This week, we join homeowners Qin Hui and Janice as they take you through their recently renovated 5-room HDB resale flat in Boon Keng. They moved in 6 months ago and were determined to create a modern minimalist space that reflected their personal style and love for entertaining. With a floor area of 1,184 square feet and a renovation cost of $100,000, they did an entire overhaul of the previous owner's 16-year-old home.
One of their favourite features of the house is the full city view from the kitchen, as well as the spacious living room. The uniform white and grey colour scheme, along with walnut wood furniture pieces, helps to reduce visual clutter, creating a calming atmosphere. They opted for a short throw projector instead of a TV to keep in line with the minimalist theme. Also, they went for micro cement flooring that was used throughout the home for its ease of maintenance and warmth to the touch.
In the kitchen, they had to hack a wall to make space for the fridge and used stainless steel for the countertop and backsplash for its durability. The master bedroom was also hacked down to enlarge the space and create an attached study. The steel countertop in the study was used to match the kitchen design.
Finally, they find that their minimalist space truly helps them unwind after a long day at work, with its simplicity and lack of clutter.
Special thanks to Qin Hui and Janice for opening up their home to us.

Real question: Does an overhaul of a 16yo flat followed by a reno with not that much carpentry really cost $100K now? Maybe it's just me, but it really does seem like a lot of money for what it is.

I think they have quite a bit of carpentry to look minimalistic (living curved wall, false ceiling, MBR cupboard, kitchen cabinets) . Also a fair bit of hacking. But they should've saved on tiling cos only toilet had that. Also saved on the hiding of wires of lights as they went for the casing look.

I love minimalism, but will not deprive myself the feeling of warmths by investing in warm lightings and a little touch of greeneries in strategic corners. Other than that, I will not splurge on ornaments, that do not spark joy, just for the sake of blending it into the color theme.

I think the misconception people have about minimalism is that it's about having little to no possession. It's part of it but not really. Minimalism emphasis is on simplicity and so I low key find it ironic that such a huge flat is bought for 2 people. Of course, there's a chance that the owners plan to start a family. Minimalism also doesn't mean no warmth. But I'm sure with time, the owners will slowly showcase their personality.

I agree. This is not “minimalism” imho…it’s more like “emptism”. On paper … if one reads the (any) description of a minimalist interior design style … and compare it to examples of images of interiors done in the minimalist design style … there’s 1 or 2 elements that don’t quite jive I feel… like a disconnect. Properly designed and styled minimalist interiors never look empty. On functionality and visual clutter - Eg… many ppl confuse visual clutter with visual weight. An adequately functional living space needs stuff. If one likes to have friends over and enjoy cocktails and snacks in the living room …. You probably need a coffeetable and a few side tables. What one can do to keep in the style of minimalism is to choose furniture with less visual weight that is scaled correctly (not too big but never too small to avoid a dinky vibe) but not omit having a coffeetable and side tables altogether. This also gives the space an airier feel in way. But you do need stuff. This is what I learned from my own Reno journey last year. Just my 2 cts. “Clutter is not a good look… but so is an empty look”. Don’t get me wrong though … I do love the bathroom and the living room has good bones I feel.

One thing I see a LOT of, in nearly every video of spaces in Asia, are the really ugly aircon units on full display. I understand that aircon is a must, but why isn't it integrated into these apartments like they are with most modern houses and new apartments nowadays (in Sydney Australia at least). Is it a legal limitation perhaps that the aircon units can't be integrated/built in to fake walls, or above storage spaces so that they are hidden/concealed?
@pollypuffington2243
@pollypuffington2243 Жыл бұрын
I am not from Asia but I have family living there. I believe that it's the way the buildings are built, they don't have the same type of air ducts that you find in Australia,America uk etc. so no central air. Their environment is very different so the building specifications and the materials that they use will be different. Those a/c units are ductless so they provide greater flexibility in where they came used in a home

Micro cement is expensive but it doesn’t have that cement effect. It is too even and smooth and i can hardly see any texture. Same for the lime wash, i couldn’t see the texture. Likely because everything are just too plain and light. This house look very boring and bare. Doesn’t look comfortable or inviting. It is pretty hard to make a fridge look less ugly in a kitchen. Many people here choose to put it in the living room which is worse. Like this house, the fridge stick out like a sore thumb. I realised that most people here, including IDs doesn’t really know how to mix and match different materials and colours. They just use one material or colour throughout the entire space or end up like rojak.
