Hello Harald! I'm Vietnamese and I understand what happened. Those people were kind to you. You gave them 10 000VND for only one fruit, but they took the scale to weigh, because 10k VND was a little much for only one fruit and they wanted to weigh more fruites to give you the right amount of fruit, what you paid for. But when you said "no, no, only one", then that woman tried to give 5000VND back to you because you have took only one fruit. So they just wanted to sell the right thing with the right price.

I very cleared remember my first impression of the Vietnam countryside. This was in the Southern area about fifty kilometers north of Saigon. The literal foothills of the Central Highlands. From a small plane I viewed the area and looked at an area that was so “green” it actually hurt my eyes to view it for extended periods. Vegetation so lush and prolific it boggled the mind. Never had I seen such a fertile environment with so much promise for agricultural advancement! The rice fields were bountiful. The rubber plantations were extremely productive in this climate and other crops were producing record yields. Then war set in and pretty much destroyed all the bountiful and promising harvests. Green that hurt the eyes was soon replaced with bomb destruction, ever increasing military advances from all sides that halted crop propagation and an herbicide that literally destroyed the “green” in many areas overnight. I am thankful these fifty years later that those areas of Vietnam are finally turning green again though it is a shame that, in the interest of ideologies and war that it was interrupted in the first place. Such is the consequence of “man’s inhumanity to man”!
