my favorite quote about curt swan is from neal dams: When Denny O'Neil took over the SUPERMAN writing chores, he knew that there would be no problems with the art. O'Neill said, "Swan was the best, a quiet man and not much noticed and consequently underrated because he never caused a fuss; he simply delivered anything an editor asked for, met any challenge and did it with the reliability of the tides."

and here is what curt swan thought of his work: "I get more enjoyment out of seeing a young one's smiling face staring into a comic book that I drew than I could possibly get out of having all of the money, praise and accolades in the world." SUPERMAN could not have said it better.

Wow Cary Bates looks different -- this was probably more than 10 years before I met him. He and I used to have offices near each other (in the same hall) so we'd often sit around and chit-chat about stuff at Universal Studios Florida 1989-1992. He's a really cool guy, but I lost touch with him when he moved to California ca 1992. He gave me a ton of his comics and books before he left, I still have many of them.

Cary Bates wrote most of the Action Comics I'm familiar with (my comics go from the mid-60s to the mid-80s *(I gave up on it when the Infinite Crisis storyline rebooted everything))

God rest Christopher Reeve, Julie Schwartz and Curt Swan, who fortified the foundation of SUPERMAN after Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster built it.

Curt Swan's Superman is a mature man, 35-45. I like his interpretation the best though.

Yeah, even though per "lore" he just little bit over 30 in 80s (revealed in story where Jonathan Kent travels through time temporarily to look at his son as a grown man and all adults past 30 dissappeared except for Kal/Clark and Lois was there too because she was younger than 30) . Action Comics 507-508 if you interested. I like it much more than just very slow aging version like Frank Miller did.

As characterized by critic Paul Gravett, Swan's Superman made ". . . Krypton's last son in exile, the alien in our midst, into someone like us, who would think and feel as well as act, who was approachable, big-hearted, considerate, maybe physically superpowerful yet gentle, noble yet subtly tragic." Critic Arlen Schumer praises Swan's ability to depict "the spectrum of human emotion, from agony to anger, mournful to mirthful."

@chatanwarrior what do you think why they are a pair of names, spiegel was the writer of superman and shuster the artist who created the looks most memorable superhero of them all. and if you think of the times they looked good, just like kanes batman rocked, just look at action comics 1 and you'll know how supes looked, one of the best batman covers of those days was detective comics 31. my fave period is the 60s, so many great artists from kirby over swan to ditko and adams.
