Great episode. During the scene in the cab, Pete sarcastically says to Don: "I have everything". Later, in the elevator he emotionally says: "I have nothing". Pete disguises himself through materialism and personal achievement. But the events of the episode slowly reveals his weakness, insecurity, and vulnerability. Pete is ultimately forced to confront his true self and accept the reality that he will never feel truly fullfilled as a man. Don Draper represents the type of man that Pete has always wanted to become. The irony is that both men are pretending to be someone else.

Complete, and utter bullshit. They are acting as is expected of them as men and naturally struggling with this. Don's just older, and more experienced. Pete will get there.

This is probably one of my favorite episodes. I thought of this more as Pete was always just trying to find masculinity that he never had. He had an older brother and he was one of the youngest guys at the office for a long time. Growing up rich and his age weren't really helpful. He is spoiled. He has been pushed and talked down by many people who have fought in wars, been across seas and just grew up in poorer neighborhoods. Pete was just trying to find his place.

Pete is always going to feel like he has nothing because he is always focused on attaining or accumulating more instead of realizing how good he has it. And he's lucky he didn't get his ass kicked sooner.

Pete can dish it out but he really can't take it (which is fair enough, that's just part of his character and it's fascinating). The 'we're supposed to be friends' line is sad but then you remember he was the one who started the beef, betraying the however much wrongly supposed loyalty/friendship that Lane and earlier, Sterling, thought they shared.

I didn't realize how great this episode was the first time I watched. But one of the reasons this is my favorite show of all time, is the rewatchability (not a word). And learning things you didn't notice before.

Pete is a surprisingly interesting character. His arc started an entitled son of a so and so, but he slowly broke away from that to establish a separate identity from his family in a business they didn’t care much for. I see all the flawed characters on this show and know real people like that, especially Pete, Kinsey, Sal, Peggy, Megan, Freddie, and Kenny. Don and Joan seem a little larger than life, and I don’t know any old money people like Roger or Cooper.

Vincent Kartheiser is the worst, slimiest, hammiest, shittiest actor in the history of the world. He looked about 16 in that tartan jacket, I just cannot take him seriously as Pete Campbell... and to cap it all, his hair parting is so far down it should be in Florida
