Inside a Russian fur farm - BBC News

Furs and animal skins are back in fashion, and are being transformed by top designers into accessories and clothes at jaw-dropping prices. But what do those who buy clothes and accessories made from fur and exotic animal skins know about where they come from? Reggie Yates went to Russia, to find out more about its fur industry. There he was given rare access to a Siberian fur farm, where sable - which provide one of the world's most sought-after animal skins - are bred. There were other animals too, all in small cages and many of them clearly in distress.
This World: Inside the Billionaire's Wardrobe is broadcast at 9pm on Tuesday 26 April 2016 on BBC Two

As a biologist , I can see the animals here are totally neurotic. Lynx have vast territories they patrol. Weasels, Sables, Mink, and Ermine are wild animals which need lots of room, stimulation, and actually being in the wild. The obscene idea that we are factory 'farming' fur animals, including foxes, mink, rabbits, cats, is not only disgusting and inhumane, it is totally un=necssary. The models who wear these dead animals, the old wealthy dowagers who need diamonds, jewelry, and furs should be forced to watch how their clothes are raised, butchered, and sold. Dressing up artificially thin , big boobed models as sexually attractive , hormonal cretins, appears as phoney as the light-footed men and banks who support them. If it was me, I would show this to the 'fashion' houses of Europe like Gucci and Versace, and tell them to knock it off with the Vanity death camps. It's not as if we are in the 1800's ( where sable was, like caviar and diamonds-really for the rich); today we don't need furs. They climb to the top of Everest with down, and to the South Pole with down, we have too many great synthetic fibers to be farming and killing and driving crazy all these members of the weasel family. Perhaps if they slaughtered a few foxes, minks, and sables on the Runway in Paris, Milan, or London you might get an idea what your Vanity Killing really looks like. As for Russia, Poland, Lithuania... you can always add a greedy person anywhere to the list. Fur bearing animals are lucrative. Canada, USA, were first used as beaver markets and muskrat and mink businesses by the earliest Europeans who could make it over here and become trappers. It was the French Trappers in the US and Canada who were the best out-doorsmen, and the most incredible map makers. They would vomit to see what fur farming has done. Milk from Cows? Do it like the Swiss or the French. Beef from cattle? Small lots where they can roam and feed on fodder not corn and antibiotics. Chicken for your Mcnothings? Factory chicken farming with the poor southern white farmers locked into huge 'leases' by the likes of Purdue ad nauseum. They pluck the farmer, And the Chicken down south here. Pig lots full of sewage, urine, lakes full of excrement flowing over and polluting the once fresh water. And yes, mostly in the south. Beef lots all over the great 'West' and Mid-west being fed corn, and pellets and antibiotics because beef cattle don' t normally eat corn- it ulcers the stomach and GI; Beef cattle and cows eat grass. Small dairy farms, small beef farms, small chicken farms, are no longer viable for Mcnothing, Purdue, the biggest Swine producers( pun intended), eggs producers...It is ALL factory farmed. With over 6 billion people, the Earth can't sustain this kind of population; it could hardly have sustained 3 billion decently...now what China? So those the Chinese and Russians and the Eastern Europeans are by far the most egregious murderers in the fur trade..never mind 'wet markets' slaughtering rare animals live in front of you, or pretending that Tiger testicles will cure you erection difficulties ( aren't they aware of Cialis and Viagra?). One look from their history though, shows how well they treated actual human beings! Start counting the human deaths in the millions, then tens of millions, and then hundreds of millions! China, Russia, Poland, Eastern European ex- communist troglodytes? I would expect it from them. But how can anyone but a fool or a sadist pretend that a magnificent wild cat, a Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Jaguar belongs in a cage? A Lynx in a Cage? A lynx belongs in a thousand acres of forest, far from any human being. But I know of plenty of human being who ought to be put in those caged conditions. Once again as a biologist, I can tell you these animals are being tortured and driven crazy from the smallness of the cages, the boredom, and the cruelty of the fur trade. There is only one place fur belongs: on the body of the god-damned wild animal from which you skinned it! Period!!

“China, Russia, Poland, Eastern European ex-communist troglodytes” never mind the fact that Western Europeans were the earliest to stuff animals (oh, and humans too) into small filthy cages, and drove the trend for such expensive animal pelts. Even today these countries are some of the major consumers, but they outsource production to poorer countries so that y’all can remain on your high horses. Limits of hypocrisy, really…

@1:40 The farm worker(?) says "The size of the cage fits their needs for them to jump and move about," we assume their *idea is similar to a hamster wheel; the cage is of *adequate size for them to be able to run full loops and burn of energy/stay warm. If it were any smaller, they wouldn't be able to get that movement, so this is the *practical/functional minimum size. That sort of makes sense in terms of livestock, but it's hard to argue in favor of it when they seem as frantic as they do. Animals in zoos, even the best zoos, tend to pace to make up travel distance they would get in the wild. An animal that normally goes 10 miles in the wild would do about 20 laps in a 0.5 mile long enclosure, even with other enrichment. Not sure how far sable travel in the wild, but it would certainly take an astounding number of loops to meet. There are always space constraints on livestock to balance adequate housing with profit, but animals kept as conventional livestock are fully domesticated for that purpose and are better *designed to handle captivity. Sables are not.

This is sad and disgusting. I would hope these are animals bred in captivity for this, just for the fact sable have been hunted for centuries for their pelt and scent glands, and it's taken a huge toll on their population. At least if these were captive bred there wouldn't be as much pressure on the wild sables, as inhumane and despicable this is. Fur farms where I live (where mink, marten and fox are farmed) at least take the animal's health and general well being into consideration, and if conditions are poor the farm and the people who run it could end up in a lot of trouble. I understand we need certain types of animal farms-not fur farms really, but those for meat etc, but if you're farming animals, why can't people just at least make the conditions for the animal healthy?

And that's why one should stop ignorant shopping. Inform your self about the origin of the product. Fur is the most sustainable product in fashion. Its the same with generic vs organic meat really. Its a choice that one should make consciously and if one has a problem with fur, going vegan is the only way out. Where do you think the leather of our daily worn bags or belts come from? Think about that the next time you ware you favourite pair of leather shoes...

Dear People and Designers etc, technologies are very advanced today. No one should ever need to kill or skin any animal for any accessory, any furniture, any piece of head and body wear. There are fake materials that look and feel exactly the same, cost way lesser and don't smell bad with sweat / body heat. There are many beautiful furnitures made of synthetic material which is way cheaper, as durable and does not smell moldy like animal skin and fur. Walking around with animal skin and fur on your body is a very outdated thing of the past. People who do so thinks that they are fashionable but in fact, they are just an old fashion joke.

what does this make any different with chicken farm? as long they are breed in the farm, i dont see the problem
@michaela564
@michaela564 8 жыл бұрын
+one-O-one At least there are free-range chicken farms where they do have freedom to move around outdoors and you can choose to buy free range produce in the store. These animals that they are keeping in small cages in the documentary are predators and they cover large spaces of land everyday to get food where as a chicken doesn't.

+Michael Andrew i agree with you. but fence only wont barricade these guys from running away into the wild. Hence, the only option is to put them in a cage. Atleast, they were given 1 cage per sable. It is quite rare to see animal farm with personal cage with this size of animal. You will know if u are living near these area. These kind of farming practice is much better than what they did in america.

+one-O-one The thing is fur is not a necessity like food is so if there is no humane way to farm the fur this practice should just be shut down.

+Michael Andrew yeah but when u are living in an area covered with 100 percent snow, with no land to plant crop, go fish or do anything to make money. its the only option they had to stay survive. you know not everybody live in city and go to office to work. be more open minded man

Most of the world's farmed fur is produced by European farmers. There are 5,000 fur farms in the EU, all located across 22 countries; these areas of production collectively account for 50% of the global production of farmed fur. The top three fur producers are Denmark, Poland and China. Finland is the largest United States supplier of fox pelts. Major export markets include China, Russia, Canada, and the EU.

+Kelly oxo - no, in the short time they have them they are skinned and sold. As a pet sell there is a longer lead-time, more regulation, health, feed and so on.

If you are anguished over this video(because there are good reasons to feel this way) and still eats animals and uses their products, wear animal products which are no different then what these guys are doing, please consider going vegan. Please match your beliefs with your actions. Don't point fingers at others without changing your own behaviour towards animals.

Im from a family of fur trappers, and to be quite honest its disgusting how sable are farmed. Trapping gets a bad reputation due to animal rights groups, but when you stop fur trapping you get fur farms. At least trappers catch wild animals that were living free, unlike fur farmers who make the animals suffer for their fur. Trappers nowadays dont even make good money, so you cant say they do it for the money. Not only is trapping not good money, theres regulations on it to keep it humane while fur farmers can do shit like what we see in this video. Traps here in Canada are tested to meet standards, you cant just go outside with whatever trap you want. But the fur farmers? The sables are born in the cages, pretty much. They dont get a chance at freedom.
