Now days, a lot of the younger people will sit on a machine about 10 minutes looking at their cell phone before they do a set. The old days of working out were the best.

Yuko Kanegawa I was around in the old days grew up in the 1970’s. I have seen how the gym equipment and supplement industry evolved. You have no idea how harder things were back then. The supplements SUCKED. They tasted NASTY. Technology had made it easy for fitness people now. Gyms had no tv’s and internet back in the day. It was a SWEAT SHOP. They didn’t have hammer strengths, Smith machines and all these life fitness and cybex machines. There are so many manufacturers now and different designs. In general it is easier for fitness people now then when I was growing up. It was even worst when I was a kid in the 1960’s when weightlifting was frowned upon by many athletes. Even in the 1970’s lifting was just for body builders, strength athletes and football. Now it is for everything.

What I love about Tom is that he shows you how hard you can actually push yourself. Way beyond what I thought was hard work before seeing him. Also he shows that you need to pay attention to what your body responds to, not just duplicating others work outs.

Back in the early 90s, I went to see the Arnold Classic. Platz was in the audience, & I hoped to meet him. After the show, a long line of people formed, waiting to get his autograph or a pic with him. Tom signed every autograph, spoke personally with every individual, and let everybody take a pic with him. He stayed long after the auditorium had emptied around us. He uplifted everybody around him--a really nice & inspirational guy. Not many champions like that these days in any sport.

Then I suddenly read in the comments that Ric has passed away in the meantime. I'm shocked actually. Very, very sad to hear. 😪😪 Rest in peace Ric and thank you for all the great video's. My condolences to his family and I wish all strength to them. ❤

Great interview. Toms intensity back then was just incredible. My first year in the gym was 1979 and i loved it every time I went and for many reasons. So much has changed since then in a lot of ways and not for the better. Most of todays gyms dont even compare to how gyms were back then. The feel was just great. When im in another state I still look for an old school gym, After 40 years of non stop training I cant get enough. Like you have said it is a life style, a life style I love.

I miss the comradere of the gyms when I worked out in my 20's. People worked in with you, you jumped in to spot a guy that was bench pressing by himself. If someone was using the squat rack, you'd say, how many more sets, do you mind if I join in...sure, no problem. Nowadays at the gym, I find people are very territorial...you don't ask someone if you can work in with them, you have to wait until they are finished. Everyone has their EarPods on and is doing their own thing, back in the day, if I joined a gym, within 2 months, I knew most regulars, today I can work out for 6 months in a gym and not know anyone.
@dudeshamus14514 жыл бұрын
I've primarily lifted at home but I've worked in commercial gyms over the last few years. There is almost no communication or camaraderie between members in the weight room. I'm sure it's very different in real bodybuilding, powerlifting, strongman or crossfit gyms, but those are rarer and rarer these days. Hence why I lift at home haha.
@stevensweet88344 жыл бұрын
It is so different now! Back in 80s we all helped each other. Passed on information by actually talking. Worked in sets and always spotted each other. Never forget those days!

@tadejsusta4 жыл бұрын
I don't really care if they have earpods etc. If I need to use squat rack then I'll just approach one and ask how many sets he still has and if still a lot, then I'll ask if I can join. I have never had any issues. It is usually also like this, that they then hurry up to finish their sets and not look so much at the phone.
@JA_WILL4 жыл бұрын
I have to agree unfortunately. Been on both sides of it. In the 1980's I would just say "can I work in" and it was all good. Now as you say its like a SheepDog and his sheep. Sometimes now I don't want anyone to bother me until I am done. We can all be better that is for sure.

Just few comments: I realize that you have to train hard and eat right to achieve what Tom has, but it has to be gauged according to your genetics and whether you are natural. I do think that this very intense training has its merits, but those intense training sessions have to be so far and few for regular folk. Most folk do better with a bit more volume, a bit less intensity, and a bit more frequency; there is a fine line in there. Tom was my hero in his hay-days.

I used to admire Tom when I was a teen starting out lifting in 80's. Biggest legs in business. Tom's great guy, personality and legend bodybuilder. I always thought that the reason he never won Mr Olympia is because his legs were so huge it made his upper body look smaller in comperison. Sometime too big is not always good thing. Glad to see Tom is doing well.
@discernment89634 жыл бұрын
Had his upper body been comparable to his legs he'd more than likely been Mr Olympia for as long as he wanted (particularly in that era) to be. However, if the question was asked the opposite way as in his legs being comparable to his upper body, it'd have been a completely different situation. A Square quality's as Rectangle, but vice versa doesn't apply, theoretically similar situations.
@tigrotom73124 жыл бұрын
@@discernment8963 Yeah his upper body was not as big, not at Olympia level. I feel that if he worked his upper body more and leg less he would have been more balanced and might have won the title at some point. But Tom is great guy never the less, great personality.
@discernment89634 жыл бұрын
@@tigrotom7312 You missed my point of irony, but I was basically agreeing with what you were saying in your 1st post. Ask anyone that was following the bodybuilding world back then, T.P. absolutely did train his upper body every bit as hard, probably harder to the point he was injuring & tearing himself down, I know he tore 1of his biceps training way beyond failure. He gave it everything he had & then some, he just finally came to grips with the literal reality of the fact that the genetics weren't there, & winning that particular title wasn't going to happen. However, he was probably The most popular bodybuilder, as well as probably making more money than the actual Mr Olympia winners at that time because people recognized & loved his positive never say die attitude.
@tigrotom73124 жыл бұрын
@@discernment8963 I know what you mean. I used to buy Muscle and Fitness in early 80's looking up to those guys. I didn't realize they were on steroids lol. Anyway, yeah Tom worked hard as hard as anyone. He did tear his bicep and that cost him. But still I feel if he did NOT train his legs so hard he would have been more balanced.
@discernment89634 жыл бұрын
@@tigrotom7312 Maybe you should start your own KZbin Bodybuilding (maybe everything else to) advice channel. You've got people my age who've seen Platz train in person a few times, & Platz himself stating that he did train his upper body just as hard & even harder than his legs a lot of the time. However, apparently I & lots of others don't know what we're looking at & Tom himself is being less than truthful according to you. Maybe you'll get rich......
