maryland (USA). It was local and very fresh. It was at a sushi ya that my son and I used to frequent. They made me this wonderful maki sushi with an entire eel grilled in unagi sauce lying atop the roll and cut into pieces like that!!! And the tail curled down around the end piece…with the fin so crispy you could eat that too!!! I have to say…it was wonderful and I was amazed to find something that good in the US, especially in a rather small town..nowhere near a metropolis. Unfortunately they are no longer in business. We looked them up while traveling that way this past summer and they didn’t survive the Covid lockdowns. 😢 Edit: *on the off chance anyone has ever been there. It was called Dadamibang and was located in Salisbury, Maryland*

DELICIOUS!!!!! the unagi gyudon photo next to the unagi tamago don looks amazing as well :) and so interesting to get the different parts of the unagi on a stick. The donburi is huge! I think I would be full with just the unagi and egg. In the Netherlands we love eating eel as well. It's called paling and it is usually smoked. But it has become so expensive because the numbers of this type of eel in the wild has been dropping. I remember as a child coming home from school for lunch and seeing a long package wrapped in newspaper. So exited because I knew my uncle had dropped by with some whole eel. Lunch would be that eating it straight of the bone (just like you would eat corn on the cob hahaha). Now I usually get fillets but it's just under 10 euros for about 100 grams.
@melissadunton35342 жыл бұрын
What a shame. It’s still a very affordable option in the US as most ppl here don’t or won’t eat eel. I think I like it that way…more for me! 😂😂😂
@NorthSea_1981 Жыл бұрын
It's exactly the same here in Northern Germany...eel was very traditional (normally smoked or cut in chunks, breaded and pan-fried), but now it has become extremely expensive over the past couple of years.
