James, thank you for explaining Dolby Vision. I never realized (until recently) that I didn't have a Dolby Vision capable player, frankly I didn't know much about it. I have the one step lower Panasonic 4K UHD player in the UB-420, which has HDR 10 and HDR 10+. The UB820 is about twice as expensive, but if I upgrade I'll try to remember to use your link. I really appreciate all the information you provide.

2 thumbs up on this video and I fully agree with James' comment about the Panasonic UB820. This is an awesome 4K player. Previously I had the Sony 800M2. I switched to the Panasonic. I was amazed at the improvements. Startling better picture and better audio, plus discs that would freeze on the Sony ran perfectly every time on the Panasonic.

I always appreciate your thoroughness in your reviews. I agree that the extended editions are better especially The Abyss. I feel like the theatrical version of The Abyss is missing the whole point of the story. I also think these are 3 out of 4 of Cameron’s best movies. Terminator 2 is the other. The original Terminator is a very, very close 5th. I always agree about physical being better and every way. I have had many digital versions change and disappear altogether.

Great news T2 redo, T1 in 4K. Watch my movies on 120” screen with JVC4k projector which has excellent HDR tone mapping. JVC national rep told not to use Panasonic player tone mapping since JVC is better. Thanks for your research into new restoration projects. Watching True Lies tonite.

I know you mentioned how the Aliens one is basically Aliens 2.0 in that it won't look or feel the same due to the AI restoration process. Compared to other films that have gotten a 4K release from the same time period of these, would you say that look wise they look like they came from that time period, or that due to the new AI restoration process Cameron used it feels weird/different to other films of that time period? For me I like to have the films look like they came from the time period they originally were released in, and I guess my big concern is these won't look or feel like 80's/90's films anymore due to this method he used to restore them trying to make them look more modern and clean. I hope that made sense and if you have a moment, I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks again for all your hard work, I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into these reviews.

the thing is, even if the AI restoration is getting better and better and can do some great work, I would still rather see an actual 4K scan of the original camera negatives whenever possible. But yeah, the AI being able to open up more possibilities of more releases is still a very good thing.

I watched an hour+ long video earlier of a guy going on and on about how these were bad, and was actively boycotting these releases(!). Like, how are you going to talk smack about these without watching these first? And including some screen shots would’ve been nice, even if he had to borrow them from other people. Pleased that the BD discs are region free as we, in the UK, have had to import The Abyss due to BBFC rulings. I have the Panasonic UMP9000 which is just brilliant. I had the 820 which was visually a very good machine.

The Panasonic UB820 is a fantastic player. But I’ve spent way too much money on my PLEX Server to justify a UB820 for myself. So I play all my full quality MKV movie files with an NVidia Shield TV Pro and get everything the disc has to offer as well, equal to the UB820. And man these movies look great on my Sony A95K QDOLED. So glad to have these on 4K now, even with the few discrepancies you mentioned. Thanks again James 😎👍.

I also use the Panasonic ub 820. As a home theater enthusiast, a dedicated player that does dolbyvision is a must. Plus it has great tone mapping features. I have a ps5 and a series X , but they are vastly inferior 4k blu ray players and don’t support Dolby vision. If you have a projector you can get away with the ub 420 that doesn’t support Dolby vision, as you won’t need it for most projectors

Awesome follow up! Thank you for answering my question about the Aliens digital version comparison. I thought I was the only one who was interested, but glad I wasn't. Now that I can see there is a difference. It's an excuse to go back and watch it again properly. I would hope it would finally silence those who clearly judged the Digital version only and crapped all over it. I wish I still had my dolby Atmos set up. Moving from a home with a Home theater to an Apartment I retired the surround system a few years back. There hasn't been really any good movies lately to justify setting it up. Although, I may be tempted to set it up again just to hear Aliens the way it's meant to be heard. I see an eviction notice coming soon!! Anyways, I subbed to your channel. Keep up the good work!

You don’t have to, only the first two are available in 4k uhd. The first one by Ridley Scott has the same 5.1 dts ma audio from the blu ray, no upgrade, if that’s important to you

@@darealestwon For one thing, the 4 Alien Blu-rays I have now are in a nice skinny package, I don't need to always replace everything that works for a better picture or sound (I'd go broke), and I recently bought some nice 12 AWG cables for my front 3 speakers to replace the mis-matched Monster-and-generic speaker wire that I had, plus an E.T. 4K, which I only had on DVD....gotta start saving some money instead of spending it.

I think it's odd when the digital version sounds significantly worse than the UHD Blue Ray, but it does happen. The digital version of the Fugitibe and The Abyss does not suffer from that though, it least sound wise. They both sound pritty big even in digital. I would say the only movies I strictly wach on UHD Blue Ray, are DTSX mixes, The Thing, Independence day, Jurassic Parck, Howard The Duck, exmachina and 8 Mile. It's a shame an atmos alternative is not available for thoughs, and I also noticed certain older movies with new atmos mixes are not offered on digital as well. The OG Childs Play movies were definitely a huge sound upgrade as well as the classic Halloween movies wich Scream Factory also gave new atmos mixes to.

The digital version on Vudu looks great. I guess not all streaming presentations are equal. I wasn't happy with the the True Lies image but you can see pores in close ups and some fine detail.

If anybody reading this is having UHD disc video noise glitches or skipping with their Panasonic UB820 player and it’s NOT the disc’s fault, it’s worth considering cleaning the laser lens with isopropyl alcohol and microfiber cloth. I posted more detailed info elsewhere on YT via comments section. This saved me from buying a new player after trying tons of troubleshooting ( 3+ year old unit )

The rat didn’t drown. So it’s a non issue. I went out of my way and bought Knight Rider from Turbine for the overall quality yes, but also and especially for the unedited, original episodes. I’m a Christian and think some things in movies are unnecessary such as excessive vulgarity and sex scenes, but I hate and abhor politically and socially motivated editing as well.

I really want to say how much I admire the tremendous effort you’ve put into the review of these Cameron movies. This is not a task to take on lightly. I also want to say that, as a UK based collector, I fully agree with your view on censorship. As I recall, the rat scene was in the original cinema release, then removed for the early home entertainment version and only reappeared when the extended cut became available and attitudes became more relaxed. I have the US laserdisc release complete with rat. Since leaving the EU, I feel we are starting to see an increasing retrograde move to a more controlled society …. But that rant doesn’t belong on your channel 🤐 Ps: having seen Dune Part 2 at the IMAX this week, I am really looking forward to that becoming available on the 4k format 😛

Not complaining but Cameron did use a bit of DNR. The original release was very grainy and this release is clearly not as grainy. He’s been known to be unhappy with the film’s grain as far back as the Laserdisc, where he applied an early form of DNR. I’d be really interested in hearing about how this release was made, how the AI was used, and how much DNR was applied. Did he completely DNR and then use AI to add some grain back? Nevertheless I’m excited for this and will definitely buy it.

I actually wouldn't be too opposed to having a enhanced cut of the original terminator that "fixes" some of the bad cgi it had on that film.

Isn't it pathetic that you have to clean brand new 4K discs? I feel like I'm back in the 80s having to blow out game cartridges to get them to play. In all seriousness, I have noticed that the Panasonic players are much more sensitive to fingerprints/residue than the others, but they still outperform the others in just about every other category.

The BBFC are stupid at times, In my personal opinion it should be abolished, because as a massive film fan myself I like to watch films censorship free. So importing is def the way to go. I will import the abyss but atm il wait until all the madness calms down and then buy it. As I'm from the uk myself aliens dosent get released until end of April so il happy wait for that. I'm not bothered about true lies, yeah it's a good film but for me not one of watxh multiple times over and over again, so il bu it when it comes down to a cheap price.

Are folks still complaining about film grain? It appears in older films, that appeared in theaters, on screens the size of small buildings, because that was the technology at the time. We are now watching physical media, in our homes, on smaller screens. Reducing the--distracting--grain is designed to improve the experience. And, the technology has improved. If folks want grain, then just watch an older format: VHS, LD, DVD, Blu-Ray. Problem solved.

I couldn’t agree with you more! The technology has advanced. It’s a lot of the older people who feel nostalgic about film grain because it reminds them of the good time in their life when they enjoyed movies, they want to replicate the experience , not improve upon it.

It’s not really about that, it’s that when you remove the grain, you remove the detail. For example, Peter Jackson removed the grain from LotR and everyone looks like they’re made out of wax. There are no fine details, such as skin pores or clothing textures. The whole point of 4K is to see more detail in the movie. So if you’re removing that detail, what’s the point of even releasing it in 4K?

I respect your opinion and perspective; but I prefer my films, when released in 4K, to approach the way I first saw them in the theater. What Cameron has done here is put his own Lucas spin on these films. It would be like colorizing classic black and white films. As much as it pains me to do so, I will just have to pass on these purchases.

I have the 4k steelbook of terminator 2 and i still haven't even opened it to watch it because of the bad reviews of the waxy look it has. So knowing we are getting the first film in 4k and the 2nd film all being done in 4k with a new transfer to them i will buy them but i still wont be opening my crap 4k version probably end up in the trash where trash belongs.
