While the collection appears organized now, we don't know the history of how things were stored over the decades. Some of the old photos show boxes of comics stacked everywhere and even jammed in a closet. The "sophisticated" collection rooms and safes you mention appear to be recent additions. The video also indicates the collection was left to his son, not the mother (who was divorced from the father.)

I am amazed how the father was purchasing multiple comic book copies all those years ago. How many people did this back then..? I don't think too many people did this. That was very impressive. Well it’s sad that he resented his dad for collecting. My dad collected coins and I collected comics. Collecting was our common interest my whole life. Even though we collected different things we understood each other’s obsession with grails and collecting. And I don’t think they give this man enough credit. If he bought that Superman already graded he definitely knew it’s importance and scarcity because the CGC keeps a census of all the books graded so he would definitely know what else was out there graded and that his was one of the top.

Every collector should have a will. The will should include a list of all $100. and up items AND who should get them OR what auction house(s) they should go to. Any family member who doesn't appreciate the items gets NOTHING. The list of rarities may help if any of the family members try to pilfer the collection before it is given to the selected source(s) designated in the will. Half of the collectors I know have family members that are as deplorable as this EX-wife in the video.

It’s common, to be judged by non collectors. I am judged everyday especially by those closest to me. And for a long time , I believed something was wrong with me. But my family has everything they need. I have a job, with benefits for my family, and yet I am still judged. I have sold much of my collection for the benefit of my family, but get no thanks for that, Nor do I expect thanks. But still get Judged. No matter what it’s not good enough in the eyes of a non collector family. Plus haters in the collecting community like to judge as well. It’s like we are not meant to fit in. Story of my life. It seems super suspicious that he had a “Mallrats” framed movie poster on the wall and Kevin Smith is a known comic book nut who owns a comic book store. I don’t know what the connection is there but it threw me for a loop and made my spidey sense tingle. Especially given that “Mallrats” is a relatively obscure movie from almost 30 years ago and they just recently discovered this collection. Can’t put my finger on it but something is going on there.

Had a copy of Superman 1. Found it at a yard sale in 1972 for 10 cents! The owner did not understand it was worth something. About 2 years later my dumb sister lent it to a neighbour who moved to Trinidad. Most likely he bought a house with the money! Yes I am still angry at my sister.

the mother and son are terrible people. they didnt give a crap about the dad and his collection when he was alive. soon as he died they found out his collection had some value and now there tune has changed. i couldnt imagine making investments in something to hopefully provide for your family in the future only to be mocked and kicked out of the house.

They had no love or passion for his collection and it drove them all away from him. It would have been nice if he could have shared that with his kids as they grew up. Don't know how you can have this love for cards, comics, and toys and not share it with your kids. Wife was like so many, ashamed her husband collected toys and comics. Now that the stuff is worth millions she is overjoyed. Why I started liquidating my collections few years ago. Any family I have would not care for any of it and would just take whatever they could get for it, better off leaving them some cash if anything.

This “ex-wife” and “son” are horrible people. This news segment is an absolute embarrassment. The mental gymnastics they have to do to somehow make the deceased Father “hoarder” seem insane but also forward-thinking and intelligent is nonsensical. Dad should have left a will where they got absolutely zero of that collection. Looking at the set up he had I'm sure they already benefited greatly from his success as a lawyer. That's not hoarding, that's building a very impressive collection. Hoarding would have been stacks of disorganized books piled up to the ceiling in various states of condition, not bagged and boarded and slabbed. I hate that my meager collection of books in probably the 100K range or so will be sold for probably pennies on the dollar when I pass and not one single person in my life has ever shown the least bit of interest in the thing I've been into for 30+ years. This guy's collection looks like it's in the 10's of millions.

Agree that this is a true collection and not hoarding. I think the entire collection was not graded and his son got the more valuable books slabbed in order to get the most value from auction. There are only two copies of Superman 1 with a CGC blue label graded 7.0 and one sold in 2021 for $2.6Million. I suspect this must be the other copy and it doesn't appear in the sold slabs data because it was recently graded and hasn't been sold yet. I don't know what fee CGC would charge on that valuable a book, but it would be 5 figures for sure. I'm guessing it would be close to $30K just for the grading fee for that Superman 1.

@@toddboyce3599 Having never gotten any books graded, I had no idea you had to pay more depending on the value of the book like that. I thought it was a flat fee under a certain amount and another over that threshold. Interesting. I guess if he's going to get 2.5 mill or so for it, the 30K isn't a concern. Seems like there's an incentive for CGI to give book a higher grade if that means they get a bigger % though.
