How to Make & Install Floating Shelves in a Tiny House Rustic Kitchen, DIY Log Cabin, Macaroni

My Self Reliance

Күн бұрын

I carve wood dowels and cut pine planks from free wood to make and install floating shelves in the tiny house kitchen at the log cabin, another off grid, rustic DIY project. Using hand tools, I whittle pegs from ash firewood logs and hammer them into holes I drilled in the log walls and pine planks using a brace and bit. The holes are 5/8" and 4 inches deep on both ends. The pine planks are 2" thick, which I used an Alaskan chainsaw mill to cut from red pine logs that I cut down at my friend's property last spring.
At the beginning of the video, my dog, Cali, and I hike across the beaver meadow and down the frozen stream to gather balsam fir logs that Joe and I cut last March. I bring a couple of bundles back to the cabin to use for trimming the windows and the benches in the cabin. The remaining logs will be used to make chairs for the fireside as well as for building materials for the workshop, sugar shack, root cellar or woodshed. My wife films us in the meadow using a Mavic Pro drone and I film the ground level scenes with my 6D, Mark II.
Using hand tools, including a rip saw, a crosscut saw, hammer, brace and bits, axes, drawknife, planes and bushcraft knife, I fashion bulky trim for around the east window.
I have three meals in this video. The first is a beef soup that I made in the last video, which I eat for lunch while working on the rustic kitchen shelves. The second meal is macaroni and cheese, made with shredded aged cheddar and parmesan cheese with butter, flour and cream. On the side, I have fresh sourdough garlic bread, toasted on the woodstove. For breakfast the following morning, I make frittata with smoked salmon and sourdough toast. The egg dish includes, sweet and hot peppers, cheese, smoked sockeye salmon and tomato.
At the end of the video, I talk about how much time I'm spending making things more aesthetic rather than only functional. I want to surround myself with beauty and nature rather than rigid, hard surfaces.

Your sweet beautiful tempered and happy dog is a testamony to the wonderful man that you are. You truly give e hope that this world isnt filled with a hopeless strain of Human. Thankyou for giving mr a glimmer of hope. I lost my husband back in 2002, He was a great man ,a fire fighter by trade and a real get up and go type man ( like yourself),Since his passing I really was loosing faith that id ever find a man that would fit the type of lifestyle that we were building. When my brother showed my your videos ..You really gave me hope hat my husband wasnt the only one. thanks again for giving me hope that this world might not be lost to the concrete jungle and walmarts!!

A couple things that strike me. First, love the way you take care of your tools. A lot of us have forgotten that art and when something becomes dull we head out and buy a new one. Second, I love the sounds of your cabin home. How quiet it is at night; the sound of cooking or building, the fire crackling and nothing else, a snoring dog. Its a lovely vacation just to listen. Third, how we have come to believe that vacation or relaxation means being able to do nothing. For me vacation means finally getting to focus on doing the small artistic things I love and that is what you do. You are busy all day long in the most delicious way. That is true vacation. Building something; creating something. Better than a thousand hammocks in the sun.

Seriously, I've seen cooking shows, featuring seasoned chefs working in fully-equipped, state-of-the-art kitchens whose dishes didn't look(or taste, probably) anywhere near as amazing as some of the stuff I've watched you prepare in a log cabin that you BUILT COMPLETELY BY YOURSELF with nothing but hand tools! The cabin, by the way, looks to be coming along phenomenally. Keep being awesome! ;)

I'm so glad you don't put music on this, or put unnecessary narration in when you just show what you're doing. So many channels commit that mistake. It's as if they are insecure about the quality of their content. As if the audience needs to be constantly coddled. And the talks at the end are just great. What you're doing here is a true rarity.

I love watching how you do everything. I love that when you explain things you keep it simple and short and then you have these talks at the end and you go into how you feel about things and how you look at things. I think the viewer gets a real sense of the type of person you are down to your heart and soul. Not just your mind not just your hands not just your creativeness but how are you think and what you find beautiful and you actually have reasons why you feel that way. It kind of brings home the fact that how we are today is the culmination of everything that has come before. I love watching your creative process and making things truly beautiful and in keeping with the surroundings. I am watching this at the end of 2019 and I can honestly say that your homestead is becoming extraordinarily beautiful! Thank you for letting us share in all of it! :-) God bless!

Years ago when I was around 11 years old, my dad rented a duplex apartment in 1949/50... He lost everything in Dec 1947, when Mom passed - her illness and burial expenses took their home. I remember the way these apartments were built back then.. We were living in San Gabriel Valley, Southern California (Rosemead to be exact) when at that time the small surrounding cities, Pasadena, Temple City, Alhambra, etc., were just beginning to become populated with their small businesses, tract homes with the old ones here and there, etc. Anyway, this particular duplex apartment was a one bedroom where I slept, dad slept in a sofa bed in the living room. I remember the apartment as being strong in character. They had hardwood floors. The kitchen walls had been designed with half knotty pine on the bottom half and a cheery designed wallpaper on the upper half. There was a good sized window at one end that faced the front of the housing where the kitchen table and chairs were. The kitchen was oblong with exceptionally made cupboards over the double sinks... the fridge and stove on the other side and the back door opening up to the back yard. There was also a garage attached to the duplex. These rentals back then were built with beautiful wood (wish I knew what kind) I remember there was a pride and care it seemed in how things were built back then... the materials used had a longevity in those years. And I remember the owners of these duplexes. They had their own home built towards the front main street... The husband was the head postmaster and his name was Mr. Stump... Kind of funny talking about the wood and all. Your speaking of the beauty of natural wood made me remember this time. I think my memories are revived when I see your videos of the Cabin and its' surroundings of openness free from the masses. I miss my hometown but it's gone now with the change in its' peoples - one of which was the incoming refugees from the Korean War and Vietnam War that began in the early 50's and the 60's... Also, the open borders exploded with the Hispanic culture. The languages are many and the businesses are now mainly large banks, corporate headquarters of the tech industry, etc. So, yes, I do miss my old hometown. But that's just the way it is.

Shawn, when it comes to personal tastes that we prefer to surround our selves in, it really is to each his own. From a designers standpoint the general rule is the more natural wood used in a space the more warmth and closeness to nature one should feel. There are those like you who almost can't get enough and on the opposite end those who cannot stand the look of natural wood. For me personally I grew up in the Sierra Mountains and love how natural wood makes a space feel. Craftsmanship and attention to detail in a balanced space is my taste. Meaning a balance between wood and hard surfaces as you put it. However, what you are doing here is off the chain, and every detail you add in your way makes this cabin better. I have enjoyed having the opportunity to share this journey with you from the very start, and look forward to seeing what else you do

I mean this with absolute no disrespect to your wife at all...but do you have an identical twin brother? Loll. It’s very refreshing to see what you accomplish and do, hard work is very few and far between in today’s society unfortunately. I live in NYC where the biggest dilemma of the day is what hair gel a guy is going to wear or where to get his eyebrows waxed. I’m not saying that’s every man, but it’s definitely a dominant part of where I’m from. Anyway, you are very talented and a hard worker and it’s a joy to watch. You take so much pride in the work you do and it’s so apparent to everyone, it literally seeps out of you. Incredible job and I’m so happy I found your channel (watching Joes video, another awesome man.) I’m enjoying this cabin series immensely and I applaud you for all your hard work and dedication because without even knowing a lick of what to do, what I do know is this was challenging (A good challenge though.) take care !

Saw a elderly white couple just taking their walk being attacked by a hateful bully. Two elders under 5 feet tall in their 80s by a thug over 6 feet tall and over 200 pounds. It just breaks my heart... Our local Asian mom/pop store owners and their children also get picked on.

Maybe its a good idea to also make a window on the top floor. Not only to have some natural lighting in there but also to have some sort of escape hatch in case the cabin catch fire. Great vid again!

I built a shed today.... in my backyard.... just me & my son. Your videos inspired me to get off my a** and finish a long over due project. I imagined myself being you (but slightly better looking) and my son was your dog (he was much less energetic) and amazingly enough we finished the shed with no casualties. Kidding aside, your patience, diligence & humanity remind me of my grandpa. He built his own cabin in the Big Thompson Canyon of Colorado. He let me help in the summers. Thank you for rekindling those memories. You're awesome!

I really Love the rustic wood trim. Wood is so natural and beautiful the way it is why do people change it to something that it's not. I love when bark is left on countertop and shelves edges and bowls, etc.

I have always wanted to be doing what you are. I may never know that reality , but feel through you and your work, I can at least come close to it in spirit!! Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us!!! -DoJo

I just found your channel and absolutely love what you are doing. I've decided this year that instead of chasing the money and spending it on convenient premade things (food, furniture, art etc.) I want to reduce my spending to what I need and make as much of it as possible myself. One of the healthiest and most rewarding decisions for me.
