Remind me of my trip from Shanghai to Tibet in 2010. Couldn’t get a hard bed ticket in summer vacation. Have to sit all the way from Shanghai to Tibet. So torturing. But after seeing all those incredible scenery. Everything is worthy.

Great Video. Very informative. Did the same trip a couple of years ago. Taking the train to Lhasa is better than flying in as it allows the body to adjust to the increasing altitude. Despite spending a couple of days in Xining, I still had throbbing headaches when the train went over one of the high passes.

I did the hard bed sleeper train from Xi'an to Xining, and I thought it would be difficult to sleep, but the rocking of the train lulled me into a deep and satisfying slumber. Probably would do a soft bed in the future, but as a student, it was a good option.

Thanks for the train trip video ! I've thought about taking our Amtrak across the USA .. I did take a loop from Salt Lake city to Vegas, to San Diego, up to LA, then SF, then Seattle and then back to SLC ! Bucket list is to take the Canadian Train (probably a little nicer) from Vancouver, BC (west) to maybe Haliflax (east)... and then fly back to Vancouver :-p

Fantastic video!! You captured the experience. I have taken a bunch of 24 hour sleeper trains in china and absolutely hate sharing compartments with strangers. And it's even worse when there are stops along the way, people coming in and out!!! Sometimes I have ended up sitting all night in the dining car to escape the compartment. So I like that the Tibet train sells seats for those who don't want a compartment. My friends and I are gonna go to Tibet when travel opens up again. Is it absolutely necessary for foreigners to go in a sanctioned group? Or can I go with a few chinese friends? I know we need permits, etc..

I did this trip a couple of years ago with my family but we were only able to get the soft sleeper from Xining to Golmud and then we had to get another train with the hard sleeper from Golmud to Lhasa. We aren't Chinese so the only way we could travel to Tibet was to book a tour with a company.

So finally you are on board sleeper to Tibet. Unfortunately for those without Chinese ID is unable to travel to Tibet in such a free-and-easy manner. They have to follow guided tour and stipulated itinerary. I am hoping to do it on a RV next year but don't know if the authority would allow me. It is politically a very sensitive place so you know what i mean. But for Qinghai, i will take your advise to see the lake at the better side. Take good care and enjoy Tibet {unfortunately without your wife} huh...😃

The trains probably dont come cheap for China Railways since they're specialized to withstand high altitudes and extreme conditions besides China has been spending tons and tons of money towards the high speed network which causes lower train classes to be second rated even for important trains such as the Qinghai Tibet Railway

In Swedish sleeper trains, in first class, you get your own toilet and shower in each cabin. The second class ticket experience is about the same as what you showed in the video. There is also third class with no sheets and six bunks per cabin. No free oxygen though. 😕

They are not the same thing. There is actually no first class tickets in these kinds of train, the only difference between soft and hard bed is the space you can use from my own experience . And the ticket price of the soft bed is still not expensive, cheaper than the second class seats of high speed railway of China.

I paid RMB 1,150 per person for soft sleeper for my train from Xining to Lhasa in this coming August. It's a lot more expensive since we are foreigners, so we must depend on the local travel agent to purchase the tickets for us and of course there is an extra fee, but the extra is a lot more, almost half of the original ticket price 😂 August is a high season period, maybe that also counts as to why the ticket is more pricey. Anywah, I am also taking my mom who is 77 years old. I am very much concerned about the high altitude sickness for my mom, but she has been wanting to visit Tibet for a long time. We would be staying in Xining for 1 night only, hopefully the prescribed medication we have bought to prevent high altitude sickness does its job.

If that is the first class, I can't imagine how crowded the six bed hard bed compartment is like. After reading 'Murder on the Orient Express', I've always wanted to have a long sleeper train ride all across Asia to Europe, but now I think it's gonna be pretty uncomfortable

What was it like sleeping on a train? I've never been on an overnight train trip, but usually I find it pretty easy to sleep on planes - I like the constant hum, and if there is light turbulence, I nod off pretty quickly. Looks like the views out the window were pretty nice along the way. By the way, what was the argument about?

No foreigners are allowed in Xinjiang or Tibet, and it will be that way for quite a long time. Thanks for giving us a tour. The soft sleeper is an upgraded one since the '90s, but not by much! The restaurant car is nice.

The train is a billion times better than America's Amtrak. What I do is use a cup to pour water over your hair to shampoo. Use a face towel to sponge bath and clean the stinky areas.

@@kevindst Amtrak has no beds for anyone less than first class (limited) and the food is no comparison to the Tibet train. The China Tibet train provided beds for all they serve all people. There are no sqaut toilets on Amtrak they have no respect for cultures that use them
