The strangest one is the law that prohibits a child from playing pinball in South Carolina. They’re actually games of skill, not chance. I wonder who in South Carolina thought about such a law.
@Rwtheking3 жыл бұрын
The law exists probably because when most states made it Illegal because there where no Flippers on them yet in the early 1900s and were much more akin to actual gambling. Around the 70’s a lot of places made it legal because it was clearly a game of skill due to underground improvements to the mechanics of the machines while they were Illegal. It’s odd that it’s still Illegal there but it was far spread in the early to mid 20th century with Prohibition style raids being commonplace it machines were discovered being used or stored.

@@Rwtheking what?
@akira808state43 жыл бұрын
@@Rwtheking flippers were introduced in 1947, with Gottleib’s Humpty Dumpty, which added a skill element. It was thought that pinball was gambling, and so it was banned until 1976, when a man named Roger Sharpe proved that pinball was a game of skill, not chance. The ban was lifted after that. But yes, in some parts of the United States, there are still pinball bans. Here in Hawaii, it was illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to play pinball, which is no longer the case.

The law about controlling the weather reminded me of a strange phenomenon during the American Dust Bowl. While the South was suffering from terrible drought, dust storms, and the Great Depression, charlatans would travel the south promising poor farming regions they would summon rain “with science”. They would launch fireworks into the sky in a big public display, claiming they were seeding clouds or something of the sort. A lot of very vulnerable people were taken advantage of during their lowest point, and the charlatans pocketed the money and fled to the next town before the townsfolk could realize no rain was coming. I wonder if local municipalities passed similar anti-weather-control laws or ordinances in the wake of these con men. Source: Timothy Egan, “The Worst Hard Time.” It’s a great book and a quick and easy read.

That's on the people buying the food, not on the people selling it. Also, calorie counting is a debunked thing. No one actually knows how many calories are in any given sample of food without scientifically testing it, which destroys the food sample in the process. Hamburger A might be as close to Hamburger B as possible, and yet they may have wildly different calorie counts. The government doesn't need to be telling us what to buy. The one about pinball in South Carolina stems from the fact that back in the 70s, when the law was passed, pinball machines dispensed tickets to redeem for prizes, which included money. Because of that, numerous states passed laws making it illegal for children to play pinball, but then all but South Carolina repealed the laws when evidence was brought forth that pinball is a game of skill, unlike slots which are a game of chance, which is what gambling is based on. They also removed ticket dispensers from pinball machines and removed money from the prize counters of arcades.

0:32 this law makes sense if you think about it, skis can 40-60 miles downhill and they are long and thin. Also unlike cars their is nothing to protect you aside from a helmet. And children are allowed to ski unlike cars so you could hit a kid.

The weirdest law I have to follow is that I can't plow a field with an elephant. That's a very oddly specific law!

Tbh that law about conroling the weather kinda reminds me of that green dance powder stuff crocodile was using to make it rain in alubarna during the alabasta arc of one piece

4:27 Pinball on the same level of gambling? Definitely makes sense that it’s on this list. I bet they either never played or they always lost.

Gotta love how in Delaware it’s illegal to sell dog hair but it’s completely legal to own an AR15. ‘Merica!

Imagine being so analy retentive you regulate how fast ketchup runs. 😂 I'd really love to know if and where this is a weird law elsewhere in the world.

We could change the weather, if it’s a little cold for Charlie, drop him a big ol’ space heater… which is a nuclear ICBM.
