To see all those tortured old buildings, the church, the grocery store, the schools, the welcome sign, the many works the public art... At first it is sobering, painful. But as the pictures continued I started to feel more hopeful. The plant life, the river and ponds, even the animal life are gradually reclaiming the area. There's always some hope - the very final picture of the pylons against the sun is a melancholy image but also looks forward. There's always some hope. This was such a wonderful presentation with the perfect choice of music. Thank you so much for sharing.

The funniest detail that original set-up of the game world was Crimea and the unfinished NPP there. Chornobyl came later. I'd say in result there is much common, but a lot of differences. IMHO, the closest are some parts of Pripyat and Jupiter map of CoP, while everything else (especially CS) is very far from real.

As a radio operator I was very familiar with the sound of that Duga transmitter. It was very loud both in the USA and in Israel. When the explosion of the reactor happened I was in military reserve duty, guarding a radar station in Israel. I was keeping from boredom listening to a little transistor radio, which kept being interfered with by the radar. But I heard enough to worry. Chornobyl is not so far from Israel.

We can do a visual comparison. BUT, be ready, that an attempt to recreate an original angle may often result in totally nontransparent bushes. We once in 2015 spent a few days to recreate original shots. Often we were surprised that they were made from (now) completely inaccessible places. As for cleaning at the site... sometimes there are clean ups, but in many cases those trees act as protection for buildings that are not in the best shape anymore.

(О ком звонит колокол?); 4) The bell tools for you (Колокол звонит о тебе) 5) Mi-cro-phone (Ми-кро-фон, exactly like this) 6) Usual Chernobyl (Звичайний Чорнобиль) 7) Archives of Pripyat-Film studio (Unforgettable, Those Places are Dear to Me, etc) 8) Chornobyl: Chronicle of Hard Days (Чорнобиль: Хроніка важких тижнів) by V. Shevchenko. The list is far from complete, of course. As for drama: 1) Moths (Мотыльки) 2) Decay (Распад)

Nejrůznější fakta o Černobylské havárii jsem si začal zjištovat už v roce 2007 po odehrání STALKERa. Very moving. General George S Patton once wrote that "Fortifications are Monuments to the Stupidity of Mankind. If a mountain can be conquered, anything built by man can be conquered.". There is a beautiful book I have called A World Without Us. Basically, its theme is that man is by no means in control and nature will take its own course given a chance. We should live harmony with nature and ourselves if we plan to survive as a species. There should never be another Chernobyl, another Fukishima, another Hiroshima or another Nagasaki.

It’s sad to imagine. Pripyat and the nearby Chernobyl Plant represented the very best that the Soviet Union had to offer. Young people flocked to this model city by the thousands to find work. Old photographs paint a hopeful image. In just a few days in April, 1986. It was all over. Alls that remained were the Soviet Army Liquidators and Nuclear Technicians and then by the early 1990s, most of them were gone. Leaving the once clean model city to slowly decay. The parks and city streets becoming a new forest. The apartment blocs, cracked, wind battered, their old Soviet slogans of hope faded and sun bleached. The most daunting are the Soviet mosaics and modern art which dot the city. Now mostly covered in vines and surrounded by foliage. My favorite of these being the sleek Pripyat sign which once welcomed the new families, technicians, and scientists into the city. Now just a sobering reminder of all the lives destroyed by the a disaster.

"Chernobyl is about eternity," says Alex, and his photographs speak eloquently of humans' attempt to wrangle the power of Nature and prevail, when it is Nature that ultimately and inexorably prevails over all that is Human. Well. Not the last reason why I say this is because to be honest, I am unable to imagine those places alive in a common meaning. Logically I can, but the scale of what is happening there now outbids a scale of an environment suitable for a normal human life. That said, the post-Chernobyl area feels like a tectonic landscape you exist having it in background as something _normal_. With all this, many tasks we deal with at this territory, go for a longer perspective then an average human lifespan. You simply need to think in the scale of centuries sometimes which from the described point is eternity.

So many buildings, objects and places around Chornobyl I had never seen before. Q: given how much time your group have spent teaching the people of Ukraine and the rest of the world about what happened in Chornobyl, what do you think it would take for the one country that doesn't know about any of this (Russia) to learn ? We can't exactly have them visit, they need to learn about past disasters before they can accept the current ones (abandoned Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators and other such problems). Radiation is no one's friend, It's more a devil we trick into doing something useful.
@ChernobylFamily
@ChernobylFamily Жыл бұрын
Well, to MY mind, everything grounds in the social communication. I remember when I was a child here in late USSR/early Ukraine - a narrative of this disaster was always in a scope we need to make conclusions. It was always a big thing. Second, a state policy on information. In Ukraine, we have thousands of documents declassified and we have a free discussion about that. After all, it was a disaster on our land, not somewhere "in another republic". The latter thing perhaps is one of the most important to build a connection and thus make a conclusion. If they would have been similar affected and'd talk about it - things would be probably different.

@ChernobylFamily

I believe you mean the roofs where robotic/manned clean-up has been made? They do, but partially. Zones K, Zh, B, A (all above unit 3) are long closed with a separate part of the Shelter, because they were never cleaned. All the rest are just roofs, not clean, but not that nightmare that was in 1986-88. Zone M is half-covered with Eastern wall of the New Safe Confinement. Turbine hall IV is a subject for early dismantling of unstable structures (check Chernobyl NPP YT channel, seems they have something about this). Please clarify if I misunderstood you.

As a child in Germany, I experienced what happened back then and I keep asking myself whether we were really told the truth about the accident. I always have the feeling that there is something missing in this story, can you tell how much has not been told to the world?
@ChernobylFamily
@ChernobylFamily Жыл бұрын
My opinion is: the problem is wider than just an information one. There was said enough so that general audience is able to understand. What happened back then is so big and so multi-dimensional, that dealing with it it requires a very serious amount of knowledge and a very advanced skill of analysis, because a lot of events have been happening simultaneously, a lot of opinions, testimonies and data exist. I do not mean that average people are not able to reach this; I mean, that even some scientists who are here in the Zone for a very long time, sometimes say me something like "it is that big, that I can be responsible only for my field, and it is still a long road to go". I can say even about myself: all these years I dig into documents, sit in archives and looking, looking, looking, and I still see there is so much to discover in all this field, that I am not sure if that is not a life-long thing to do.

in the HBO show, Legasov says the reactor is still fissioning while it's blown up and on fire, is this true, was the reactor still fissioning after the accident?
@ChernobylFamily
@ChernobylFamily Жыл бұрын
Disclaimer: I am not a nuclear expert, and I always intentionally stood away from going into this field. So what I can say is that there were many opinions about the possibility of this within the first two weeks, given that the conditions of the reactor were unknown; there was a neutron flux, which was sufficient to generate heat, but not a self-sustaining reaction, so likely it was for a very, very short time - basically, residual. Physicists, including Legasov, around the 6th of May, already confirmed there was no chain reaction inside. The active zone's geometry was totally disrupted; thus, there was nothing that could make it on a notable scale.

I worked (I say in the past tense as visits are suspended) with visitors, delegations and sometimes moviemakers (e.g. HBO when they made the mini-series). Additionally to this I work for the state agency for the exclusion zone management. As for the second question, it very much depends what are you going to do and which company do you want to join. Some jobs are connected to the Zone but people actually work in Kyiv or in Slavutych. Major employers are SSE Chornobyl NPP, SSE CPPRW (radwaste management), SSE Ecocenter (radiological monitoring), Chornobyl Biosphere Ecological Reserve (ecology). For example, radwaste management or dosimetry is the thing you can study straight in Kyiv, and then in the Zone in a special centre. For some jobs you need education in physics, biology, etc... but once again, there is no average answer. Please note, that job in the Zone in 95% cases does not grant a full access to the area automatically.

- radiobiology and genetics; - environment ecology; - hydrology; - physics and chemistry of radioactive materials; - engineering (robotics, etc., but those most of time located outside the zone physically); - radiology (spectrometry, dosimetry, radiation hygiene) - these however more are realms of instrumental specialists, not researchers; I'd say the most adventurous from all of this are ecology/biosphere reserve related works, as those include a lot of field work. I totally agree that psychology in the Zone is a VERY important factor, because you deal with danger, however in the conditions of this area it is very easy to get used to it. From my experience, it rather gives me a slight smile. There is a picture of a yard of the "white house" in this video, made from a balcony; so when I came to that very apartment, I opened its door somehow rough. The thing is, the door did not have a lock, but it also did not have a door handle, so... suddenly it closed _firmly_, and there was no way to open it, kind of at all. There was no wind, or at least I did not feel it. I tried to open it for say 15 minutes, and as soon as in my thoughts I started to regret my somewhat rude entry, a powerful wind smashed it open. I stood speechless. In fact, there are certain untold practices of behaviour. When you come to those abandoned homes, think about those, who lived there and be respectful... A few times I had situations that something drew my attention seconds before a brick or a heavy piece of plaster fell from above the wall or a ceiling, straight to the place where I had to be that second. Many, many people of the Zone say: the Zone is a mirror. It reflects your true nature, but in a painful way, it will teach you in an effective way; so be very respectful and try to feel the environment. I heard this a lot of times and I say the same to others.

@@ChernobylFamily Thank you very much for the detailed answer 🙏 Those are intense personal experiences not everyone would share and an especially amazing unexpected conclusion, about the culture of respect and reflection, the people of the zone developed. I would never laugh about any of such stories like you experienced, and treat it with great respect. I also think, even if it's part of it, it's not only a psychological phenomena, but a hyper complex mix of so many things, of which many are still not understood by the scientific world. Having experienced unusual things by myself, i always found 'reasonable' explanations, BUT, looking closer, it appeared as just a tiny aspect of the whole experience. Going as far as calling it a merciful escape rout when the fear of the uncnowen becoms to strong as well as an mear aspect in the complex interelations of reality, when the curiosity to explore the uncnowen takes over again.

I could hardly watch the video recordings of the liquidators. Then I dreamed of the meltdown, it summoned a huge fearsome dragon that reached up to the sky, but the dragon itself, that beginning to stretch around the entire land, was not evil but very wise. After this dream, my fear began to turn into curiosity, and the desire rose, to learn everything there is to learn about it. It was certainly my subconscious that illustrated something for me, but I believe that it is more than that. Your words only reinforce this, as does my desire to experience the zone for myself once this dreadful war is hopefully over soon. Until then I have your channel. Thanks again for your great work!

What damage to the Zone was caused by the Russian _event_ in 2022, and if at all? There is too much contradictory and politically biased information on the web (from "there was nothing" to "a second ecological disaster"), I would like to know first-hand information. !nopolitics

To be honest, as we came to the zone days after its liberation, I can say... very very much damage. Check one of previous videos, there are just a few bits, but... it was really bad. While e.g. Pripyat is almost untouched, at enterprises of the Zone everything was smashed, looted or destroyed.

@@ChernobylFamily What about the ecology? I heard that the event led to a deterioration of the local radiological situation due to incompetence of the parties involved, I would like to know if this is true, and if so, to what extent?

Let's say, if you dig into certain areas of the 10km zone with no protocols followed, this will cause a wind lift with a subsequent distribution of nasty nuclides. Then, there were caused a few pretty massive fires. Then, a lot of landmines have been placed, which certainly affect populations of animals who time to time trigger them (in fact we heard "booms" from Zone's forests quite regularly). Plus, there was a massive disruption of monitoring systems for the first time of the Zone's history. Thanks god, it did not went out of control, but objectively, chances were big.

@@ChernobylFamily Thanks, understood. So, the part of "digging in the zone" was actually the truth, not a hoax. Disgusting to know, tbh...

It is forbidden and impossible to be there for 14 years, you would die. 😄💀 Maybe you mean you went there some times, but all the buildings are destroyed and no one lives there, it is full of radiation and still is to today there is security also.

I mean no offense, but the way how you imagine things is exceptionally naive. Everything is far, far, FAR more complex in this area. There is more than 3000 people managing the operations of the area, and additionally around 2000 more managing operations of the nuclear power plant. All those work by 15/15 or 4/3 days shifts, often for far bigger number of years than us. Google "Chornobyl Special Enterprise", and you will find more. The key is a compliance to radiation safety protocols and rules, which are not easy, but very clear. Not even mentioning self-settlers - check this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/onaqoYyBe8hgi7c
