Plants need water, light, air and nutrients to grow 🌱
In vertical farms, these things can be supplied directly to the plant without the need for soil
Research at the John Innes Centre helps understand how to get the optimum conditions for the plants and select the right varieties for indoor farm
For example, some scientists at the John Innes Centre study plant’s circadian rhythms, their internal biological clock. This research can inform how plants are grown in vertical farms.
While others research how plants take up and store nutrients such as iron.
They do experiments such as controlling the spectrum of light, how much light they receive and when, regulating nutrient uptake and improving the nutritional value of crops by changing how they are grown.
Vertical farms are changing how and where our food is produced, and our science is helping their success.
