Mold and mildew near handwashing sinks, flies near a vat of pickles and ants traveling down a wall were just a few of the violations inspectors found at a Virginia plant tied to the largest listeria outbreak in more than a decade. The CDC now says at least nine people have died and dozens have been hospitalized. CBS News' Elaine Quijano has more.

I dealt with them for 50 years. Drivers were mostly OK. The company put them through hell also. Snobby company, thinks they're God's gift to the food World dictating to store owners what they "must do" for them to keep serving us. BUT keep in mind, that this is also the pubics fault for demanding Boars Head products from store owners. All that aside, I'm glad they're finally getting their comeuppance. Now let's see them play the modest role, which no doubt is coming. Don't fall for it.

They have resident USDA inspectors at plants that produce more than a small volume. Obviously the USDA inspector and FSIS weren't doing their jobs. There is supposed to be weekly listeria, product and environmental testing, with historical results logged. I worked at a production facility for 17 years. I was the head of lab and testing. Many local food processing plants as well as delis, deli chains, grocery stores, restaurants get a heads up from local health depts before their inspections. This has been going on for a very long time and still does. The health dept employees get perks for doing this, free meals and dinners, game tickets, gifts, cash, trips to gentlemen's clubs, vacations. And the public pays the price. I know this because I worked in grocery industry almost 30 years, my ex husband worked for local health dept for 25 years. In my experience this took place from 1995-2010 in Jefferson County AL at Winn Dixie, Tyson Foods, some local restaurants and country clubs. Some of Jefferson Country HD employees were involved in this and blackmail. If a food processing plant or restaurant refused to give them the perks, they automatically got bad scores.

@@monicarenee7949 My last response didn't go through, I don't think I hit send. About listeria, just imagine how many foods went unnoticed that had listeria.Over the years, millions. Average death rate maybe 200 people a year, so considering it mostly affects the elderly, pregnant and those with compromised immune systems, listeriosis won't do much damage. I had a major heart surgeon that worked in NYU that would come in our store every Sunday for a certain salmon( which was recalled). I still had it on the premises ready to ship back to Maine. When I told the doctor it was recalled due to Listeria, his exact words to me were "Please give it to me, I am not pregnant and my immune system is fine". This doctor was quite famous in NYC. The company that had more recalls than anyone believe it or not is Whole Foods. Colemans Beef which they handle had a few recalls but their whole body section had so many (witch oil).
