We are so glad to have experienced this together, especially with such hospitable people! We truly believe that travel is about breaking barriers and stepping out of stereotypes, while keeping and open mind and enjoying the local culture of people around the world 💗 Just to clear things out, there are different estimates about the size of the total population of people with Romani ancestry in Romania, varying from 2% to 8% of the population, because many people of Romani descent do not declare themselves Roma. For example, the Council of Europe estimates that approximately 1.35 million Roma people live in Romania, a figure equivalent to almost 7% of the total population.

My romanian fellows, you should've planed to take them to Targu Jiu and have a mix of even much openmindness, showing them the Romanian gypsy community from there and also the Constantin Brancusi's Infinity Column, The Kiss Gate, The Table of the Silence, all of them authentic and placed into an open park, donated to his birth country by the father of the sculpture Modernism himself. Because it's not the first time I see this village/community where you took them on a yt channel. That same region was on a Spanish tv travel series called "Madrileños por el Mundo" back there in 2015, if I recall it accurately.

Call them gypsies not Roma/Romani. This caused actual "Romani" = Romanians big reputational damage around the world due to the name similarity which has nothing to do with the city of Rome or Roma (as they call it in Italian and Romanian), which inspired the country's name Romania as in a continuing Roman customs, traditions and a Romance language called Romanian. Don't perpetuate this confusion. You're causing reputational damage to your country "brand". Gypsy culture and language has ties to an Indian minority group that came to Europe from India and Pakistan. Their own language is a variation of Punjabi. Make that clear to everyone if your goal is to educate these travelers.

@@dabbleandtravel I saw you don't like book stores, like Carturesti in Bucharest, so I find the way to introduce you the father of Modernism in sculpture, Constantin Brancusi. A peasants' son who created The Infinity Column, The Kiss Gate, The Table of Silence, Mademoiselle Pogany and so much more. Don't expect you to know who George Enescu, nor Dinu Lipatti were &not to mention Míhai Eminescu, the equivalent of Shackespeare in UK. Take a look at the next two videos&after the hammers-limos and the motorcade of high class, at taking pictures into the park, you'll see in the backstage some kind of "stick". Well, that kind of "stick" it's The Infinity Column. In the second video link, you'll see the same moment of photocall, but between the pilars of The Kiss Gate. Enjoy the "ride", cause the images are speaking for themselves. I doubt we only have around 2% Roma population. Probably between 5-10%, ever with how many already migrated west! The "problem" is the honest, hard working ones like these lovely representatives seem to be a minority amongst the general Roma population. 150+ years since education became free in Romania and most of them still reject it and end up doing all sorts of illegal activities for a living... But we do love their culture and their food! They really get less and less hate than they once did, fortunately!

The Roma/Gypsy people were actually brought to Europe, most of them, by the Ottomans as their Empire stretched from Europe to as far as India in the East. So that started about 700 years ago not 1500. They may have started enter Europe as early as X century with the migration of Avars, Magyar, Pecenegs but is uncertain. Yes, they were used as slaves by the boyars but they were freed starting around XIX centuries.

Why is everyone glaring over the marriage of their 11 year old daughter to the neighbour? That's still illegal, as it should be according to Romanian law. This tradition was valid not just for rroma, but for multiple communities from 1800s and forth. You had the marriage markets all over Europe back in the day, with women that would stop being in their prime by the time they were 18. We have all grown, have understood about human rights, but somehow for the rroma people - "oh, it's just tradition". This is not ok. Child marriage is not ok! No matter how hospitable they are!

This is complete BS. that makes almost 1 in 10 people that you see on the street to be gypsy. Do you have that feeling walking on the street ? Don’t start with “yeah but they live mostly in remote villages” because it is not true and you know why. In the movie Van Helsing (starring Hugh Jackman) they show the Romanian countryside looking very gothic and gray and the Carpathian mountains look absolutely imposing and scary. The shots in several videos here on KZbin on Romania though doesn't look anything like that. Much of it actually looks peaceful and pastoral. I know movies are movies and not real, but the contrast has taken me by surprise.

We forget that up until about 60 to 75 years ago marriage at an age that we now consider too young was commonplace and the waiting on older ages to get married is only really possible because of the longer lifespan we generally have now but remember that it was not uncommon for the men to die as early as their early 40's or in fact mid thirties was commonplace in the western world until around the 1700's so people had to start a family early then and don't forget how often deaths during childbirth were for both the mother and baby ...was a very different world folks

As a matter of fact, don't know where or who gave them those infos. They sound like wikipedia. The gypsies, ours included, migrated from India, Pakistan to what we call Europe, today, at the same time with the expanding Otoman Empire. There for, arround 1435 with the fall of The Byzantine Roman Empire, not "about 1500 years ago", as said on the video. Second, since the gypsies had apeared, they were just as misstreated by the tataric or otoman invasions as the locals. Or do you(the travelers) think that when invaded the otomans took to their harems based on citizenship? Not only during the nazis were having problems, but they don't mention that during the commies they had their gold confiscated and after '89 Romanian state gave it back, just as they did with all the private properties confiscated to Romanians, too. During the comunist time, the gypsies were the only ones able to travel and sell things freely all around the country and after the Berlin Wall, they were the first to travel to European countries. The Romanians doesn't "hate" them, but those that are breaking the low, which are pretty much the same like any other gang(you tell me how from living on social security in any other european country, wich many are, you can own a Lamborghini, for example). The shoking thing, tough, is hearing Molly saying that it proves that getting married with 14 years old it works!!!!!!! And that makes me wonder what type of game it's taking place. Is somebody trying to prove that the English grooming gangs were ok, or what??(btw, the modern gypsies aren't geting married with 14, since their king, emperor-in Romania yes, they had both king and emperor- decided that 18 is the Romanian legal age for becoming adult, there for, the same age should aply to them as Romanian citizens as well.

Romani ppl were not mistreated the same way that other locals were. Romani people were ENSLAVED for 500 years in Romania and they were owned by the state and the church. They were sold, their babies were sold, they were tortured and murdered, in chains, they were raped, for half a millenium yet nobody ever mentions that. I grew up in a former communist country, where we had gipsy communities nearby. As a child, I had vitnessed many many times, how gipsy men treated their women...horrible. I can never forget how a gipsy woman went to fetch her husband from a bar with five kids in a tow.. The husband came out from the bar, drunk and started beating up his wife, who was pregnant. He was not just hitting her, but also kicking her in her stomach several times. As they married so young, they had usually 10-14 children before they turned forty. I know this documentary is trying to show the best, but it's not real.
