Why drake is hated in brazil 101: - denied to drink the water in brazil saying it was toxic and disgusting. -talked shit about the culture -Did not show up to Lollapalooza a show in brazil, and said that hours before the show - 2019 (last show in brazil) did a BULSSHISH show with no effort, lights off, and demanded to not stream the show on tv. -many other stuff

Rocinha is the largest, but far from the most dangerous. Of all the favelas here, it receives more tourists and foreigners than any other. Second to that is Vidigal, the favela right next to it. Foreigners take tours, both walking and driving, all the time. It's had its moments, especially in the 90s/early 2000s, and shortly after the kingpin, Nem, was captured in 2011, but it's not overly dangerous like others throughout the city. The more dangerous favelas are typically on the north side and west side of the city, far removed from the rich and tourist heavy industry...This is coming from an 🇺🇸 who lived in a favela (CDD) for years...

As an American who visited Rocinha in May 2016 via “tour guide” (local with a jeep) and a few Hispanic & white students from my class (myself & 1 guy were only black people in that small group), I can agree with your comment. While I’m sure it is super dangerous in some areas of it (especially higher up), the fact that we could even step foot in there, walk around, shop, & all make it out unscathed says it can’t possibly be the WORST! & we were up pretty high- lots of very steep stairs after driving up very steep hills. But, being in a favela is DRASTICALLY different form being in mostly anywhere I’ve seen on the main/lower lands. & given the levels of poverty within it, it was like being in another isolated country itself (like a Caribbean island)- which if you’ve been to Caribbean, you know has a similar setup & similar danger levels. Ironically, of all the beautiful places I’ve been in Brazil, I enjoyed this part probably the most because it was the only place in Brazil I visited on that trip where people actually looked like me. Everywhere else, I stood out like a sore thumb 🤷🏽‍♀️. Plus I enjoyed supporting small businesses in there rather than spending my $$ down at the bottom in Rio by the beaches or in other states & cities… Racism is alive & very well in Brazil, unfortunately. 😢 PS- those wiring systems were WILD!! I couldn’t stop looking at them when I was there! Lol

I visited Haiti in the 90s. The poverty was beyond anything I had imagined, but the spirit of the people was so bright, and I never forgot it. They had so much joy amidst the chaos that they lived in. I think of that often and it reminds me that no matter how challenging my life is, it would still be considered a dream life for some people. I've seen people with so much money not have half the spirit of those I saw in poverty. It was a life changing trip that took me years to process fully.

Life in the favela is not easy, but I need to list some points. The first favelas began to emerge after the end of the Brazilian Empire. The coup that established the Brazilian Republic put an end to a financial reparation project that would have benefited former slaves, which explains the emergence of the first favelas. Not every favela resident is black; there are also people who come from the northeastern region and are mixtures of Indigenous and Portuguese descent. In recent decades, things have improved, as you can see in the video, with a functioning commerce that creates jobs and keeps money circulating. Another fact is that not all favela residents are poor; there is no excuse for getting involved in crime. The Brazilian state offers free healthcare, free education, and monthly financial assistance to these people, so there is no excuse to solely blame the government. In truth, the government doesn't care much about what happens there, but it's not true that the government doesn't help... they exaggerate the drama for you foreigners.

I was staying in Rio and had to find an ATM at midnight (long story). The only ATM available was in a Favela, about 30 30-minute ride from Rio. My driver was so nervous that he pulled over on the highway and told me to walk about a hundred yards up to the gas station because he couldn't stop his car while driving in the favela. After passing by a gang that was shocked to see a dude walking up a pitch-black mountain alone, my car came screeching around the corner, and the driver came to a rolling stop, and I jumped in while he was still moving.

I saw some comments asking for the recipe for the drink that appears at 16:20, so here it is: 1 large glass (we usually use a 700ml glass) 1 unit of coconut ice (in Brazil it is sold in several markets and is literally frozen coconut water) From 100 to 400 ml of Whiskey (it will depend on how strong you want your drink) Fill the rest of the glass with Redbull Classic Energy Drink. There are other recipes using other flavored coconut ice and using other flavored energy drinks, but this is the classic one. * We usually use Johnnie Walker Red Label Whiskey, but it can also be substituted.

@@karsonmapes you don't get it. This are two guards of the Favela. There's THOUSANTS like him. They kill people every day on militia wars to take control over the Favelas. Rocinha is the biggest one, but there are hundreds others that are even more violent cuz there's daily conflicts between the militias. These are two guys that killed 10+ people, imagine all killings the the whole organized crimes did... There's no such thing as "what if he was undercover". If he was, it doesn't matter. There's not much he can do cuz if police enter the favela through the front door, it's basically starting war. Militia has military weaponry, anti aircraft weapons, .50 calibber snipers. They're as powered as the major militia in the world. It's literally a parallel power against the Federal, State and Municipally power. Rio is crazy. I'm from São Paulo and thank God I did not live this reality, just know the theory, know a few people that live in favelas too. Rio de Janeiro has two very different realities coexisting.

As an American female, the Rocinha favelas was the ONLY place in Brazil I’ve visited (2016) that I actually felt some sense of safety & comfort around the people (after visiting multiple beautiful places, such as Floripa, Morrettes, Rio Grande Du Sol (Porte Alegre), Paraná (mostly stayed there), a countryside location (a vineyard), & beaches & tourist attractions on the main land of Rio (Ipanema, Copa, Christo De Redempter chapel, Sugarloaf Mtn, etc.). Those heights, narrow super steep staircases, & crazy electrical wire setups were the scariest thing for me. Other than that, I appreciated the local love and hustle!! Even did some samba with a guy hanging out selling jewelry at his tent- good times. 😊 People hailed with beautiful skin complexions that resembled my own & didn’t look at me as if I didn’t belong, unlike in many other places there (was hard-pressed to find a black Brazilian elsewhere, especially a woman- despite their slave trade history🙄). I was more proud of the Rio flip flops and small gifts I bought from the black-owned gift shop in the high hills of Rocinha than anything else I brought at much fancier shops. 🙏🏽 They always hide our people from the tourists of nearly every country; but we’re definitely EVERYWHERE & carry an international bond!! ❤🙏🏽
