El Morro National Monument near Grants, New Mexico was the next unit we visited along Route 66. For centuries, travelers lured here by the promise of a reliable water source, have left their names indelibly inscribed on the cliffs beneath a giant 875-room pueblo!
We hiked both the Inscription Trail and the Headland Trail which was quite unique with the path carved into the rock.
😄 Stick around for bloopers at the end of the video!

What a cool Park! That path - wow. I don't think the NPS would carve the rock these days anymore either. So you were walking on an historic anomaly.

Yup, that's true, nowadays probably just rock cairns would mark the route on rocky terrain.

If you like pesto, the seeds from the cones of the pinon trees can be used for that flavor. When I was a child in Arizona, I used to go with my Grandmother and Grandfather to pick the seeds.

It will take years and years! We don't want to just check off each place, we really want to explore each place and that takes time. Creating these videos and detailed blog posts also takes time.

Was Zuni a real thriving place back then? It sounds like a destination that the traveler was looking forward to. Ha! Those loud birds!

I think any place that had reliable water source in the days when travel was very slow was a thriving place.

Thanks for sharing. I’ve never been here. You raise two interesting points when are inscriptions historical and should be preserved and when are they graffiti? And changing management practices over time by the NPS. For example, when I was young there were rainbow trout in Emerald Lake in Lassen VNP. When I worked there I learned that the trout had been poisoned because they weren’t “natural” to that lake?

I think NPS is constantly learning how to best preserve the natural resources. Another example is fires in the Sierras, especially near sequoia trees. All fires used to be suppressed, but now natural fires from lightning are ok or they even make prescribed fires, because that actually promotes new growth of the sequoia trees.

The information in these videos is very well structured and very educational. By the way you can use the Seek app (by iNaturalist) to easily identify plants, trees and animals.

Thank you dragonshivu! I have the Seek app installed as well :) Often I will try multiple apps at the same time and see if they agree :)
