@@SciManDan Dan Ranty was not some normal none profit flat earth guy. He was profiting high from pushing this narrative for years to all the mentally ill people he says follow that belief. if Ranty come on your channel to be truly open and truthful about being a pusher of the flat earth to profit from it, then that would of been a unique perspective and insight into the dark side about flat earth. Instead he painted himself as a Victim which we all know he was not. He was deep in the middle and profiting highly and in the end he started begging for people to fund him to continue. Obviously that failed and flat earth has less attention now thanks to KZbin algorithms. so conveniently now one photo out of thousands of proofs shown to him converted him back to the globe. @trybunt3 жыл бұрын
Personally, I don't think it's about guts; he was convinced that the earth is flat, then he eventually was convinced otherwise. That's hard to do - genuinely investigate our beliefs, see past our own biases, but I don't think people who are convinced of conspiracy theories are any different than anyone else, they just live a life that results in them becoming convinced of something for bad reasons. There's probably something that we both believe for bad reasons. Maybe it's some weird superstition we hold onto, a wild story we think happened, or some pseudo-science that we fell for. Chances are, we've got a heap of poorly reasoned conclusions in our heads, because we are not very rational, and it's really hard to see our own biases. The best way I know of avoiding as many as possible, is to put concious effort into trying to falsify our beliefs. If a belief can't be falsified, then it's unlikely we are being completely reasonable about it.. Unfortunately, most of us don't like to acknowledge that. It feels icky. So we try and find justifications for the belief, rather then admit we may be unreasonable

I've done something similar in Facebook groups. You can come up with any theory, picture or agument to protect FE and they fall for it lol they don't check if your photoshopped picture is real or not and so on. l If someone did this on a major scale, exposing how they don't care about finding the truth would be huge. You can't debate with them using science, but you could expose their movement to those who actually believe FE is about questioning everything... But that's just a guess. Posting condescending videos just makes them stronger. It helps them with their fantasy of being the protagonists. You gotta expose their philosophy, their way of seeing things; not the FE model.

Something is fundamentally wrong with our society, allowing for an environment of breeding so much mistrust. Thanks Ranty. I'm a former correspondent for the Fortean Times and I have in the past given talks on "paranormal" phenomena. As such I too have often encountered individuals who will buy into each and every conspiracy and/or unproven and unprovable claims presented to them. I will confirm that many of these people have severe mental health issues. Indeed, I happen to know of two whom I happen to know have been diagnosed with severe problems so severe that they have in the past been sectioned, they should be on medication, but they refuse to take their medication, because that's obviously also part of the "great conspiracy". I've observed that such people are drawn to each other, and I can fully understand why. As I have my own mental health issues, I am painfully aware of just how much stigma that carries, and just how isolated you can become. Therefore, like is drawn to like, and they create their own little community in which they share every batshit crazy claim they've been fed. And I therefore applaud you for attempting to expose those who would prey upon such individuals for their own financial gain. Because at the end of the day, they are lining their pockets at the expense of vulnerable people, without a moments care and consideration for the enormous amount of damage they are doing.

What’s sad is I know this story all too well.. back in 2010/2011 I fell down the David Icke rabbit hole because he mixed in a lot of spiritual elements I already found intriguing, and being living in a world where all our leaders ignore climate change and are corrupted by money, that was all the foundation I needed to be open minded towards crazier conspiracies. Thankfully I’m now somewhere in the middle. Not fully believing and trusting our leaders and corporations, but also firmly believing in science and that there’s a fine line between what is possible and what is true. And that a lot of these conspiracies fall far beyond that line.

Thank you for this Ranty, and Dan! As a social species we are usually hit hard by loneliness, and isolation. Often harder than we think! This makes us vulnerable to adopting the views, and teachings of those who accept us, and include us into their "tribe". If the inclusion leads to personal growth, and further inclusion into society as a whole (being exposed to a wide range of information), that is fantastic. However if those who include us promote hatred, and suspicion towards others, we will adopt those traits so as to not lose the favor of our new "tribe". Attacks from outside the group will cement our beliefs, and drive us further into the rabbit hole, which is why sects are so good at holding on to their members. None of us are immune to this kind of manipulation, but luckily most of us are not exposed to people like this when we are at our most vulnerable. It is worth thinking about how many views/values we hold, good, or bad, simply because they are shared by our own "tribe". It's possible that the most effective way to get someone back from the rabbit hole is to offer them inclusion into a new caring community, but the KZbin comment section is probably not the best arena for that. 🙂 Thanks again Ranty, and Dan.

Thank you for doing this! I think this starts to give a better insight into the mindset of someone who is completely consumed by conspiracies. I think it's very easy for people to feel superior to flat earthers and get some kind of validation from that which honestly just increases the barrier to a conspiracy theorist being able to actually bring themselves out of it. The comedic videos about the flat earth communities and "ripping" them apart, whilst funny, ultimately only serve to increase the divide because it reinforces the idea that a person consumed with conspiracies is not going to be accepted just on a person to person basis. Honestly, I feel genuine pity for conspiracy theorists in exactly the same way that I feel pity for a person indoctrinated into some other religion from when they were a child and helpless. We have to honestly think about how we correct that indoctrination, how do we help kids feel part of a rational community, how do we avoid the exclusion, bullying and childhood trauma that ultimately cause people to become so susceptible to this kind of stuff? I think as a scientific community we really and quite seriously need to consider this because until we do, and until we accept that mocking conspiracy susceptible people only serves to continue the memetic trend of conspiracy susceptible people, we are ultimately have some responsibility for the prevalence of these thought patterns in society, whether we like it or not. I guess to summarise my point above and try to give a different perspective, consider this following hypothesis/idea (not sure it's worded well enough to be considered a hypothesis): >> Susceptibility to conspiracy theories, flat earth and other fundamental religious ideologies is a symptom of a different root cause

I've been saying that since day one, in fairness it's not that hard to figure out. You just have to try looking at it from the perspective that we all believe in some form of superstition at some point in our lives and you take that to it's furthest possible conclusion. Having empathy and using their own logic against them often gets no response I've found, but that in itself could mean you have reached them on some level. It also separates the ones who are beyond hope from the casual weekend warriors, as the serious ones will always have a response but never a direct one. Ranty proves that it is possible to make a difference and bring some of them back to reality. It's all about planting that seed of doubt but you need to get into their head first. It won't work if all you do is ridicule and demean them. I also have done this but it's obvious when they are fully beyond any hope of rationality.
