Located in Noosa, Australia is a beach house designed by Frank Macchia, Principal at Macchia Design Studio. Boarded by lush greenery on the eastern side and a magnificent ocean bay on the northern, Boonburrh House does not dominate the site but instead respects all that was there before it. However, as the beach house sat on a public block - with a busy street out front - there was a need for the designer to make the family home private, secure, nurturing and comfortable, all while being open and connected to its surrounds. As such, Frank Macchia has used a range of interior design techniques that help to keep the home discreet from passers-by. One contributing idea for discreetness was to layer the beach house within the site while the second idea was a minimisation of the material palette.
As the beach house tour reveals, the landscape of the home has played a critical role for two reasons - one being that the designer wanted to establish a connection to the magic of the garden and the second to create a sense of privacy. Alongside these elements, there were many interior design influences for the family home that were discovered while the owners were on vacation in Sri Lanka. After staying at some of Geoffrey Bawa’s homes, the owners wanted to create a pull-apart home that would reveal a series of pavilions connected by open courtyards, link ways and verandas that are either partially opened or closed.
Complemented by Noosa’s perfect climate, Boonburrh House is further supplemented with open architecture that allows the owners to turn the extra courtyards and link ways into extra rooms. Exemplifying this is the living room pavilion, which has large glass sliding doors that disappear and open the space up to immediately connect to the garden. However, the home’s true appeal is the interplay of dark and light of the interior design where the main part of the residence is given access to both eastern and northern light. Additionally, the beach house maintains a minimal material palette with timber, concrete and hand-built copper fixtures. Respectful and harmonising with the landscape, Boonburrh House by Frank Macchia gives its owners a place in which they can retreat to and be at one with their surrounds.

I like the way it looks. I'd never live there though. Where I live it wouldnt even be legal to build a house like this anymore. They want at least 10 meters around the house as a fire break.

Rarely does such a substantial, serious house fit this well on such a site. The tendency is always to overdo just because you can, rather than to remain discreet. A truly serene home.

I liked a lot of elements of this home but, overall, it came off as too dark. I love dark timber but when it is combined with dark concrete and there are no other elements to contrast with it, it just looks like a cave. And, no interiors were really shown here - it's all exteriors.

First came across Frank’s designs through his Daughter’s tiny home. The ‘darkness’ of his designs strikes such a cord, exhibiting a stunning, sophisticated, cosy, cocoon-like aesthetic that stands alone. If I ever get a chance to design a home from scratch, Frank will be the designer I call on. 🖤

a lot of people generally didn't like the dark tone material, but how grateful I am watching this gorgeous design that exactly has the same intention as me while talking about the dark tone material. I think dark-tone material (or to be exact in this case dark color palette) has a lot of positive aspects for users over a long period of time, not just about how easy and low maintenance it is, dark tone color palette also gives the enclosure vibes that can increase the comfort value of user being inside the room psychologically. In the presentation aspect, dark tone materiality also successfully brings masculinity, maturity, solidity, and elegance to the building indoors and outdoors. love it!😍😍

They mentioned the screens and how they can add or subtract the light but I really would have liked a lighter color palette to begin with. Maybe some lighter wood, or natural concrete instead of dark stained concrete. I'd have to leave every light on in the house 24/7. Don't get me wrong, I love dramatic moody colors and blacks and greys, but need a little more lightness inside. As with all home design...to each their own.

I actually like the house, though the color palette is too dark for me. I have a videography criticism, though. This video and the last two or three have all had a very greyed out, dreary LUT on them, such that each time I first start to watch the video I think that the brightness on my screen has changed. And that's on an LCD screen, which have a habit of being over bright. It gives the videos an almost depressing feeling. It's only been the last few. Your production team needs to look at this. Other than that, the production quality of The Local Project's videos exceed that of a lot of architecture channels.

Yes! But I have learned that you shouldn't expect a lot from architecture channels if you enjoy house tours because they are all about esthetics and nothing else. These are like artsy highlight reels of the best features and materials instead of presenting the full house. lol like.. a lot of time is spent on showcasing rustling leaves, dew on grass, and trickling water rather than giving the audience a good understanding of the layout of the home. And there's always a hallway that you're not quite sure what it facilitates, and the rooms are never accounted for. They say it's a 5 bedroom?.. but you only seen 1 or 2😭🤣. The houses look so beautiful in the thumbnails, though.. which makes it almost impossible not to click but it's ALWAYS a let down. I wish the owners, builders, architects, whomever.. of these homes would allow traditional "house tour" channels to showcase their homes also.

The monochromatic color palette is a visual black hole. Joyless, boring and lazy. "Interplay of light" is literally ignored through most of the spaces. When viewed at even short distances the monotony extinguishes all interest that materials and textures might bring and provides all the intrigue of staring deeply into a school room chalk board. A shocking contrast to an otherwise beautiful property.

I can't believe what a cliche this style has become. Ugly Black or white flat topped boxes in extremely wild places... With giant walls of slide away glass. No screens? Are there no bugs or lizards or birds that would come in? Isn't grit going to fall in the channels eventually? The kitchen looks like something out of a industrial catering service. In a warm climate, it just looks cold blooded and macho.
