TRIPP machine is inserting new railroad cross ties. He had pulled the old
ties out the day before. Can't ever go wrong putting new cross ties in
the track. We had a shut down for a long wall move and the tie gang
put in 2500 new ties that week. We are very fortunate the company spent
the money they did during the shut down to help make our track safer.

When I was living in Charlotte NC, NS and CSX both had their main line track crews come through. Amazing seeing the 40-50 different pieces of gear doing huge amounts of work on 2 lines at almost the same time. (Same week...)-- The NS crew seemed to be a fair bit more efficient than the CSX group.. Replaced worn rail, about 1/2 the ties, tamped and surfaced several miles per day CSX was eliminating a lot of disused switches on their line through Charlotte along with replacing ties, and doing another big fix on the line near the downtown where a big diesel managed to go swimming in a flooding creek. One of the NS folk said they got double the mileage done on any given day, which was amazing to me... Same size groups (again, didn't count them, but the counts were almost the same...)-- no idea how they managed it, other than having everything exactly where it needed to be when they needed it....

Chop the "top" of the ties with an Adz. Dig out the end. Used pointed bars and Tie Tongs to pull it out. Grab a pick and loosen the base of the gravel/ ballast. Dig it out. Grab a new tie with the tongs and pull it under the rails. Use a bar to lift one end of the tie while others tamp it up. Repeat other end. Use track jack to lift the rail. Slide Tie Plate under. Spike the Rail Spikes. Repeat other side. Dress it up. Then apply Rail Anchors and Anchor Spikes as needed. Repeat on down the line...........

Gee that TRIPP machine operator knows his stuff. Tosses those cross ties around like match sticks. Dave do you have any concrete ties on your railroad. I used to run 240 car iron ore trains on the RioTinto Railway in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Even the hardwood cross ties ( sleepers ) didn't last long. Termites like eating them. Those ties are sitting below the level of where the previous ties were. So how do they get spiked down? Wouldn't it leave a gap between the top of the tie and the bottom of the rail? Does something lift up the tie while they are being spiked and then somehow something (tamper?) fills in ballast under the tie? I love learning about railroading from your videos, Dave!
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 5 ай бұрын
Good question Tracy. There has to be a space between the bottom of the rail and the top of the ties in order to put the tie plates back in. Once the tie plates are in, the spiker machine will come along. The spiker has a hydraulic clamp that goes down under the tie and picks the tie and tie plates up against the bottom of the rail, then spikes it tight to the rail. After that I follow with my tamper squeezing ballast under neath the ties to hold the tie up. Thanks so much for taking the time today to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

I don't know exactly the cost of a new TRIPP machine but am guessing around a half million Jim. We load 3 different size barges here. Each coal car holds 115 tons. Standard barges hold 900 tons, stumbo barges hold 1100 to 1200 tons, jumbo barges hold 1300 to 1500 tons so now you can figure out how many cars will fill each size barge. We also haul typically 38 cars on our train. Thanks so much for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
