If only these cities and states would devote one tenth as much effort to supporting small-to-middle-sized businesses as they do to pandering to these giants they'd be much better off.

If amazon wants to set up in NoVa, fine. However the taxpayers shouldn't be funding the bill for a trillion dollar company in an area of the country in which every f-in multinational and tech company are and/or want to set up shop.

Frankly, I wouldn't worry about the completion of Phase 2, or even the future expansion of HQ2. The only reason it has slowed is to provide Amazon time to realign their post pandemic plans. They are still figuring out their future business model. Slamming the brakes on their real estate development around the world makes good financial sense. No doubt, some places will be cut back....but, not Northern Virginia and not HQ2. Amazon is now so big that it needs to have a heavy presence in Washington, DC. This is a must. Just having offices on K Street isn't enough. Nor, is Jeff Bezos' DC mansion, which is the largest private home there. Nor, are the huge data and office complexes they have in the Virginia suburbs. They need substantial numbers of employees in the local communities. In the end, it benefits them to close down offices in other cities and shift the jobs to Virginia.

I'd love to see them modify the project to feature some much needed housing. But it's Amazon. So, probably not.

it's really messed up that corporations like Amazon have to get a tax break in order for them to build a headquarters in your city

No mention of Virginia Tech building their Innovation Campus there as part of the deal? You didn't do enough research or don't understand its importance and cost.

Amazon should have located in Philadelphia. Its smack in the middle of the North East Corridor, its cheap to live there, Washington DC, New York and Jersey Shore are close easy weekend trips. it doesn't have the tech infrastructure they need but they are big enough to change that.

Virginia should have slashed the tax incentives in half when Amazon slashed they promised jobs in half. They were looking for 1 city for 50k jobs but split it with NY for 25k each. Even after AOC kicked them out they didn’t bother to bring it them anywhere else. My guess is that they never wanted to create a 2nd HQ. They just wanted a way to get some tax incentives.

I don’t think it really matters at this point whether the entire project is completed sooner or later. You didn’t mention which divisions/operations were happening there which could be important: AWSis likely to continue to grow whereas the others are more consumer fickle, changing demand for VA/DC space

There's no such thing as "north america" other than a geographic landmass reference. There is Continental America, the American Region and Greater America. Bezos griminess aside, he never thought about anything other than Continental America.
