Insecurity at the Off Grid Cabin - Doors, Firewood and an Outhouse

I finally install a front door on the cabin and explain whether it's the final product or not. I almost complete the outhouse, I add some more moss to the walls (chinking) and I cut and split a face-cord of red oak firewood. I cook three meals - venison stew, spanish frittata ( • Cabin Cookout: Breakfa... ) and sourdough grilled cheese.
In My Self Reflections, I talk about insecurity, shyness and the overcoming of it to lead a happy and successful life.
The off grid log cabin is starting to feel a little more like a home with operating doors and windows, a functional outhouse, a pile of firewood to heat the tiny home and the beginnings of a stone and wood plank floor to keep the cabin warm and dry under foot.
Winter is basically here - the weather fluctuates around the freezing temperature mark, with snow one day and rain the next. The clay and moss that I have stored in the cabin for chinking is frozen solid and it takes a hot fire in the wood stove to thaw it out.

An observation. It's just the old Army medic in me, I hope you'll take this advice...When chopping wood I HIGHLY recommend using eye protection when doing so. I talked with the leaders of our ladies group at church about first aid and CPR training on Sunday before I saw this post. They thought it was a good idea. Hope to set up a program soon. Building our own first aid kits or boxes sounds good also.

I think your observation is of great importance, me and my family have lived in isolated regions in south america for years. a "SILLY" ACCIDENT AS THIS ONE YOU MENTION, ( sorry 4 caps ). Imagine yourself caring a 3 y old son, mother, veterinarian working 30 miles away without cellphone coberture , any "sully " accident compromisses the safety of the whole group, because is not just you. Mi inglish isnt for sure the best , but I hope good enough to make my point clear. This guy should have thankyou a lot, about your comment, but he stayed silent. He's right. Im a retired RN. A friends husband was going to do just one more small thing to a wood project to finish for Christmas and didn't bother wearing his safety glasses. A small sliver of wood kicked up into his eye and within a short time he had to have a cornea transplant.

Watching you work is nothing short of orchestral. It's like watching a balarena dance. There is no fumbling or discord. You just glide through everything so smoothly and calculated. I find it absolutely hypnotising and therapeutic. I love all the little tricks you use like nailing a thin strip of wood on your boards and to hold them in place between panels. You just slip it in place and then nail it in place. Or the guide boards you use to put up your long boards. Simply brilliant!!!! Also, your camera shots are superb and you narrate your story of work beautifully!!!! Great camera angles and story telling and you don't even have to talk. I.e. you got up, found everything was frozen, had to go out to collect wood and then started your fire. And all without saying a word. I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!!!!!!!!!

We live in a world that is full of insecurity. I came from a military family that was traveling around the world. As a child I learned if you didn't speak and learn lessons, you din't have opportunities. The main reason most people are somewhat insecure is fear of failure. I came back to watch again. You remind me of my father, by the hard work and dedication. My father worked hard like that and I did my whole life. He raised 7 kids, but we all drifted apart. Sad, but is what it is. I raised 2 girls and have 2 grandaughters and 2 baby grandsons. I raised them alone because I devorced my husband and he took off and never came back. When he did, he still never helped me ever. He died a couple months ago, left nothing My children never had a father relationship and it is still so tough on them, even as they wept for it at his side when he passed. Anyway, I'm 59 now and still struggling, but my babies all are my life, and I have such great admiration for a hard working man. I miss my parents. They are with the lord. But I will see them again. Keep up the great job, and please watch out for the moose, and bears!♡♡♡

I've been "lurking" here for a while and would like to congratulate you on your drive and successes! I grew up in rural northern Maine with my grandfather as my primary father figure and mentor. We spent countless days camping, fishing, hunting, trapping, and working on his off-grid camp. Even though I couldn't think of a better way to spend time than to do it with my superhero grandfather (In my teenage years, time with him usually won out over partying with friends- they often wanted to hang with us!), I didn't quite understand how incredibly important those times were. Despite his absence now, I am still finding lessons that he taught me, either directly or by example, that make me who I am. What you are doing is important to so much more than your self reliance. It is formative- rippling to a huge circle- and will positively impact generations of your family long after you have gone! Keep passing that shit on, sir!

Tip: It's a bit late now I know, but you can utilize this technique on your next build God willing. Because you're not using screws, with play from various sources i.e. wind, wear, etc and/or settlement over time your nails will start to work loose, because of the way you're placing them (all parallel). When you're hammering nails in groups: Angle each one at a different direction from each other. As opposed to straight (90 degrees). For example hammer each nail at say 70 degrees from the surface, and point each nail at a different "trajectory", if you know what I mean? This will cause them to behave more like anchors, and will increase the lifespan of your projects significantly.... Or use screws. Use screws! Congrats on the build. It's beyond impressive. As for your philosophy on life and regrets: My momma told me what's for you wont pass you... And I believe her.

My wife and I had to go through the same thing - loss of our business in 2006, It has taken until today to recover - I suppose we have never actually "recovered" but we are okay and living on our homestead. Not as rustic as your place but we make and grow some of our food and love to do homemade meals, so much better. we cut firewood for heat, well for water, now if we can just get away from Ontario Hydro...one day we will.Great postings. Past memories......My grandmother had an outhouse. The family always wanted to upgrade and put indoor plumbing in for her to make her life easier but she wouldn't hear of it. She always enjoyed just watching when one of the sons came to her house to fix something. As a child, I couldn't understand why but watching you work, it is soothing and I feel like I'm part of the outdoors enjoying simple living. Grams gone now but I'll always have those special memories of her.

Some of the most important times in my life is remembering times with my son deer hunting, spending weeks on end in the woods in preparation for deer season, he so much loved spending time with me in the woods , he would come home from school, do his chores , homework and off to the woods we would go . He has three sons now and we take them on fishing trips , I see the joy in my grandsons eyes from going fishing , catch their first fish , the outdoors is a great thing for them and the memories we share ! I just stumbled on your KZbin channel, and am loving your videos. Listen, I'm not in the habit of making the remarks I'm about to make to a complete stranger on a digital platform. But I just read your description, and listened to your last audio commentary, and learned that you suffer both from insecurity and from shyness. I know that shyness has a genetic component, which research is proving can be incredibly strong, and no comment from a stranger is going to undo any insecurities you may have. That said, I'm likely old enough to be your mother (59), but let me tell you, you have an awful lot going for you! First, you're handsome as hell, fit, have a lovely voice and beautiful eyes. But your skills! Oh my gosh. I love the cabin you're building, and am so impressed with your precision and quiet, capable nature. To many people --men and women-- this type of personality is very appealing, as a friend and as a partner. I certainly don't know the rest of your life, and would never want to trivialize anything you feel you're struggling with --never. But, man, you're an impressive guy. (And cute as can be.) Ok, I'll take my blushing cheeks and shut up now. (Thanks for making the videos; they're fantastic and I'm hooked. :)

Not sure your age, but at 75 I still run a large trapline in Northern British Columbia. He wouldn't find it so easy if the temperature were -30 to -40 as around here. For one thing, I must split and stack around 2-3 cords of firewood in the summer to heat my 15 foot X 15 foot cabin during the winter when I don't have time to hunt for dry scraps of wood in 5 foot deep snow.
