The Orleans Prison fell into chaos in the five days after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29. As the water rose in the prison buildings, deputies deserted en masse, leaving behind prisoners in locked cells. The prisoners spent days without power, food or water, some standing in sewage-tainted water up to their chests or necks. It was also the top 10 worst prison for violence and more in the entire usa and closed down because of that.

As a former inmate I can explain what O.P.P does with the hair/dread locks shown at about 9:05. Those are property bags and that hair was cut in intake and allowed to be placed in property to take home on release or send home once your sentenced to more than a year and one day and sent to Angola. Inmates are held at the parish (which is in the video) until they are sentenced and transferred to Angola. But before sentencing majority of people with dreads label them and send them home. It is allowed and even in some cases when inmates return home they grown an Afro about 2 inches long and reattach the dread to save years worth of time with regrowing their dreads. EVEN THOUGH IT LOOKS COOL THERE IS NO VOODOO OR RITUALS TAKING PLACE HERE.

Also would recommend tenn state prison in nashville (gotta sneak in, but I know the way) it's MASSIVE and it's where the movie "the green mile" was filmed as well as where the legendary "old sparky" electric chair put 125 prisoners to rest in death row.-a TN local urban explorer

I live in Louisiana and I would just like to say our government is terrible at allocating funds. There are so many abandoned buildings especially in New Orleans and almost every road near the south side will tear up your car. Our education systems in impoverished districts are underfunded which fuel the cycle of our vicious crime rates (LA is #1 for crime rates but 50th in education in the country). All in all, Louisiana sucks to live in, but fun to come party at. Our food is amazing but you’d be lucky to taste it before you get shot either by a criminal or a cop.

Great video as always. Havent gotten the funds to explore myself so i figured id send and idea your way. Plus would be cool to meet up and explore together! Richmond city jail and the old pump houses on the river from 100 years ago. I know they built a new facility and the old should be left behind by now. Would be abandoned roughly 5 years now so im betting it would still have some good stuff left to see, as well as we have an abandoned train tunnel from the late 1800s. Red jumpers are usually high profile/segregation or inmates who rolled up and are protected. Now days most facilities you dont sit at the glass for calls etc. Its done over a monitor and most cell blocks have a room off of them that has a monitor for visitation. Not many places still do face to face through the glass unless your in federal time with conical visits which is becoming more rare by the day to aid against escapes etc. All rec yards are razor wired not barbed wire. You can escape much easier through barbed rather than razor wire. They had escapes on alcatraz much less these mainland facilities. That big open room would be considered and open door so they can roam more than a cell block with daytime let out. 3 tier bunks are less common but ive been in a facility with them. Solitary is 23 and one but even if they get 24 and 0 they still have to be let out atleast once every 7-9 days for a shower due to so many facilities doing negligent things to inmates

Hey Josh, I have two viewpoints about the prison: • INMATES: They shouldn't have done what they did, then they wouldn't have experienced what they did. • ABANDONED: Being abandoned for days without access to food and whatever else is no way to treat people. A few other things: • MANAGEMENT: That prison is/was so poorly managed. How can they leave people's private info and belongings just open for anyone to gain access to? That's a good way for them to have their identities stolen. • ROSARY BEADS - Rosary beads are not Voodoo. They are part of Catholicism, Catholic religion. TERMS: • EXAM ROOM - It was an exam/treatment room not med lab. • VIALS - Those were blood vials for collecting blood samples. • YARD - Not playground, it's called the yard or exercise area. • CELLS - Cells not rooms. • SOLITARY - Solitary confinement, some prisons have small exercise areas for those in solitary as seen on another video of yours awhile back. Ok, stay safe and be wise. 😇

I love Josh but like you said. He says some stuff that just makes me nuts. With the AC unit - “there is probably some old ass air in there “. 🤷🏻🤷🏻

Our court system and prison system need a total overhaul. We treat prisoners in this country worse that the animals in the shelter. It was an interesting video, as well as depressing. Thanks for sharing, Josh. People need to see this. 👍🏼👍🏼

Makes me wonder how the criminals treated their victims... an eye for an eye so to speak so I really don't care how the inmates were treated lol do the crime, do the time!

@@zebfox011 Yes I totally agree. Prisoners have better conditions than most nursing homes and most of the people in nursing homes have never done anything wrong in their lives. They get three free meals, a bed to sleep in, and even jobs. I believe prisons should not have very many luxuries such as iPads.

@@zebfox011 Then you must have missed the part of the video about the man that spent 44 years in a concrete room for a crime he did not commit. 🤨

Your thumb nail is a prison in my neck of the woods. It's a pretty interesting place. Also they allow overnights there. I have a pretty good story about a paranormal experience my son and I had if you want to hear it. Also I'm a sceptic, but I was there for this one.

Someone needs to lock those ppl who left the prisoners for days with out food or water that’s horrible What wrong with the city tear down all the old building down is it because it’s to much money to do so they leave it to rot?

I spent 3 days there in June of 1977. Smoking a J behind a bar with a friend when two cops drove by. It was just a tourist shakedown. The attorney got $500 and bond company got $250. I never had to go back from my home in Atlanta. Reason was you can be represented by your lawyer in absentia. Napoleonic Code is what Orleans Parish was under.
