The thing that makes me uncomfortable about the scenes with Lawrence is that he was so compliant with the standard respectability politics of those situations. The code switching, changing of the music from hip-hop to jazz just moments before the taxing exchange with the police officer made me realize how the illusion of white supremacy is perpetuated due to the perception of ourselves and most importantly how they percieve us. Also, note how they edited that particular sequence; Lawrence, shook by the circumstances nervously reaches for his ID and his credit card falls onto the floor. Jump to the next scene, he realizes he has no money. His attempts to dissuade both the cashier and the transactors from his embarrassment by acting cute. When the women, obviously pronounced in their "whiteness", proceed to say we will take care of it they lured him into their trap. "Dum-dum" is alluding to the fact that he was naieve enough to fall into the guilt/thirst trap that they were projecting onto him. They only wanted the thrill of being able to control him for his alleged "endowment" and when they got less than what they expected, they ditched his ass. It was predictable that he would be longing for Issa because his hoeing has not led to anything substanial. Also, it was pretty clear that the feelings he had for her had not been resolved. He needs to learn to confront his own needs/desires before he can commit to anyone else.
